• The battle began on the night of May 25, 1863.

• Vicksburg lasted 47 days

• The battle ended on July 4,1863

Vicksburg during the Civil war

Casualties

• The Union’s causalities for the battle in siege of Vicksburg, were 4,835

• Confederate casualties consisted of 32,697 during the siege of Vicksburg

Outcome

• Pemberton raised a white flag on the morning of July 3.

• That afternoon Pemberton and Grant met and arranged terms of surrender.

• At 10 am the next day the confederate began to march out of Vicksburg as prisoners of war.

Significance in the Civil war

• The victory in the battle of Vicksburg gave control of the Mississippi River to the Union.

• The Battle of Vicksburg effectively split the Confederate army in two.
