Saft has been chosen by BAE Systemsto supply lithium-ion batteries for itsTalisman ‘M’ autonomous underwatervehicle (AUV). The vehicle wasunveiled in 2007 and is designed tomeet the growing demand from naviesfor independent vehicles that canundertake a variety of oftendangerous tasks, includingdealing with mines.

Talisman ‘M’ is approximately 4.5 mlong by 1.7 m wide, weighs around1,000 kg, can carry payloads of 500kg or more and can operateat depthsof up to 300 m. Propulsion andmanoeuvre control is provided by fourSeaeye SMS ducted-fan thrusterswhich drive it at speedsup to 5 knots. The thrusters enable itto hover, move vertically and turn inits own length. The vehicle is designedto operate with a high degree ofaccuracy throughout its autonomousmissions.

Each Talisman ‘M’ vehicle is equippedwith two or four battery pods,depending on its application. Li-ion isthe preferred technology because ofits fast charge times, high energycapacity, excellent power/volume ratioand its long service life withoutmaintenance.

As a recognized world leader inadvanced battery systems, Saft is anexisting supply partner of BAESystems. Among other contracts itsupplies batteries for the company’sSting Ray torpedo.

High performanceIn its basic configuration, Saft’slithium-ion power system can deliverup to 24 hours of continuousperformance to the Talisman. In arecent development the batteries canbe recharged on the surface by anintegral miniature 3hp diesel engine,extending its range and performancesignificantly.

Each of the 320 V - 45 Ah batteries,used on the Talisman ‘M’, will bemade up of Saft VL45E cells. Eachbattery has an integratedmanagement system which equalizesthe charging process across the cellsand provides safety monitoring andsecurity. It also feeds battery data tothe vehicle’s main on-board computer.

Saft’s VL45E Li-ion cells arespecifically designed to providehigh performance from a compactlightweight unit.

Highlighting the importance ofTalisman to the development ofintelligent autonomy in the defencesector, especially in carrying outdangerous missions, Andy Tonge,Talisman project manager at BAESystems (Underwater Systems)Maritime Autonomy Group says:“Talisman ‘M’ can perform the type ofdangerous roles currently carried outby service men and womenthroughout the world – locate, identifyand neutralize mines in one singlemission.”

The supply of reliable, proven batterytechnology from Saft is central to thefulfillment of Talisman’s role in thefast-developing ‘new defence’ sector inwhich autonomous vehicles will play animportant part.

BAE Systems is aiming its Talisman‘M’ vehicle at global markets.
