The Conquest of Istanbul 1453

The conquest of Istanbul was a big deal for both Turkish and world histories. The importance of this event in the Turkish history was that the Ottoman Empire had defeated all the obstacles on their way to the Balkans. This very event happened on 29th May 1453.

The Ottoman Empire sieged Istanbul- the city which had a very huge strategical importance- in 1299 but they couldn’t succeed.

Then Sultan Mehmed, who knew the importance of Istanbul very well, came up with a new attack idea.

On 11th April his army had finished the siege and started to fire.

During the siege

Army started to fire

After the fire that lasted 20 days, the army still couldn’t obtain a result. Then, in one night, 70 ships were taken over the land on wooden rails by the people who had been charged for this by the II. Mehmed who thought sieging the city from the sea.

And finally they decided to start a general attack on 29th May.

After a big war that ended most people lives eventually in May 1453 Istanbul was conquered by Fatih Sultan Mehmet.

With the conquest of İstanbul the Middle Age ended and the New Age started.
