Now we understand

K-3 students learn to read and

read to learn

A greater depth of understanding of complex content material can be attained when integrated social studies content from the various disciplines and critical-thinking skills are taught together.

Focuses on the TEKS (ELAR and SS)

Naturally lends itself to continuous improvement

Discuss the purpose for reading and listening to various texts

Ask and respond to questions about text

Monitor and adjust comprehensionMake inferencesRetell, act out, or summarize

important events in storiesMake connections to own

experiences and to the larger community

* Focus on the TEKS

12

Obtain information about a topic using a variety of resources

Express ideas orally based on knowledge and experiences

Create and interpret visual and written material

Use a problem solving processUse a decision-making process Use standard grammar, spelling,

sentence structure, and punctuation Identify main idea, fact and opinion,

cause and effect, and categorize information

* Let’s Start With The TEKS

1.11B - Identify rules and laws that establish order, provide security, and manage conflict. “

13

1.11A - Explain the purpose for rules and laws in the home, school, and community.“

* Using Think-Puzzle-Explore to introduce a topic

What do you think you know about rules and laws?

1.What puzzles you about rules and laws?

2.How would you explore and learn more about rules and laws?

3.

14

* What is this text mostly about?

15

Social Studies Process Skill – 1.18B – Create and interpret visual and written material.

ELAR – Figure 19C – Monitor and adjust comprehension

ELAR– 1.14A - Restate the main idea heard or read

Social Studies Process Skill – 1.17B – Obtain information about a topic using valid visual sources

Questions to talk about when you are completing read alouds:

?

Does the author explain what the word means? Does the rest of the page help? Do the graphics provide clues? Is there a glossary?

• Read the word and

words around it

• Look at the pictures

• Is there a glossary?• Draw a picture or

write a sentence.

23

Pick a word that you don’t already know the definition of.

24

* Let’s talk about graphics in text

25

Recent research indicates that 60 percent of graphics in informational texts for 2nd and 3rd graders convey information not available in the written text (Fingeret, 2012).

Comprehension of graphical devices is a stronger predictor of overall comprehension of informational text than several other known predictors, including words read correctly per minute, listening comprehension, cognitive flexibility, attitude toward reading, and individual word reading skill, and is second only to vocabulary knowledge (Roberts & Norman, 2012).

* Let’s study graphics 26

1 Begin by giving students time to examine a graphic.

Ask, "What do you see in this graphic?" 2

"What do you see that makes you say that?“

3

"What else do you see?"4

* See – Think - Wonder

What do you think about that?

27

What do you see?

What does it make you wonder?

* Take a look at a picture
