stewardshipcentrebc.caWhat will we cover today?
v Introduce you to the Green Shores program, including its rationale, benefits, and application
v Share lessons learned from two Green Shores
projects including design, construction and certification process
v Q & A
stewardshipcentrebc.caWhat is Green Shores?
It is a rigorous standard to:
v Preserve or restore shoreline physical processes
v Maintain or enhance habitat function and diversity along the shoreline
v Prevent or reduce pollutants entering the aquatic environment
v Avoid or reduce cumulative impacts

v Guidance Materials created as a tool to develop properties in a “shore friendly” way v Both are built on a format similar to Built
Green™ and LEEDTM using a credit and rating system framework
v Education and Training to expand awareness and use of Green Shores guidance materials

stewardshipcentrebc.caProject objectives
v Restore coastal wetland habitat by restoring tidal influence v Increase the overall ecological function
v Critical for juvenile salmon (Chum and Chinook) and for resting and feeding shorebirds
v Restore Hastings Creek through creation of a stream connection from Creekway Park
v Salt marsh, mud flats, tidal channels, beach grass meadows, shrub thickets (native species)
v Increase public use and education v Installation of park features such as picnic tables, viewing decks, educational
signs v Gravel pathways for controlled access to shore
v Protect the sensitive wetland through installation of strategically located fences and
shrub thickets.

• Goals of this project were to enhance fish and wildlife habitat in Burrard Inlet, and to increase public access to nature.
• Once combined with the Green Shores principles, the project team had a clear path to successful completion
• The GSCD Gold rating reinforces the positive work the
project team and project partners delivered at New Brighton Park, both for the environment and the community.
stewardshipcentrebc.ca
• The urban location of this project proved to be challenging, specifically the robust consultation that was undertaken due to a variety of local resident and stakeholder groups.
• Winter construction work also proved to be a challenge due
to an extremely wet and cold winter experienced in 2016-17, followed by severe summer drought conditions in 2017.
Challenges:
stewardshipcentrebc.ca
• Partnering with the City of Vancouver/Park Board on a project that was very important to many local residents and park users
• Collaborating with the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh
Nations in such a positive, progressive way • Re-opening this area of Burrard Inlet to tidal influence for the first
time since the 1960s. Juvenile salmon have been observed utilizing the wetland since project completion.
• Receiving local and international recognition from Green Shores and
others.
KeySuccesses:
stewardshipcentrebc.caGreen Shores Verifier
Key Success/Challenges of Project: • Huge boost to habitat diversity, quality and quantity = dramatic change
at site • Biggest challenge was remediation of contaminated soils Key Success/Challenge of Verification Process • Documentation was clear and well organized • Project overview captured the project’s key aspects and design
elements
