Newcomer District Program
The SIOP Model is a research-based and validated model of sheltered instruction. Professional development in the SIOP Model helps teachers plan and deliver lessons that allow English learners to acquire academic knowledge as they develop English language proficiency.
• Provides a wide range of scaffolding strategies to communicate meaningful input in the content area to students while adapting learning to suit ELLs English proficiency level.
• The SIOP is not a step-by-step approach, but rather a framework for organizing best practices in an inclusive setting.
Best Teaching Practices through Conscious, Purposeful and Intentional Instructional Design
ECSD Model for SIOP
• Bring SIOP trainers to Edmonton for two day training sessions in the fall
• SIOP presentation to principals for overview (first year of implementation)
• Invite schools to participate, encouraging 2-5 teachers from a school to participate to build capacity at school site.
• District ESL consultants provide at least two Call-Back sessions to further teachers’ understanding of SIOP, engage in meaningful strategies and activities, and to have an opportunity to share with teachers from other schools
• Cohort of 30+ teachers
– Many participants are expected to return to their schools and share their new knowledge with colleagues
– If two cohorts possible, separate into elementary and secondary
Newcomer District ProgramJunior and Senior High
• The Newcomer Program is designed to meet the needs of recent immigrant students who demonstrate the following characteristics:
– Limited to no written literacy in their first language
– Limited to no literacy in English
– Interrupted or no formal schooling
• Focus on a developing a solid foundation in English literacy and numeracy that will allow the student the ability to participate in the inclusive classroom with accommodations to regular programming.
