1. PROJECT RATIONALE
Barangay Fatima General Santos has large, extended families requiring great financial resources to sustain
their daily requirements. Requirements are not always met due to food insecurity, lack of employment and
income. Especially the OPs (Older Person) ages 50 to 60 , Senior Citizens (SC) aged 60 and up and children
(teenagers) in conflict with the law (CICL) aged 14 to 17 are found to be groups most vulnerable to this.
The General Santos City government has expressed the need to address this issue through different
strategies involving community and household, including that of sustainable urban gardening. Barangay
Fatima Council, the Barangay OLDER PERSON/SENIOR CITIZEN Federation, Barangay Environmental
Management Office (BEMO) propose the SUSTAINABLE URBAN GARDENING scheme, developed with
partner PASALI Philippines Foundation (PPF) who is to be responsible for facilitating the exchange of
knowledge and practice concerning sustainable gardening and other development aspects.
SUSTAINABLE URBAN GARDENING
Sustainable urban gardening (SUGa) is the organic cultivation of high-valued crops with methods and
materials that minimize negative impact on the environment. It includes organic gardening, vermiculture

and the use of a specifically designed crop house. In a crop house favorable conditions can be
maintained: shield from too much sun, water distributed evenly, fertilizer and alternatives easily applied,
weeds, diseases and pests minimized, etc. The target group will learn to apply the techniques and produce
high-value crops of which the sales are their income.
With the base elements of organic gardening, work done by two vulnerable groups, environment, this
scheme addresses food security, livelihoods and ecological sustainability (response to global warming and
polution) simultaneously. This project is an experimentation round, to create a demo garden. Replication to
other barangays can be determined during and at the end this period.
2. TARGET LOCATION AND BENEFICIARIES
The area selected for this project is barangay Fatima G.S.C, since it is an initiative brought on by its leaders.
In 2008 about 80,000 inhabitants were estimated to live there, now the population is estimated at 140,000
inhabitants (list barangay Fatima). The Older Persons and the Children who Need Special Protection, their
families, and the community of Barangay Fatima are the direct beneficiaries of this project.
The OP are considered the vulnerable group in this barangay, with often no means of support. The CNSP are
extremely susceptible to drugs, alcohol and gangs. Still this group belongs to poverty and an issue on
neglecting their voices until now by means of livelihood program is the major concern. And the garden will introduce the value of organic foods and ecologically responsible production to the community.
OP and CNSP are organized group in the barangay Fatima GSC. Aside from helping them. They choose as
a part of providing sustainability to the community. Within the community there must a number of
household as second beneficiaries of this project.
