Tactile movie systemThe MPEG-4 system is used to implement an enhanced

tactile movie system.

It is extended by adding a new node called TactileDisplay.

Tactile contents are represented as a greyscale video called

tactile video  within the TactileDisplay node.

Gloves with vibrating motors are used to deliver tactilestimuli to users as they watch movies.

Design of the glove type tactile

displaySensations are provided by many actuators on the

gloves.

Four tactile actuators are attached to the front part of each digit of the inner glove.

It allows the rectangular tactile video to be directly mapped onto the tactile array.

The electrical system of the display consists of four key components:

1) a battery

2) a microcontroller

3) a Bluetooth communication module

4)vibrating motors

All control hardware is embedded in the glove wrist bands.

The control of the gloves is wireless which enablesunencumbered viewing.

Tactile rendering process

The tactile device controller is connected to the tactilehardware

It translates the greyscale video representation into anarray of varying actuation intensities.

Initially, the scene descriptor provides the decoded

greyscale tactile video frame

This information typically contains the

actuation intensity of each element in the tactile array.

When the tactile array size does not match the tactile video size, re-sampling is performed .

A P WM algorithm is used to render stimuli of varyingmagnitude according to the intensities specified in the

 video.

This system is customizable and can be used to drivetactile devices of varying shapes and configurations.

A tool for tactile movie authoring Ease the process of creating tactile content to

accompany audiovisual media.

A tactile video is created by drawing lines with atactile brush on a semi-transparent tactile canvas .

The cells of the tactile array are spatially mapped to this tactile video.

ADVANTAGESIncreases immersive multimedia experiences.

Equipments worn are very comfortable.

Effective interpretation possible.

DISADVANTAGES

Ist person metaphor is not provided.

Tactile cues applied only to the hands.

Viewers may experience some confusion if all the

tactile cues are displayed to the hands.
