HereintheUnitedStates,anothersummeriswindingdown.AndfortheMaloneyfamily,everysummerendswithareturntomyhometownofRidgway,Illinois,fortheannualPopcornDayfestival,whereIamhonoredtoserveasthe“PopcornKing,”themasterofceremoniesfortheday'sevents.

Regardlessoftheseason,everyfamilyhasitsowntraditions.Iwouldliketosuggestanewoneforyours:FindanopportunitytointroduceyourfamilytoRotary.Oneofmyfamily'straditionsistotakeourdaughtersandgrandsonstotheRotaryInternationalConvention.The2020conventioninHonoluluwillbeawonderfulwaytointroduceyourchildrenandgrandchildrentotheinternationalityofRotary.Weareplanningmanyfamily‐orientedeventsforeveryonetoenjoy.

AnytimeisafabuloustimetobringfamilymembersonaRotaryserviceprojectortoafundraisingevent.Butperhapsyouhavenotseenmanyfamily‐friendlyeventsatyourclub.ThatispreciselywhyoneofmytopprioritiesthisyearistomakemostRotaryeventswelcomingtofamilymembers.

WemustfosteraculturewhereRotarydoesnotcompetewithfamily,butcomplementsit.Weshouldneverexpectourmemberstochoosebetweenthetwo.Thatmeansbeingrealisticinourexpectations,considerateinourscheduling,andwelcomingofchildrenatRotaryeventsoneverylevel.

Often,theyoungprofessionalsthatRotaryneedstoattractinordertoremainadynamic21st‐centuryserviceorganizationaretheverypeoplewhohavethegreatestfamilyresponsibilities.Wemustnotkeeptheseprospective

youngmembersawayfromtheirfamiliesbyholdingeventsoneveningsandweekendsatwhichtheirchildrenarenotwelcome.

Fortoolong,wehaveclosedthedoorsofmanyRotaryeventstochildrenandsometimesevenspouses.Whatwastedopportunitiestheseare!EverychancewehavetopassonthegiftofRotarytoyoungpeopleisonewemusttakeifwearegoingtogrowRotaryandensurethatthenextGenerationisfullyengagedinourmission.Soletusopenourdoorsanddoitinafunway,withopportunitiesthatmakeourchildrenandgrandchildrenwanttolearnmoreaboutInteract,Rotaract,andRotarymembership.Startsmallifyoumustperhapsbyholdingsomeofyourmeetingsatmorefamily‐friendlytimesbutthinkabouthowyoucancontinuethesekindsofeventsforyearstocome.

BringingchildrentoRotaryeventsisnotjustfun;italsoexposesthemtotheworld!Makethisamemorableyearforyourfamilyandanunforgettableyearfortheever‐expandingfamilyofRotaryasRotaryConnectstheWorld.

helookedupandsaid,“Grandma,howcomeyoudon'thaveaboyfriendnowthatGrandpawenttoheaven?”Grandmareplied,“Honey,myTVismyboyfriend.Icansitinmybedroomandwatchitalldaylong.Thereligiousprogramsmakemefeelgoodandthecomediesmakemelaugh.I'mhappywithmyTVasmyboyfriend.”

GrandmalaterturnedontheTV,andthereceptionwasterrible.Shestartedadjustingtheknobs,tryingtogetthepictureinfocus.Frustrated,shestartedhittingthebacksideoftheTVhopingtofixtheproblem.

Thelittleboyheardthedoorbellring,sohehurriedtoopenthedoorandtherestoodGrandma'sminister.Theministersaid,“Helloson,isyourgrandmahome?”Thelittleboyreplied,“Yeah,she'sinthebedroombangingherboyfriend.”
