Fortescue Metals Groups has recently implemented its latest innovation - Australia's first heavy-haul railway TETRA digital radio network. The project was part of Fortescue's US$9.2 billion T155 infrastructure expansion project which expanded its production infrastructure capacity to deliver 155 million tonnes of iron ore per annum for shipping to its growing markets in China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan. The Tetra Radio System's unique design covers more than 2500 square kilometres of Western Australia's Pilbara region and has more than 40 nodes and 5700 mobile and handheld terminals. These have been placed across Fortescue's 620-kilometre railway network from its four mines in the Chichester and Solomon Hubs to Herb Elliott Port at Port Hedland. Fortescue's rail network is the fastest and heaviest haul line in the world with a 40-tonne axle load capacity. The radio network covers all vehicles, rail and road, handhelds and desktop radios.
