Coal to Electricity ….. Basics

Why Coal?
Share of Coal in Power Generation
Advantages of Coal Fuel
•Abundantly available in India
•Low cost
•Technology for Power Generation well developed.
•Easy to handle, transport, store and use
•India’s Coal Reserves are estimated to be 206 billion tones. Present consumption is about 450 million tones.
•Cost of coal for producing 1 unit of electricity is Rs 0.75.
•Cost of Gas for producing 1 unit of electricity is Rs 1.20.

General Layout of Thermal Power Plant

Main Equipments of Power Plant1. Coal handling plant2. Pulverizing plant4. Boiler5. Turbine6. Generator7. Condenser 8. Ash handling plant
8
Coal handling plant
•The function of coal handling plant is automatic feeding of coal to the boiler • A thermal power plant burns enormous amounts of coal.
•A 200MW plant may require around 2000 tons of coal daily.
9
Pulverizing plant
In modern thermal power plant , coal is pulverized i.e. ground to dust like size and carried to the furnace in a stream of hot air.
Pulverizing is done in pulverizing mill.
Pulverizing mill is further classified in three parts: Contact mill Ball mill Impact mill
10
Boiler
11
Turbine
A turbine is a rotary mechanical device that extracts energy from a fluid flow and converts it into useful work.
It consists one moving part called a rotor assembly.
Steam turbines are used for the generation of electricity in thermal power plants.
In thermal power plant turbine is sub divided in three parts:
HPT IPT LPT
12
Generator An electric generator is a device that
converts mechanical energy to electrical energy.
It is based upon the principle of electromagnetic induction.
the magnitude of EMF generates by generator is given by:
E=4.44φFN volts
Generators provide nearly all of the power for electric power grids.
14
Ash handling plant The percentage of ash in coal varies from 5% in good quality coal to about 40% in
poor quality coal.
Power plants generally use poor quality of coal , thus amount of ash produced by it is pretty large.
A modern 2000MW plant produces about 5000 tons of ash daily.
