Reforming taxes, cutting spending and protecting taxpayers... since 2004

1

The TaxPayers’ Alliance has declared War on Waste. This pocket-sized factbook is your guide to how much of your money councils, quangos and the Government spend.

You are now armed with facts about how much the public sector spends, where it spends it, how it has grown and where the waste is – as well as international and private sector comparisons. I hope you will consider joining the TPA to help us wage our War on Waste and get Britain out of this economic mess. Jonathan IsabyChief Executive, TaxPayers’ Alliance

Private vs public sector pay

SOURCE: INSTITUTE FOR FISCAL STUDIES

Average hourly wages of public sector workers are 24.3 per cent higher than those in the private sector. Most – but not all – of this difference can be explained by public sector workers typically having greater experience and more education.

After taking into account these differences, average hourly wages are estimated to be 8.3 per cent higher in the public sector than in the private sector.

It is difficult to make comparisons of the two sectors because of the differences in the types of job and characteristics of the employees.

Allowing for these differences as far as possible, in 2011, public sector employees were paid on average between 7.7 per cent and 8.7 per cent more than private sector employees. For consistency over time, these estimates assume employees of those banks reclassified to the public sector in 2008 were in the private sector throughout.
