A Piece of Green Paradise in Urban AreaWith green building design and technology, Wish Garden, an aquatic plant life nurtured by recycled rainwater, provides an escape from the concrete jungles for Taipei residents.
Since the 1960s, while experienced rapid growth in economy, Taiwan went through a painful learning curve over environmental protection. After years of efforts, Taiwan is now renowned for its waste reduction and recycling scheme. In addition, Taiwan is also a major producer of solar cells, wind turbines and other eco-friendly equipment. As foreign trade a key driver behind Taiwan’s economic development, Taiwanese government is backing exports of green products and services to reboot the economy.

GTPOEco-LabelsTaiwan Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) launched the Green Mark Program in 1992 to encourage green production and green consumption. More eco-labels have been introduced to help the public identify qualified green products since then.
Green ProcurementTo boost the demand for green products, Taiwan launched governmental green procurement program in January 2002. In 2010, Taiwan government’s green procurement value has reached TWD 9.1 billion (USD 0.3 billion), 4.5 times of the value in 2002. The industry also started green procurement programs since 2007, and the value has been fast growing.

GTPOGreen BuildingAlong with the internationally recognized green building assessment programs, Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Taiwan has also developed a green building certification since 1999. Ecology, Energy Saving, Waste Reduction, and Health (EEWH) is the world’s first and only evaluation system for tropical and subtropical climates.
Up until now, more than 3,000 buildings have received EEWH certification. That means approximately TWD 3 billion (USD 10 million) worth of electricity and water were saved.
LEDWith its integrated and specialized supply chain, Taiwan has been one of the major manufacturing countries for global LED market. However, Taiwan’s strength for LED is not simply manufacturing but also design. Over the past years, Taiwan’s LED lighting products have been awarded internationally for its high performance and stylish look.

Eco-TextilesTaiwan’s position as the most reliable source for functional and ecological textiles was recognized by major international sportswear brands.
In addition to the comprehensive textile production system, Taiwan’s polyester sector has extended its operation cycle to accommodate a well-established recycling scheme of PET bottles. Each year 90,000 tons are reclaimed and transformed into textiles after being crushed and made into staple fibers for weaving.
