of Bangladeshof Bangladesh
INTRODUCTIONRoad safety is a global socio-economic concern.Road accident rates and fatalities are alarmingly higher in developing countries like ours.Road safety audit is relatively new and highly cost-effective tool for accident prevention.Focus is given on the existing streets in and around the BUET Campus.“Prevention is better than cure” is the main motivation of the study.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
What is Road Safety Audit?
According to AUSTROADS 2002, “A road safety audit is a formal examination of a future road or traffic project or an existing road, in which an independent, qualified team reports on the project’s crash potential and safety performance.”
While doing the visit, it was seen that one of the major issue was sign related problems. The outcome of a road safety audit is a Road Safety Audit Report, that identifies any road safety deficiencies regarding sign issue and makes recommendations to remove or reduce the deficiencies.

Table - Inventory of Existing Traffic Signs
Necessary regulatory, warning and information signs are not found in many places. Some are placed in wrong position.Existing signs are not conspicuous and clear.Sometimes signs are not as per standard. Some of the existing signs are not visible due to billboards, posters, trees.

PROBLEMS
Necessary regulatory, warning and information signs are to be placed.Signs having faded color in background, letters, symbols and borders should be repaired.Correct signs are to be used for each situation and existing signs which are not at right place are to be relocated at proper place.Non-standard signs placed at the shoulders are to be removed and appropriate signs to be placed at proper location.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Photo: ‘USE OF HORN’ sign near VC’S Resident
Photo: A3 ‘NO ENTRY’ sign near gate 1 from 7:00 am to 8:15 am
Photo: A 37 ‘ONE WAY TRAFFIC’ Regulatory sign is used near
Gate 2
Some suggested signs at various locations are shown below:
SI No
Location Existing Sign Standard sign Comments
1 BUET Main Gate
Improper placement and shape, size and color is not standard.Should be placed outside of the gate
2 In front of Academic Building
Should be replaced by horn prohibited sign
3In front ofEME Building
Should be replaced with proper sign & marking
Recommended Solution
Recommendations are already placed before.
There are no such guidelines for road safety auditing process for institutional areas in our country. So “Guidelines for Road Safety Audit” of AUSTROADS 2002 is used to do the study. No standard of sign has found for the institutional areas in our country. So “Traffic Sign Manual” published by “Bangladesh Road Transport Authority” is used as standard in the study area.
