WEATHER FORECAST

TODAY'S NATIONAL WEATHER FORECAST

Watch the video on “Daily Weather Report”.

Transcribe the text of the video into your exercise book and translate into italian.

• Weather describes the state of

the air, or atmosphere, on our

planet, in a particular time and

place.

Translate the following words:

• Weather is different in different

parts of the world and changes every

minutes, hours, days and weeks.

• It’s constantly changing.

Forecast…………

Watch the video, listen and fill in the gaps with the

words in the box:

• Today is a ………… day in Sicily, Sardinia, in the north of Italy and

along the Tyrrhenian coast.

• It's partly cloudy and stormy, with ………… and temperatures

between fourteen and nineteen ………… Celsius.

• What’s the ………… like today?

• Tonight the ………… will be thirteen degrees Celsius.

• It’s a ………… day with heavy showers and it's very humid.

Let’s play! What’s the

weather like?

• Weather and climate are not the

same things!

• Climate describes the usual weather

of a place over time.

Watch the video, listen and select with a cross the right weather conditions. •What’s the season in Italy at the moment?……………… •The weather in Faiano is not ............ (bad - cold - cool - warm - hot - lovely). Temperature now: ............ Weather situation morning: •The weather in Rome is ............ (bad - cold - cool - warm - hot - lovely). Temperature now: ............ Weather situation afternoon: •The weather in Florence is ............ (bad - cold - cool - warm - hot - lovely). Temperature now: ............ •Weather situation morning:

Let’s look at the

spidergram on weather.

Air is everywhere

• The air is invisible and we forget it,

but air is everywhere!

• Air is a mixture of gases, principally

nitrogen and oxygen, and varying

amounts of water vapor and carbon

dioxide.

• Air occupies its own space, it has

its own weight and it moves with

the wind.

• Air forms the atmosphere that

surrounds the Earth.

Let’s look at the

spidergram on the air!

• Read the text, then complete the sentences:

• Air is made up of gases, principally ………………

and ……………….

• Air also contains water ……………… and

……………… dioxide.

• Air moves with the ……………….

• Air has its own ……………… and ……………….

• The ……………… surrounds the Earth.

TROPOSPHERE

STRATOSPHERE

MESOSPHERE

THERMOSPHERE

EXOSPHERE

Atmosphere

• Earth's atmosphere has five

layers.

• Each layer has a different

temperature, size and height

above sea level.

Let’s play! The

atmosphere.

• Weather occurs in the

troposphere.

• There are many different

factors that can change

atmospheric conditions and

weather in a certain area.

Three factors can change air pressure!

• Air pressure is the weight of

the air molecules on a

surface.

• Barometers measure air

pressure.

Let’s look at the

spidergram on the air pressure!

LET'S USE THE

ACRONYM… H. A. T.

• HUMIDITY

• ALTITUDE

• TEMPERATURE

Air pressure

Let’s look at the

spidergram on

atmospheric phenomena!

WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE?

Changes in air pressure cause changes in the weather!

TEMPERATURE HUMIDITY PRESSURE WEATHER

COLD DRY HIGH GOOD

WARM WET LOW BAD

LOW

HIGH HIGH

LOW HIGH

LOW

Let’s play! Air

pressure.

• The heat of the Sun warms the

Earth’s surface.

• The air gets warm.

• Warm air is light and it rises.

• Air pressure is low.

Why does the wind blow?

• Warm air molecules are

farther apart and less dense.

• The air gets cool.

• Cold air is heavy and sinks.

• Air pressure is high.

• Cold air replaces the warm air

and warm air replaces cold

air.

• The movement of the air

causes wind.

• Cold air molecules are close

together and more dense.

Why does the wind blow?

Wind is caused by changes in air pressure. Wind is a mass of air moving from a high pressure-area to a low-pressure area.

High pressure

Low pressure

WIND

The air will blow from high to low!

Why does the wind blow?

Low pressure causes warm air rising, cooling, and forming clouds.

BAD WEATHER

High pressure causes cold air to sink, warm up, preventing clouds from forming.

GOOD WEATHER

The weather forecast is based on data from atmospheric pressure. Let’s play!

Wind and Air

Pressure.

This is a Doppler map. Black fine lines are isobars. Isobar is a closed line drawn on a weather map that connects points with the same atmospheric pressure.

H = HIGH PRESSURE: A high pressure system is a mass of cool, dry air that generally brings good weather and light winds.

L = LOW PRESSURE: A low pressure system is a mass of warm, moist air that generally brings stormy weather with strong winds.

Let’s play! The

weather maps and isobars.
