Organizations start the path to cloud, but with multiple approaches you can easily go down the wrong path. The keys to cloud success are understanding how it changes process, people and technology. In these slides, which CA Technologies VP of Product Marketing Andi Mann presented at Gartner ITxpo, take you through a self assessment to determine where you are today and the right next steps for the future.

assess your cloud maturity – how to play

Before you play – check the NIST cloud overview.you must be at least this mature to ride the cloud!

Convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing

resources … that can be rapidly provisioned & released with

minimal management effort or service provider interaction

No points yet – this is the baseline!

NIST criteria 1: broad network access

Capabilities are available over the network and accessed

through standard mechanisms that promote use by

heterogeneous thin or thick client platforms (e.g., mobile phones, laptops, and PDAs).

NIST criteria 2: on-demand self-service

A consumer can unilaterally provision computing

capabilities, such as server time and network storage, as needed automatically without requiring

human interaction with each service’s provider.

NIST criteria 3: resource pooling

Computing resources are pooled using multi-tenancy, with physical

& virtual resources assigned & reassigned on demand. There is a sense of location independence; the customer has no control or

knowledge over the exact location of the provided resources

NIST criteria 4: rapid elasticity

Capabilities can be rapidly & elastically provisioned, in some cases automatically, to quickly

scale out and rapidly released to quickly scale in. To consumers,

capabilities appear to be unlimited & can be purchased in

any qty., at any time

NIST criteria 5: measured service

Cloud systems automatically control & optimize resources by leveraging metering with some abstraction appropriate to the

service. Usage can be monitored, controlled, &

reported providing transparency for provider & consumer

so how did you score?

— Less than 25− You have a long way to go before you deliver cloud – but you are here, so you

have at least taken the first steps.

— 26-50− You are still some way off delivering a ‘real’ cloud, but you have established a

foundation which is probably already delivering some results.

— 50-75− You have achieved more than most, and should be proud – but don’t rest on your

laurels, you still have work to do.

— Over 75− You are probably already using external cloud services, and/or delivering most or

all of a private cloud. You should help other CIOs around you!
