While doing some research for possible hiking trails for our upcoming youth retreat, I came across the Little Brier Gap Trail. Part of the historical significance of this trail included the Walker Sisters Place. You see, the five Walker sisters had been deeded their father's 123-acre farm, and they refused to sell their land to the National Park. In the 1930s, they were granted permission to remain on their land. In letters to the director of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, the sisters were described as "rooted to the soil." And legend has it that President Franklin Roosevelt visited the women to convince them to sell their land upon their deaths. These five sisters kept up their old way of life until the last sister died in the 1960s. They didn't let pressures from the outside force them to give up what their father gave them. These women were very poor, uneducated in a scholarly sense, and could have easily been bullied into giving up their land. However, they earned the respect of the director of the park, and be-cause of their stubbornness, they left a lasting legacy on his-tory and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
Their story made me think. Our Father gave us something more precious than farm land. We have the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Often, we have too many pressures from the outside to give it up, to let it go, to sell it (or sell out) for less than it's worth. We need to make sure we aren't giving in to the world so easily.
We also need to be fighting for our home, just like the Walker Sisters. Our home isn't a cozy abode in the moun-tains; it is a mansion not made with hands. The world is try-ing to keep us from our home, but we need to be as stubborn and convicted as the five Walker Sisters. Are you building a legacy to be known as convicted?

“For God so loved the world, that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish
but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
Consider how “Great” the plan of God is that saves us from our sins!
God—The Greatest Giver. So loved—The Greatest Degree. The World—The Greatest Object.
That He gave—The Greatest Act. His Only Begotten Son—The Greatest Gift. That Whoever—The
Greatest Opportunity. Believes—The Greatest Simplicity. In Him—The Greatest Attraction. Should
not perish—The Greatest Promise. But—The Greatest Difference. Have—The Greatest Certainty.
Eternal Life—The Greatest Possession.
Using verse and rhyme someone has written:
God—The Lord of earth and heaven, So loved—and longed to see forgiven. The World—in sin
and pleasure mad. That He gave—the greatest gift He had. His only begotten Son—to take our place.
That whoever—oh, what grace! Believes—placing simple trust. In Him—the righteous and the just,
Should not perish—lost in sin. Have Eternal Life—in Him.
