What is a preposition?

A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence. The word or phrase that the preposition introduces is called the object of the preposition.

Prepositions are important grammatical words in our vocabulary that explain the relationship between two things as in the following example:

The orange is in the box.

The preposition in this example is the

word "in" and is connecting the words "orange" and "box."
