Early on, parents ought to teach their children proper oral health and hygiene practices to prevent problems down the line, such as cavities and gum disease. One easy way to do so is to lead by example. Parents can demonstrate to children the importance of oral hygiene by regularly brushing and flossing and by avoiding sugary foods that encourage cavities.
Teaching Oral Hygiene Besides modeling good behavior, parents can
teach their children proper brushing technique. Until children master this skill, parents should supervise brushing. Ensure that children keep toothpaste in their mouth and spit it out when brushing is complete. Do not allow them to swallow it. Instruct them that they ought to brush the front, top, and backside of each tooth.
Flossing requires more manual dexterity than brushing. Therefore, until children reach about 8 years of age, parents should floss for them.
