TRANSPORT OF WATER & NUTRIENTS IN PLANTSBiology ATAR Unit 2
Chapter 12Pages 302-305; 309-316
VASCULAR TISSUE Xylem and phloem are
tubular pathways through which fluids flow. They form the circulatory system of plants
Xylem and phloem vessels are found in the roots, stems and leaves of plants are referred to as vascular tissue
Vascular tissue is found extensively throughout the plant, from the root tips to the ends of leaves
XYLEM Xylem transports water
and nutrients absorbed from the roots
It is made up of 2 cell types: tracheids and vessel elements
They are tubular in shape and have pitted walls
Lignin
As xylem cells mature, they die and leave behind hollow cells supported by the remaining cell wall
Wood is composed entirely of xylem tissue
PHLOEM Phloem is conductive tissue
involved in the transport of sugars (sucrose)
There are 2 types of phloem cells: sieve cells and companion cells
Phloem cells are living cells with no nucleus or mitochondria and are connected to each other by sieve holes
Phloem is located outside the xylem in woody stems and forms the inner part of the bark
When a tree is ringbarked, it cuts the phloem tissue and causes the tree’s death
