The United Irishmen● The Society of United Irishmen in Belfast in
October 1791.● They were inspired by the French and
American Revolutions.● They wanted a reform of the Irish parliament; ● They wanted to achieve this goal by uniting
Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter in Ireland into a single movement.
The United Irishmen
● The society was suppressed in 1794 after the British discovered the United Irishmen were in negotiations with the French.
● After this, the United Irishmen became a secret society.
● They formed a plan in 1796 to land 14,000 French troops in Ireland, but a storm blew the ships off course.
Theobald Wolfe Tone● Born in Dublin in 1763 to a wealthy Protestant
family.● Studied law in Trinity College.● Wrote ‘An Argument on Behalf of the Catholics
of Ireland‘ demanding that Catholics be admitted to parliament.
● Helped found the United Irishmen in 1794.● Helped to organise the 1798 Rebellion.● Sentenced to death after the Rebellion failed.
James Napper Tandy
● Tandy was born in 1740 to a Protestant family in Dublin.
● Helped found the United Irishmen in 1794.
● Tried to get the support of the French to help in the Rebellion.
● Sentenced to death after the Rebellion failed, but was instead exiled to France.
Lord Fitzgerald
● Born to a Protestant Ascendency family.
● Officer in the British Army and fought in the American Revolution.
● Joined the United Irishmen in 1796.
● Killed while resisting arrest after the Rebellion failed.
General Lake
● General Gerard Lake was the leader of the British forces in Ireland.
● He used brutal tactics to repress the United Irishmen in Ulster.
French Leaders in the Rebellion
● General Lazare Hoche led the French fleet to Ireland but was blown off course from Bantry Bay due to a storm.
● General Humbert led the French forces in Ireland.
