Subject: News Blast Latest Updates and Informa4onDate: Monday, 11 May 2020 From: AusDance NSW
Dear Lauren,
Last week we celebrated International Dance Day and the Australian Dance Week. Ausdance NSW
hosted cultural economics Distinguished Professor David Throsby AO (Macquarie University), in a
special webinar focussing on the post-corona funding landscape for the Australian arts industry, in
particular Australian dance. Questions explored what role the dance sector can play in embracing
the positive (eg. environmental impacts) of this crisis, the value of the data collection that’s
happening across the country right now (including the Ausdance COVID-impact survey) and
whether we will see an increase in the federal government or a need to shift to entrepreneurial
spaces. We heard from NSW arts organisations as well as local, interstate and international artists –
thank you to those who submitted questions either in advance or during the rich conversation and
also, to those who joined us to listen in. We look forward to more constructive sector exchanges like
this in the months ahead.
As the peak body for dance in NSW, we will continue to drive this agenda in collaboration with
Ausdance National as part of our Federal government advocacy campaign.
We are still urging those that have yet to do so, to please fill out the COVID-19 Dance Sector
Survey. Nationwide the dance sector has a lost income of $6m, and a loss of $2m in projects. The
results from this survey are being used in Ausdance role to advocate for the sector. You can
complete the survey here>>>
COVID-19 funding rounds for all major bodies are closing soon. Please see a list of opportunities
below and get in touch if you require any assistance.
Finally, thank’s to all the special people in our lives who are providing care and guidance at this
time. We hope you enjoyed celebrating these people in your life over the weekend.
Stay safe, stay home and keep dancing.

Feature Article
'FROM THE VAULT'AN AUSTRALIAN DANCE RETROSPECTIVE
Ausdance National has launched a new virtual platform, 'From the Vault - a retrospective of
Australian dance'. It features two decades of the choreographic work of independent artists, small
and large companies, youth dance companies, and the culturally diverse work of First Nations
artists. It demonstrates the richness of Australian dance, much of which is now being lost through
severely diminished funding over this period and is a reminder to governments of the danger of
losing the best of Australia's dance without further investment.
We begin with some of those who have been awarded an Australian Dance Award for Outstanding
Achievement in Independent Dance since 2003. In the coming weeks, we'll also profile
choreographers from other dance sectors, including First Nations dance, youth dance practice,
small companies & projects, dance & disability, and community dance. We will also include some of
the Australian pieces commissioned by the larger companies in recent years.
We will add new videos each week starting on 4 May, so watch this space each Monday!
Currently, there are 11 films to view, with more on the way. They include:
Intimacy (2015) Torque Show & Michelle Ryan
Black Project 1 (2012) Antony Hamilton
On View Live Portraits (2016) Sue Healey
From the Vault (2019) Alison Plevey
Nuns' Night Out (2004) & Nuns' Picnic (2005) Julie-Anne Long
The Voyeur (2009) Clare Dyson
The Stance (2017) Liesel Zink
Gudirr Gudirr (2013) Dalisa Pigrim
Ausdance National and the Ausdance Network supports Australian dance artists and we work with
them to represent their interests to decision-makers at all levels.
