Welcome to the latest edition of the Tenby Schools, Penang newsletter.
SiWu Scholar
I have great pleasure in advising the Tenby Penang community that Shaun Kuo Chien Yeoh has been awarded a
SiWu Scholarship for 2016 - 2017 for Forms 4 and 5. Like our other current SiWu Scholars, Shaun has
demonstrated not only a strong academic talent, but also a willingness to contribute consistently to the life of the
school in a variety of ways.
At all times Shaun can be depended upon to take a leading role in events and activities outside the classroom and
his positive approach to school, and to life in general, make him a wonderful role model for his fellow students.
The interview panel was most impressed with Shaun‘s presentation, confidence, maturity, ambitions and by his
willingness to achieve his very best in all that he undertakes.
The 2016 SiWu Scholar, Shaun Kuo Chien Yeoh with the Campus
Principal, Mr Gregory Mowday; Head of STSS, Mdm Thum; his
Mother, Didalync Choo Li Ling; and Head of Sri Tenby Penang, Mr
Cheah
On behalf of Tenby Schools, Penang I congratulate Shaun on his
achievement and I am sure that he will continue to make us all
proud during his remaining years at Tenby and in the future.
Tenby Visit by Queen’s University Belfast and Stranmillis University College Belfast
Last week saw a visit to Tenby Schools Penang by Dr Sharon Jones representing Queen‘s University Belfast and
Stranmillis University College Belfast for the purpose of observing five of our teachers who are currently enrolled in
the PGCEi programme through that College.
Dr Jones with (left) Lim Hooi Thean
and Teoh Sin Yee from Tenby
National School; and with (right)
Tanya Jackson, Yeoh Yee Ling and
Darshan Kaur from Tenby
International School.
While understandably nervous at having to demonstrate their skills in front of Dr Jones, all of our teachers did a
fantastic job and Dr Jones‖ feedback to me and to the Heads of Schools was that we are very fortunate to have such
talented teachers working with our students. I am sure that the five teachers involved in the class observations will
provide an inspiration for more of our teachers to undertake the PGCEi to further their skills and understanding.

First of all, we would like to thank the school for giving TSPA (Tenby Schools Parents‘ Association) this opportunity
to contribute in the school‘s Newsletter. While it is the first time we are doing this, we are hoping that through the
Newsletter, all parents can be kept informed about the aims, activities and matters of TSPA.
This year - 2015/2016 academic year - one of our biggest undertaking has been to get our association formally
registered with the Registrar of Societies. TSPA has been in existence for the last few years and is run by a group of
parent volunteers who are independent from the school. All parents of students at Tenby schools automatically
become members of TSPA when the child joins the school, so as the student population grows at Tenby; we have
more parents in our network. Hence a more formalized group structure to support the growing needs and concerns
of the parents at Tenby.
On 26th May, TSPA will be holding its AGM (Annual General Meeting) to elect its new committee members for the
2016/2017 academic year. We will be sending our Notice of AGM together with a copy of our Constitution
electronically via school portal for your perusal soon. We urge you to come to the AGM so that you can be kept
abreast of the year‘s work at TSPA, meet other parents and help us elect your representative.
In addition to the administrative work done behind the scenes, we have also initiated a few new projects to be carried
out this year. First of all, TSPA is planning a Teachers‘ Day Celebration on 16th May to recognize and show our
appreciation to all the teachers at Tenby.
And continuing on the success of the Summer Fair held last year, we are planning to hold the 2nd Summer Fair in
July. This time, in addition to raising funds to support TSPA‘s operations and projects, TSPA will be helping the
students to raise funds for the Year 11 graduation farewell dinner. This has been a tradition in Tenby.
And finally, we would like to invite ALL parents to join the various TSPA working groups to look into projects which
TSPA can sponsor for the benefits of our children.
Do drop us an email at tspa.penang@gmail.com if you would like to help enhancing your child's school experience.
We really look forward to having more parents‘ active participation in TSPA because we believe in our motto:-
GET INVOLVED!
Supportive Parents, Inspired Children!
Best regards,
Lim Siew Yean

UNESCO World Book Day
The 3rd
of March 2016 is UNESCO World Book Day. In conjunction with this day we are encouraging every student
to read a book this week and prepare a synopsis of the book which has to be handed to the class teacher or
language teacher. The book synopsis can be in English or Bahasa Malaysia. Synopsis that are creatively written
will have an opportunity to win a prize.
Books are very powerful, they can transform lives. Almost all successful people will attest that there is at least one
book that they have read that has completely turned around and transformed their life. Books can be mentors,
teachers and inspirations.
Books are storehouses of knowledge, skills and information. Books feed our hungry brain with information and
knowledge that make our brain function more effectively. Information and knowledge can mean power, but it can
also lead to inspiration and success.
Books can take you out of your world and away from your personal paradigm for a while as they let you into the
private mind of the writers or authors.
Books can also bring you tremendous enjoyment and laughter which is good for your well-being, while the mystery
novels will stimulate and excite your imagination.
I do hope that our students will be encouraged and will be interested to read more as reading has many
advantages. To quote Mark Twain "The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read".
Book Swap Day and Dress up Day
On 9th March 2016 Wednesday, students are allowed to wear costumes of their favourite book character to school.
There will be books swapping for students who are interested to exchange book or books with their friends on that
day.
Visit from Dr Sharon supervising lecturer from Stranmillis University College, United Kingdom
We would like to thank Dr Sharon, from Stranmillis University College, United Kingdom and Mrs Lai from our Tenby
Corporate Office for their visit to Tenby Schools, Penang.
Their visit forms part of the teacher training program run by the school. To ensure that our teachers are up-to-date
in their skills and knowledge, professional development are conducted both internally and externally by other
professional/academic institutions for the teachers.
Two of our teachers who are enrolled in the PGCEI course were observed by Dr Sharon. Before she left, she had a
lengthy and informative discussion with me about her observations. Dr Sharon was impressed with the pedagogies
employed by the teachers and the learning that was happening in the classroom. She was satisfied with the level
and standard of mentoring and support provided for teachers of the school. I am very proud to quote Dr Sharon
―Your Teachers are fantastic.‖ Thanks teachers for the wonderful job you are all doing and may we continue to
strive to be better.

Choral Speaking Assembly
This week, during assembly, the students of Tahun 5 demonstrated their skills in
cooperative performance through choral speaking. Their effort in the vibrant and
entertaining narrative of ―Little Red Riding Hood‖ in the form of a poem must be
commended. Well done students and we hope to see more choral speaking items in
future.
Art lesson Tahun 4 In the KSSR Visual Arts (PSV) curriculum, students practise creativity by producing
works of visual arts in four areas namely drawings, patterns and designs, forms and
constructions, as well as traditional crafts. Incorporated into the content of these four
areas are four basic aspect: aesthetic perception, art expression, creativity, and art
appreciation.
During Visual Arts lessons students are guided to carry out activities designed to
achieve the objectives of the curriculum
7
Bahasa Malaysia
In Bahasa Malaysia lesson in Tahun 2, students were taught about the importance of nutrition and the food
pyramid. The students worked in groups to construct a food pyramid and then present their work orally in class.
Such form of cross curricular teaching encourages application of knowledge and values in more than one
discipline. It supports and add relevance to the learning process .In addition studies have shown that it develops
and enhances problem solving skills in the students.

From The Head of STSS
I am happy to share some exciting news and upcoming events in March.
All STSS students are putting in a lot of hard work for the important first assessment test, from 1st to 5
th March. Stu-
dents are aware that the assessment is the test to gauge if they have acquired knowledge, understanding and skills
to achieve their learning targets for all the subjects.
We welcome all parents to collect the school assessment results during Parent-Teacher Meeting on 13 April from 5
to 7p.m.
There were very positive student feedback from the previous Parent-Teacher Meetings. Many felt more encouraged
to do their best when their parents showed up to discuss academic and behavioural matters with teachers. Parents
can be on the same team with teachers to enhance learning and help take achievement to the next level.
Open Day, 11 and 12 March
Parents and prospective students can gain an insight into education in Sri Tenby Secondary School. We invite you to
observe exciting teaching and learning in classrooms
You can also get information on the Malaysian national school curriculum, facilities and be taken on a tour of the
campus. Staff will be at hand on 11th March to answer any queries you may have.
I am sure you will join me in congratulating Shaun Yeoh for winning the SiWu Scholarship.
There was an interview of the two shortlisted candidates. They were smart, intelligent students with outstanding
academic performance and are actively involved in school co-curricular activities. Each spoke on why they should be
awarded the scholarship. They were confident, eloquent speakers with engaging personalities.
Both are winners in their own right, given their impressive presentations but only one scholarship can be awarded
and Shaun is the winner.

My Thoughts on winning the SiWu Scholarsip
People have really made me feel like a celebrity in the past few days.
"Congratulations on getting your SiWu scholarship. What was the interview like? What do you plan on doing in the
future?
How does it feel to have received the scholarship?" I am extremely grateful to be awarded this scholarship. The
scholarship gives a little more financial freedom to my family's tight budget.
However, I have my fear after the euphoria.
With the scholarship comes expectations and responsibilities. The school board
expects a high level of academic performance and active involvement in school
activities. To me, that sounds like what my parents demanded of me too, prior to
receiving the scholarship, but now, reflecting on all the effort, the wonderful
teachers and heads have contributed to help me win this scholarship, I believe I
need to work twice as hard to fulfill the expectations. Don't get me wrong, these
expectations are not totally beyond my reach. They are realistic, but now I feel a
push, a nudge, with a message saying, "Shaun, this is serious now, you are on
scholarship! Do badly and you are going to disappoint everyone who helped to get
you here!"
In the lower forms, as long as I achieved my targets in school my parents and
teachers left me alone. My parents were satisfied that I was doing fine in school and so was I. I was into interests,
hobbies, having fun in life, doing what I enjoyed. Well, simply put, living the life of a good teenager. (It was then
that I discovered my passion for music)
However, with an increasingly challenging work load in school and the realisation of the responsibility that comes
with a scholarship, I need to really work hard-very hard!
When I received news that I was given the scholarship. I could not stop smiling the whole day. My friends and
teachers congratulated me.
However, I realised how great the responsibility is to live up to expectations when I signed an agreement to accept
the scholarship. There are targets to be met and expectations to fulfil. It suddenly dawned upon me how ‗big‘ this
was and how much it meant to the teachers, heads and family that I had won the scholarship.
A million things ran through my head, "Do I deserve it? Have I put in enough effort to merit the offer?"
But then I shook myself out of the doubts. "They picked me, they see potential in me.
There is a reason they did so, and I am going to do my absolute best not to let anyone down and above all I must
not let myself down.
The scholarship has spurred me on to work even harder. I am focusing in class and doing homework. Its not that I
was not doing all that, but I am now more energised and determined since I won the scholarship. I do enjoy school.
I have not turned into a complete nerd. That would not be Shaun Yeoh! I still play football, attend French classes,
let my hair down playing music, help out in church, and do a whole lot of fun activities. I enjoy school and school
has become even more fun when I have been awarded the SiWu Scholarship. For that, I am grateful.

From the Head of TISS
Dear Parents,
During the last week I have managed to spend a lot of time in classrooms. This has been wonderful to see our
students in lessons, the progress they are making and strong relationships they have with their teachers. As we
improve as a school it is important to focus on how our students learn. Following this, I thank all parents who
attended the session this term on active learning, this really helps parents to get involved with how their children
learn. As a school we will continue to support this and offer opportunities to parents who want to get more involved
to come in and see the strategies we use in class.
Following parental feedback from the previous two parents evenings, we have changed the format. I had a lot of
feedback about the following:
Starting earlier
Splitting up the Key Stages
Not being able to make an appointment as it was too busy
I am keen to try and address these issues and have spoken to parents and staff over the past few months and
have changed the parents evenings. They will start at 4.30pm and finish at 6.30pm, the Key Stage will be split to
reduce the amount of people attending in the same evening. We will review these changes after the next parent
evening.

MSSPP Table Tennis and Swimming
Fingers poise, eyes taciturn and our bodies pumping with zest and switched to full
aggression mode; our ferocious stance was the hallmark of our victory in this year‘s
MSSPP table tennis competition from the 18-19 February. Tenby International School
whose wholehearted competitive nature is of no equal and has always been the
perpetual pride of Tenby has been selected to be part of the annual MSSPP
competition. Our skills and talent exhibited on that day has been the highlights of that
thrilling event… an event that shall not be forgotten. I am honored to be part of this
small company of Tenby‘s finest table tennis players. However, we were able to find
solace in our very few defeats by consolidating ourselves with the fact that we
managed to strive our way to a bronze doubles and silver team event with our
vehement smashes, fierce delivery and flawless drop shots.
It was the 18th February; we caught up with the school van bound for the MSSSP
touring site to commence with the team event. At the brink of the competition, there
were already high hopes and strong premonitions of ambitious victory lurking from
our unparalleled optimism. As we arrived, there were a huge crowd of spectators and
players orchestrated in a scattered manner as though they were there to
commemorate our victory. There were a total of 4 schools participating in our zone.
There was a sense of a multi-sporting awareness as we witness an assembly of
vibrantly dressed players where each of their respective color represent the summit
of their school‘s pride and at the same time posing a high level of conceptual and
mental ethical standards.

First up, was the team event, we were up against the hosting school which was ‗Portay‘.The team event consist of a total of 4 schools where each school submits 3 of its best players to thwart the opposing school. Each victory signals a point for that winning school. A slight hint of incompetence blanketed me as I was the first among 3 players sent up and also base on the fact that we knew neither their strength nor their weaknesses. An immense burden rest upon our shoulders as this was the first games of the day. Our anxious face became the outlined of the impending game that seem to meddle with my eager anticipation more and more as time passes. The game begun after a couple of strokes in which I deliberately devised to assess my opponent‘s ferocity and his degree of versatility to perform precarious smashes. To my surprise, he wasn‘t much of a worthy opponent to rally with. It ended an ‗easy victory‘ in which my opponent succumbed to 3 straight matches 11-4, 11-5 and 11-5 and likewise for both of my other sweaty companions, Ananth Archarya and Seng Xun. Nevertheless, the first match was the driving factor of our esteem to deliver a long streak of victory against other schools like the West Landers and Tanjung Bungah. However, to our dismay, our victory soon became steeper. We were up against the San Xaviers whose fierce glaring stare had seemed to bolster our fear. Our sweat was the sign of our unfounded strength and perseverance that would only pay off if we were able to put an end to the physically straining threshold that both schools are plunged into. The spectators bellowed endlessly at every perfect demonstration of skills from backhand smashes to overly rounded retaliation of smashes hoping that one or another would finally succumb to fatigue. The scores ended in several deuces which left the audience with bated breath and raised the stakes higher. We were thwarted by the superior forearm of our opponent who dictates each rally with enthusiasm and fearsome rejuvenating skills. It was still a wonderful performance by Bryan, Jasdyl and Ananth. The following day was the doubles event. Each of us paired up and was signed up by Ms. Nurul who was our outstanding, bestowed coach for the next event. All of us got changed into our well groomed authentic uniforms. To cap it all, the doubles started with the first pair from Tenby (Ananth & Seng Xun) against the Logan ad Aninav from San Xaviers. At first, they were making great proficiency; we were close to triumph in the double event. However, our opponent was able to step up their performance and counter our serves with minimum effort. It was as though they weren‘t trying at the start. Each leaping point our opponent took was like a tumor cascading into the recesses of our soul. Our defeat soon became a travesty of pride. Next up was the second doubles pair from Tenby (Jasdyl and I). We were able to outdo ourselves easily as we got off with a tremendous start of points on our side. We took turns turning the game of rallies and strokes to a showdown of skills by utilizing the opponents‘ inability to counter curve balls to our advantage. We made no rooms for error and consecutively took turns to smash our opponent mercilessly. The game ended with us being victorious, 11-5, 11-7 and 11-5. Now, to secure our place in the semi-finals we had to toughen up our valiant spirit. The second match began with us winning the first and second set. Nevertheless, it was just then did we realize we were facing an opponent whose determination to win is as intrepid as it seems. Our efforts to monopolize the first 2 sets were successful and yet without the third set our efforts will end in futility. We fought hard but somehow our opponent came back with instantaneous top spins and cuts and smashes no matter how hard or intense the curves of the ball were. The scores were close, the mesmerize audience emitted a sense of stern silence which filled the hall with inward chants of victory. Ragged muscles, breathing spasms, and my frowns of pain seem to reach its ultimate threshold… we were defeated once more. Lastly, we had made great progress compared to last year‘s MSSPP as we sweep our way to the sweet clanging sound of medals. So much for table tennis, it was a great experience which I would not forsake next year and we definitely will be back more prepared.

From The Head of TIPS
Dear Parents,
This week we were pleased to host Penang Japanese School for Year 2 & 3, as part of our exchange programme
with them. The children made new friends together as they spent the day experiencing a range of learning
opportunities together. They had a maths session learning all about perimeter. They also created a joint piece of
artwork using ideas from the Rainbow Fish. Each child decorated a scale that was put together to create this final
picture. Both schools have one so that they can display it to remind each other of this great day. Each group also
learnt to sing a song about greetings in many languages. During the outdoor session the children played parachute
games, enabling the new friends to co-operate together whilst having great fun. Everyone had a great day and our
children are now writing thank you letters to their new friends. This is an annual event and we look forward to next
year when we shall visit the Japanese School.
