Some children and their families might regard Muslims and the study of Islam as condoning terrorism.

How could you alter their opinion?

Points to remember:

Muslims always show respect for the prophets by following their names with the words: ‘Peace be upon Him’. When the names are written the letters ‘pbuh’ are used.

NEVER put a human image to Allah.

6 ARTICLES of FAITH 1. ALLAH The one God. He is the creator and

sustainer of all things that exist. He transcends the possession of any physical attributes. He has no parents, children, associates or partners. He is described by His 99 names. There is a 100th name that is unknown - emphasising the unknowable dimension of Allah.

6 ARTICLES of FAITH 2. ANGELS Muslims believe angels are created by God

from light. They do not take human form like Western angels. They are unlike humans, they have no free will. They do the bidding of God. They deliver revelations to the Prophets. Each person has 2 angels watching over them, one records the bad and one the good. This will be used on the Day of Judgement.

6 ARTICLES of FAITH 3. PROPHETS or MESSENGERS Human beings chosen by God to convey

His message and to guide other humans. Muslims believe in all the prophets or messengers that God has chosen and that God continually gave messages to the Prophets until the last guidance which was given to Muhammad (pbuh).

5. THE HEREAFTERMuslims believe that this life is much

shorter than the life hereafter. Muslims have faith in the reality of

the hereafter, the Day of Judgement, Resurrection, Paradise and Hell.

6 ARTICLES of FAITH 6 DIVINE DECREEThe belief in God’s decree. God has power

in all things. All that happens is according to His will. Nothing is supernatural or random. They are given free will and need to strive to do their best in all situations as they do not know where their destiny lies. Whatever occurs is to be taken with acceptance of the infinite wisdom of God.

THE QUR’AN

The Qur’an is the Holy book for Muslims.

The Qur’an ( Koran) is treated with the utmost respect and certain rules have to be applied when reading from it.

‘…these are the words straight from God ….’ Muslims believe that Muhammad (pbuh)

received the word of God from the Angel Gabriel (Jibril). The angel appeared to Muhammad (pbuh) one night in a cave where he often went to think. The words were memorised as the Prophet could not read. He recited them to his wife and friends who also memorised them. At a later date they were written in Arabic and formed the book known as the Qur’an which means ‘Recitation’.

THE FIVE PILLARS of ISLAM

Muslims express their faith through actions that shape their everyday lives.

They are described as the actions that arise out of belief.

SHAHADAH the declaration of faith

‘There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet.’

‘There is no god except Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.’

SALAH prayer

Muslims pray five times daily: They face Mecca as they pray. Before sunrise, after midday, late

afternoon, at sunset, during the night.

Before praying wudu must be performed and there are strict rituals to adhere to.

SAWM fasting

In the ninth Muslim month, Ramadan – all, healthy adult Muslims fast from dawn until sunset.

The intention is to clear the body, to take stock and be reflective.

ZAKAT welfare tax

Each year Muslims are expected to give a fixed proportion of their savings in order to help the poor.

In this way they feel their wealth is ‘made pure.’

HAJJ pilgrimage

All Muslims hope to be able to afford to perform the pilgrimage to Makkah (Mecca) at least once in their lifetime.

This is not obligatory, the Qur’an states that individuals should only perform Hajj if they are physically fit enough to travel, can afford to do so and do not put their family at risk.
