HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK (PAGE 1 OF 3)
One of Maui’s biggest attractions is the Halekala National Park. This dormant volcano (non-active) is know to be
the “quietest places on earth” due to its remote location. The summit (Pu’u’ula’ula) soars more than 10,000ft
above sea level and it is easy to see why so many visitor go to this National Park. Haleakala literally translates
into the “house of the rising sun” in the Hawaiian language and as many guests will say, seeing the sun rise here
is one of the most breath taking experiences. We wanted to share a little more information with you about this
incredible attraction along with some things to expect when you visit during different times of the day.
Weather - Due to high elevation, the weather here changes quickly and we do recommend that guests are
prepare accordingly for ranging temperatures and conditions at all times. Usually temperatures are about 30
degrees different at the summit of Haleakala compared to the beach towns. Often times the summit area will be
quite windy during the early morning and evening hours and the day time hours are usually calmer. When driv-
ing at Haleakala, we do recommend to take your time and be aware of the changing conditions. The elevation
between 7,000ft and 9,000ft will often have cloud coverage directly on the road. Drive carefully!
What To Bring - Guests should always be prepared for a variety of changes include wind, rain, sunshine, and
chilly temperatures. We recommend to have a few different layers of clothes available to you are at Haleakala
National Park including jacket. Don’t forget ample water and snacks as there are not stores found in the park.
Additionally you may wish to bring sunblock or hat to protect yourself from the sun.
Places to Visit - From the National Park entrance, guests will have about 30 minutes further of driving to the
actual summit, though there are some scenic places to stop at (pull overs and parking lots) to take pictures or just
to visit. The Ranger’s Station is typically open from 8am—345pm (daily) in which will have great information
about the National Park including plant and wildlife information. One of our favorite overlooks on the way up to
the summit is Leleiwi Overlook. This 1/4 mile long trail is beautiful to visit to see into the crater.

Haleakala Sunrise - During the sunrise, guests will see a spectacular display of colors as the sun rises from
beneath the cloud layer. Many guests will drive to the summit to see the sunrise and we do recommend arriving
45 minutes before the sunrise time to ensure you can locate parking and find a nice place to observe the sunrise.
As beautiful as this is, temperatures can be around freezing point with gusty winds. We like to recommend to
have a jacket and dress in warm clothes for this trip. It does take about 1 hour and 45 minutes to travel from
Kahului to the top of the Haleakala pending on conditions. Please drive carefully! Tours are also available.
Haleakala Sunset - Guests will be able to enjoy a beautiful sunset from the summit when conditions are
clear. It is quite common for there to be cloud build as the day goes along and at times seeing the sunset from
the summit can be hit or miss for this reason. Conditions during the evening are similar to sunrise and you
should always anticipate cold temperatures and gusty winds. Sunset tours are available for those interested.

gardless if you are an avid hiker or not. Most of trails found at Haleakala are rather lengthy (several miles each
leg), though guests will often hike partially down in to the crater and return. It is about 4 miles from the Summit
down to the Haleakala Crater floor. For those guests looking for a shorter hike, one of the best views is on the
1/4 mile long trail at the Leleiwi Overlook. Don’t miss out on our Hiking Guide to Maui.
