A “LEED” for Fleets

● Originally developed with NAFA – nation’s major fleetmanager organization – BY AND FOR FLEETS

● Sets a standard to measure fleet progress againstspecific reduction targets – the “LEED” of Fleet

● Metrics: reduce fuel use; reduce climate and criteriaemissions; increase efficiency

● Provides independent review of fleet progress – givesguidance on strategies – but encourages innovation

A sustainable fleet is one who manages and reduces net environmental impacts – at or ahead of the pace required for environmental need by demonstrating:

• Improved air quality through emission reduction• Increased fuel economy• Reduced fuel usage

CALSTART sustainable fleet program provide fleets the tools and methods to help fleet managers measure efficiency, fuel reduction while tracking improvements over time.

WHAT MAKES A FLEET SUSTAINABLE

The program serves as a guide to set the course towards continuous improvement

TECHNOLOGY AND FUEL OPPORTUNITIES

Powertrains

Drivetrains

Fuel

Natural Gas Biodiesel ElectricityHydrogenPropane

Transit agencies, fleets and private owners are looking to maximize fuel efficiency and reduce costsToday, there are numerous options for vehicle efficiencies:

– Right Sizing

– Operator Training

– Idle Reduction

– Vehicle Aerodynamics

– Vehicle Equipment

– Vehicle Technology

SUSTAINABLE FUEL NEUTRAL OPPORTUNITIES

Vehicle efficiency isn’t just about your fuel and powertrain choice.

Fleets are responsible for developing a plan or work strategy document for taking action steps over three or more years to make the fleet more sustainable. The plan should:

1) Set a Goal: Establish sustainability as a fleet management goal

2) Develop Sustainability metrics: Establish a baseline with x% fuel or emissions reductions or efficiency improvements in a time period range of 3 to 5 years.

3) Measure: Establish measuring mechanisms (monitoring tools/analytics) to track, benchmark, and report on fleet fuel consumption

4) Initiate and Review: Kick off your plan and be sure to develop a process for an internal annual review of sustainable fleet plan and policy

DEVELOPING YOUR SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

BECOMING ACCREDITED

Why become an accredited sustainable fleet through CALSTART/NAFA?

RecognitionShowcase your sustainability leadership

Measurable Improvements Emissions and efficiency improvements with metrics

Accreditation ValidationYour sustainability efforts will be validated by ourindependent and confidential organization

Build clean communitiesImproved air quality improves public health, and mitigates climate-related changes

You set the strategy… … the program measures the results

Getting started can be as simple as submitting some simple fleet information

WHAT IS NEEDED TO GET STARTED1. User Information: basic fleet information

2. Sustainable Fleet Plan: fleet creates this plan which sets goals and

measures success

3. Efficient Driver Training: show proof of efficient driving training and

tracking method

4. Idle Reduction: show proof of anti-idling policy and tracking/enforcement

method

5. Vehicle Fuel Tracking: show method for tracking fuel usage

6. Fuel Data: track alternative fuel usage for baseline and reporting years

7. Baseline Year Data: vehicle class, year, fuel type, and miles driven

8. Reporting Year Data: vehicle class, year, fuel type, and miles driven

All Data is 100% Confidential

Baseline year data vs. Reporting year data determines the latest:

● Number of advanced technology vehicles● Percentage of alternative fuel used● Improvement in fuel economy● Improvement in air quality (NOx & PM)● GHG emissions reductions

CHANGE IN FLEET DATA

BENEFITS OF CALSTART MEMBERSHIP

!Ai WHAT SIZE AM I?

CASTART Fleet managers should understand their fleets needs:

- What are the vehicles used for?

- What mileage are the vehicles seeing?

- Is there significant downtime? J - Is the vehicle fleet optimal?

Fleet Rightsizing is data driven decisions can help enable choices

that can effect your overall fuel use, CO2 footprint and TCO

Rightsizing is not a once and done activity - Review, Right size and Repeat.

Behaviors and how vehicles are driven can make a big impact quickly

– Administering proper tire maintenance

– Following the speed limit

– Reducing or eliminating idling of vehicles

– Avoiding sharp braking and accelerating

Drivers and operators should be more mindful they are about driving as eco-friendly driving habits equate to more fuel savings

BEHAVIORS DRIVE IMPROVEMENTS

The main component for any change in driver behavior is always the same: TRAINING

Idle reduction: limiting the amount of time that vehicles idle unnecessarily is a key strategy for increasing fuel efficiency and reducing petroleum use.

– Establishing an anti-idling policy

– Turning off engines when not in use

– Start/Stop Technologies

For vehicles that need power for non propulsion it gets more complicated, however there are solutions:

– Engine idle management systems

– Heaters for cab and/or engine block

– Auxiliary power systems

– Electrified parking spaces

STOP IDLING AND START SAVING BIG

Idling in the US uses more that 6 billion gallons of fuel at a cost of more than $19 billion each year

Heavy vehicles lose a tremendous amount of energy from wind resistance, braking, and rolling resistance

Fleets and owner-operators should look for aerodynamic solutions that cut fuel costs

but do not increase maintenance costs nor require driver attention and costly repairs.• Gap Reducer • Tail• Skirt• Under trailer• Aerodynamic mirrors• Splash guard

CONTROLLING THE AIR FLOW

Aerodynamic losses can account for about a 45% decrease in efficiency

Low Rolling Resistant (LRR) technology LRR tires are used on three axle positions:

• Trailer (Rear Axle)

• Steer (Front Axle)

• Drive (Center axle)Super-Single Tires• In Class 8, replacing traditional dual tires with one super-single (also

called wide-base or single-wide) tire can save fuel by reducing vehicle weight and rolling resistance, which means the engine doesn't need to work as hard.

EQUIPMENT CHOICES

Equipment choices can reduce both costs and emissions for long-haul class 8 tractor-trailers by 3% or more
