A presentation I gave at the 3rd UK Summon and Information Literacy Day held at University Campus Suffolk, Ipswich on Tuesday 15th July 2014 (http://summoniluk.wordpress.com/). This is a case study, giving an overview of how MMU implemented Summon (or Library Search as we have branded it) and made the implementation successful. It focuses on how what I see as the key factors in our implementation and what effects they had on our teaching of information literacy.

Transcript of Successfully implementing Summon at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU)

Successfully implementing Summon at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU)

David Jenkins

This is a case study, providing an

overview of how MMU implemented

Summon successfully

Having staff on board

was key to the success

of our implementation

Leveraging current

thought and best

practice was key to

the success of our

implementation

Sharing and re-

using material was

key to the success of

our implementation

Recording and acting upon user

feedback was key to the success

of our implementation

The user is top priority

To provide users with the best service

it is vital to have staff on board

We did not have many staff on board

with our previous federated search service

We learned that a

change of approach

was needed to get the

best out of Summon

We started a Summon working group

We were more open with staff

We developed a healthy dialogue

We wanted staff to look at Summon

from the user perspective

We created personas

to help staff see

Summon from the user

perspective

We understood marketing would be important

So we created

key points to

market

Summon

“Be more confident

of explaining Library

search to students”

As a result of attending this session I will:

“Look forward to

using Summon

both with student

queries and when

checking ILLs”

As a result of attending this session I will:

“Promote Library Search

wherever possible”

As a result of attending this session I will:

“Use Summon/Library

Search in my InfoSkills

session”

As a result of attending this session I will:

We hosted the

2nd UK Information Literacy & Summon Day

“I found it really useful. I

now have a better idea

how I’m going to

integrate Library Search

into my teaching.”

“It was a very thought

provoking and helpful

day”

“Can’t wait to get a year

of Summon under our belt

and then get back to the

3rd UK Info Lit and

Summon Day!”

I created a presentation to teach

information literacy

with Summon based on best practice

“Brands are promises

that consumers believe

in”

Bill Chariavalle and Barabara Findlay Schenk

My information literacy teaching

is now more effective

96.6% of students stated

that they felt

more confident about

finding information for

their studies this year,

compared to 87.9% last

year

98.5% stated the

amount of

information provided

in the sessions was

about right this year,

compared to 84.8% last

year

What part of the session/ workshop did

you find most useful/of value and why?

"Library Search.

Great information on how

to be more accurate within

searches"

“Thanks for the slides -

brilliant! I'll upload them

on Moodle”

A culture of sharing and re-using

resources exists at MMU

The ultimate

evaluation of the

implementation came

in the form of a

three part

investigation into

student and staff use

of Summon

These investigations

found some

positive results…

.. .but there are still ways we can improve

Summon is more popular

for teaching information literacy

Summon has changed how

we teach information literacy
