Tixi understandsyour PLCTixi Alarm Modems can “talk” withany PLC. The protocols of leadingPLC manufacturers (see box left) arealready installed. This enables Tixi toread and write PLC variables and portsdirectly, without having to load a specialdriver or function block into the PLC. Devicemanufacturers (OEM) with special controllers havetwo simple options. They can either implement the optimizedTixiBus protocol or the standard Modbus in their devices, or Tixi.Comwill install its protocol in the Tixi Alarm Modems.

Have you heard of this?100 devices have to be maintained by three technicians

with different service schedules. This meansthat the destination addresses of the

alarms have to be switchedaccording to the currently

valid service schedule. Thisisn't a problem for the

Tixi Alarm Modem –thanks to theTixi Scheduler.

OEM ModelsTixi Modems have open interfaces in terms of hardware, firmwareand software so that custom adaptations to Tixi Modems are possibleat little expense. The entire functionality of Tixi can thus be madeavailable for any open- loop or closed- loop controller within a shortspace of time. OEMs can integrate their own functions in C/C++,FORTH or TiXML into a Tixi Modem, such as the use of floating pointoperations for calculating the content of a spherical tank from thelevel.

Data Logging for the PLC

Logging of any PLC data (variables, ports) and system data with timeand date stamp in the power fail save Flash memory (2 MB) and additionallyon SD-Card (1 GB). Freelyconfigurable scan cycle and loggeddata volume. Sending of the loggeddata by e - mail or Express E- Mailcyclically or event-triggered as an XML text message, in compressed binaryfile format or as a data record in another format. Different log files witha freely definable size (ring buffer) can be stored.

Telecontrol by SMS + e-mail

A short command via SMS, e -mail or Express E -Mail can switch theoptional outputs of the Tixi Alarm Modem and a connectedPLC or write PLC variables. The execution of the commandcan also be acknowledged. 100 SMS switch commandswith up to 6 parameters each can be defined asrequired. PLC variables can be queried simply andquickly by SMS command without the need for a PC.

Alarming with acknowledgement

Report faults to any recipient via SMS, fax, e -mail or Express E -Mail.Initiate messages triggered by PLC variables, input ports on the Tixi Modemor the Tixi Scheduler. The message texts can contain many actual valuesfrom the PLC and can be of any required length when using fax and e-mail.

Main features:100 addresses in the address book100 predefined messages100 PLC variables can be queried100 definable alarms

Alarm cascading:You can set up freely definable alarm levels(see box) if you wish to acknowledge messages.

Web Server in Tixi ModemThe web server inside the Tixi Alarm Modem allowssystem states and logged data to be visualized andmodified using a browser from any Internet computerin the world.

Web Portalwith machine and data administrationWeb DB (database) is able to manage thousands of remote PLCs or equipmentsover the internet. The data logged by Tixi can be stored, analyzed andvisualized here. Access to data is only allowed to authorized useres. Thesystem can be customized and designed to OEM - customer whishes.

Communication computersTixi Modems are intelligent communication computers with32-bit power CPU, large data memory, future-orientedXML database architecture and Internet technology.

The ability of Tixi Modems to be connected directly tovirtually any large or small PLC heralds a new era of simpleand affordable remote maintenance solutions for industrialapplications. The 2 MB data memory is power fail saveand can be extended up to 1 GB with an SD-Card. Itoffers enough space for your data requirements – todayand tomorrow.

TILA – Tixi Alarm Editor for easy entryHow does Tixi create the address books of up to 100 SMS, e-mailand fax addresses? How are the PLC variables defined with whichTixi is required to communicate? How are the message texts created

and linked with PLC variablesand destination addresses inorder to generate alarms?

Very simply with TILA,the Tixi Alarm Editor.

All entries are stored in aproject file (XML) which is

loaded into the Tixi Alarm Modem via an Internet connection orlocally. These configuration files can be stored on the web portalfor every single Tixi Modem in the machine logbook.

Remote MaintenanceA Tixi Modem can be used to handle the remotemaintenance of several controllers via a telephone lineor via the Internet. This is usually possible with theprogramming software in place. The variables and I/O

ports of the PLC can also be read or written remotely online with the TILATixi Alarm Editor.

The entire configuration of the Tixi Alarm Modem can be carried out byremote dial-in and the logged data can be read manually.

SECURITY is given top priority since unauthorized dial-in attempts areprevented by means of a login procedure with user name and passwordand/or call number identification (all remote dial - ins and dial - in attemptsare logged).

The Tixi Alarm Modem (TAM) can monitor the variables and ports in TAMand in one or several PLCs on the bus.

In the event of a fault being detected, TAM sends an SMS to service technician A.If this person acknowledges receipt within a defined time, TAM resets thealarm.

If TAM doesn't receive the acknowledgment within the defined time, it startsalarm level 2 and sends several messages:An SMS to service technician B, a fax to the service center and an e -mailto the owner of the installation and to the electronic installation archiveon the Internet.

If technician B does not acknowledge receipt within a defined time, TAMinitiates alarm level 3.

No More AT Commands – XML Modems for the Future!

Today's “dumb” modems are still controlled by the same primitive ATcommands that were used 20 years ago! This has been a tremendousobstacle to telecommunication and Internet communication in industrialelectronics.

The Tixi Modem System is based on a powerful 32-bit RISC CPU (ARM7)and the TECom high-level remote communication system, which is configuredusing state -of - the -art XML technology.

The Tixi TECom System was developed completely independently ofany hardware or operating system and can now run on Windows 2000and the MQX RTOS on the ARM7 of the Tixi Modem. Porting to othersystems is easy to implement (e.g. Linux). OEM functions and protocolscan be implemented in C/C++, FORTH or TiXML.

The message definition contains references for the recipient in the addressbook, and to a template in the text database (UserTemplates) for the messagetext. This template in turn contains a reference to particular site information.

This example shows the highly flexible and future-oriented approach thatXML offers for configuring Tixi Alarm Modems. It can also be used for thelater configuration of alarm devices via the Internet (just imagine what thistask would be like using AT commands!).

Tixi system partner:

Telecontrol via e -mail?Impossible, as the runtime of e-mails is completely uncertain if the recipientdoes not have a dedicated Internet line. However, Tixi Alarm Modemscan always be reached via Express E-Mail. Although similar to Internete-mails, their destination address consists of a name and the internationaltelephone number. Communicate with a point - to-point connection directlyvia the telephone network quickly, securely and reliably.
