Facts and People That Link Italy to the Other Continents

Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was a Genoese navigator, colonizer and explorer, who crossed the Atlantic Ocean and discovered AMERICA!!The name of his ships were : Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria.The anniversary of Columbus's 1492 landing in the Americas is celebrated in the USA as Columbus Day on the second Monday in October.

AMERIGO VESPUCCI (1454-1512)

Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian explorer and cartographer. The continent of America is popularly understood to derive its name from the Latin version of his first name.

VOYAGESVespucci played a senior role in two voyages which explored the east coast of South America. On the first of these voyages he discovered that South America extended much further. Vespucci's voyages became widely known in Europe.

This is the Italian training ship Amerigo Vespucci.

The Polos spent 17 years in China. The book was translated into many European languages and is known in English as The travels of Marco Polo. The original is lost and there are now several versions of the translations. Several ships of the Italian navy were named Marco Polo.

Marco Polo was a trader and explorer from the Venetian Republic who gained fame for his worldwide travels, recorded in the book Il Milione. Polo, together with his father Niccolò and his uncle Maffeo, was one of the first Westerners to travel the Silk road to China.

Umberto Nobile(1885 – 1978)

He was an Italian airship designer and pilot who took part in two flights over the

North Pole, one in 1926 in the airship Norge and another in 1928 in the airship

Italia.The Norge, meaning Norway, flight took

place on May 11-14, 1926, and was a joint Norwegian-American-Italian venture. This was the first undisputed attainment of the North Pole by air and the first crossing of

the polar sea from Europe to North America.

Giuseppe Garibaldi

Garibaldi was born on July 4, 1807 in the town of Nice. Garibaldi in Brazil took up the cause of independence of the Republic of Rio Grande do Sul in Brasil, joining the gaucho rebels known as the farrapos (tatters) against the newly independent Brazilian nation. During this war he met a woman, Ana Ribeiro da Silvaa (best known as "Anita") and married her.

Garibaldi took command of the Uruguayan fleet and raised an "Italian Legion" for the Uruguayan Civil War, aligned with the liberal coalition (with support of France and United Kingdom) against the conservative forces of former president Manuel Oribe's Blancos and Argentine Federales. Here he fought in the civil war for the liberty of the people.

Italian immigration in Brazil was important from 1870 to 1920. The greatest part concentrated in the State de São Paulo where there were coffee plantations.The Italians started to emigrate because they were pushed by the socio-economic situation in the Italian penisula. 1.243.633 Italians emigrated to Brazil.

Ellis Island, at the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor, was the main entry for immigrants coming to United States.It is now part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.Immigrants from all over the world went through Ellis Island.All had to leave their countries; over 40% of the American population can trace their ancestors to Ellis Island.

ITALIAN IMMIGRATION IN AUSTRALIA

• Australia needed Italian immigrants due to the lack of labor, particulary in the agricultural industry.

• The Australians came to respect the Italian migrants as they were hard workers and could cope with working in Australia’s hot climate. They also came to realise the positive effect their arrival in Australia was doing for their economy.

• Italian migrants played a big part in the growth of Australia. They provided them with sorely need labor in the post war period and gained a new respect from the Australian public. This resulted in many migrants being naturalised, and continuing to build a future in Australia.

ITALIAN SHIPSITALIAN SHIPS

• A lot of ships were used to carry people from Europe to the other continents. Millions of people in search of a new life sold all their possessions to afford a transoceanic voyage. They hoped to become rich and come back to Italy.

The small Italian fleets after 1870 were helped by the government and some of them became big.Between 1880 and 1920 more than 4 millions of Italians came to the USA and changed the country: their legacy can be seen everywhere.Today more than 10% of the Americans explain have Italian origin.From 1900 to 1932 beautiful ships like Re Vittorio, Giulio Cesare, Augustus were built.

AMREF is a association who

assists victims and decided to help the Kenya Police with a

helicopter that could accommodate six injured people.A

medical team of doctors and nurses together with the

support equipment

and all the necessary supplies was prepared for the flight. The teams made difficult decisions to choose the patients with various injures who should be moved on to Kenyatta National Hospital because the helicopter could only accommodate the sickest 7 patients. Together they provided a vital life line to ensure that at least some of the victims received the best possible treatment enabling them to begin the long road to recovery.

Antonio Meucci• Antonio Meucci was born in 1808 and studied mechanical engineering

and design. • He made the discovery that sounds could travel through copper wire. • Some years later, he made a communication system and, in 1860, he

conducted a public demonstration of a system which he called 'teletrofono'

• He sent a model and technical specifications to the Western Union telegraph company, but could not manage to get an appointment to meet the senior executives of the company.

• In 1889, Meucci died. However in 2002, 113 years after Meucci's death, the American Congress recognised officially that it was Meucci who invented the telephone.

Luciano Pavarotti He is one of the most famous

Italian artists in the field of opera. He was an Italian tenor. Pavarotti was also noted for his charity work benefiting refugees. He began his professional career in 1961 in Italy. The late 1970s and 1980s saw Pavarotti continue to make significant appearances in the world's opera houses. He made numerous recordings of complete operas and individual arias. On 6 September 2007, he died in Modena aged 71.

CARNIVAL DAY

CARNIVAL DAY IN ITALY ..Carnival day in Italy has very

ancient origins. There are: joy, dancing, entertainment, food and sweets. Regions in Italy celebrate it with parades and dancing in the square, traditional masks and fantastic costumes to draw tourists and visitors from around the world.In Venice Carnival is the most famous in our country but another one is organized in Viareggio in Tuscany.

from Old French Hellequin, devil funny, multicolored dress, black mask on face, white hat, leather bag attached to the belt and a wooden spatula.

The only female among the many male characters is Colombina or Smeraldina, lively and crafty servant, charming Venetian liar.

500 masks are vey famous like that of Pulcinella, Arlecchino and Colombina.

.. Carnival in the world .. During the carnival people disguise themselves and put on

crazy masks: in France they also make a man out of straw. They take all his clothes off, attach him onto a post, and push him throughout the roads of Paris. At night he is “killed” in front of everybody. There are many ways they kill him – drown him, burn him or even hang him.

In some Brazilian cities the celebration can last seven or eight days. Rio de Janeiro is the mother of all carnival celebrations around the world. More than twelve “escola de sambas”, or samba schools, compete in categories of costumes, dance and percussion.
