• The word Angklung originated from the Balinese words ”angka” meaning “tone “ and ”lung”: “broken”. Angklung then means an incomplete tone.

• In Sundanese dialect, the name comes from the actual rattling sound: “kurulung angklung”.

The Angklung is a musical instrument or rattle made out of 2, 3 or 4 bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. The black bamboo is chosen and cultivated as it is the most ideal type of bamboo (thick, succulent & malleable yet hardy) that can be crafted to produce an excellent tone.

- believed to have appeared in Indonesia during the Hindu dynasty, in the Sunda province of West Java, INDONESIA in the

7th - 15th Centuries

- important role in the Sundanese ritual ceremonies to honour Dewi Sri, the goddess of fertility, in a hope that their life and land would be blessed; in courtly and everyday living.
