MISSIONSTATEMENTWarrenPointElementarySchoolisacommunityoffaculty,staff,families,andstudentswhoworktogethertocreateaneducationalenvironmentthatfostersgrowthandlearning.Ourmissionistomeettheneedsofourdiverselearnersbyprovidingamultitudeofopportunitiesdesignedtosupportourmembersontheirjourneytobecomingself-assured,productivecitizens.Themutualrespectofall individuals inspires academic, social, emotional and physical development of communitymembersasthey“crossthebridge”tonewexperiences.GENERALINFORMATIONHOURSOFSESSIONStudentsshouldarriveatschoolby8:35a.m.Weaskthatparentsdonotsendordrop-offchildrenearlierthan8:25a.m.,sincethereisnooutdoor/indoorsupervisionpriortothattime.Thefirstbellrings8:35a.m.forstudentstoenterthebuilding.Uponenteringthebuilding,studentsaretoreportdirectlytotheirclassrooms.Schoolbeginsat8:40a.m.Anystudentarrivingafterthe8:40a.m.bellisconsideredtardy.Dismissalisat3:00p.m.unlessotherwisespecified.Ifyoudonotpickyourchildupby3:15p.m.,yourchildwillattendaftercare.Theentrancetoaftercareislocatedonthefarendoftheparkinglot.Youwillneedtoringthedoorbell.EARLYDISMISSALSCHEDULEEarly dismissal time is 12:45 p.m.. SCHOOLWILLNOTBEOPENEDUNTIL10:10a.m. Youmayalsovisitthedistrict’sWEBSITEatwww.fairlawnschools.org.ABSENCESORTARDINESSStudentscannotfullybenefitfromaschool’seducationalprogramunlessattendanceisregularanduninterrupted.Weaskthatyoucalltheschoolattendanceline(x5000)by8:45a.m.ifyourchildisgoingtobeabsentinthemorningandby12:30p.m.fortheafternoonsession.Pleasestatethereasonfortheabsence.Thisprocedureisdesignedforsafety.Ifyoudonotcall,itwillbenecessaryforourschoolofficetocallyouathomeoratwork.Childrenareencouragedtobepunctual.Ifanystudentistardyexcessively,aletterwillbesenthomefrom the principal requesting ameeting to discuss potential solutions.We request that parentssupporttheirchild’seffortstoarriveontime.LUNCHPROGRAMAramark Dining Service sponsors the Fair Lawn School District’s lunch program. Prices will bedeterminedatthebeginningoftheschoolyear. Alunchmenuisavailableonlineontheschool’swebpage.LUNCH/RECESSSCHEDULEGrades1,2and3eatfromapproximately11:31to11:12:01andhaverecessfrom12:01to12:31GradesK&4willeatfrom11:31to12:01andhaverecessfrom12:01to12:31Recesswill be either indoors or outdoors, depending onweather conditions. When the relativetemperature is freezing or below, recess will be indoors. Children should come dressedappropriatelyforoutdoorrecessandareremindedtobringtheircoatstolunch.

Youmayalsopurchasebirthdaypencils, bookmarksor erasers, etc., for your child to sharewithhis/herclassmates.CONFERENCESANDVISITSParentsareinvitedtomeetwiththeirchild’steachertwiceayearatwhichtimepupilprogressisdiscussedandreportcardsdistributed.Theseconferencesareinthefallandspring.Parentsmayrequestaconferenceatanytimeandareencouragedtocontacttheteacherorschoolofficewheneverthereisaquestionorconcern.USEOFTHEOFFICETELEPHONETheofficephoneisforschoolbusiness.WeareNOTpermittedtotakestudentsoutofclasstoreceiveaphonecallortomeetwithavisitor.Wewilltakeamessageandhavethechildreturnthecallorpickupadropped-offpackagefromtheofficeduringtheirlunchperiodorattheendoftheday.VISITORSVisitors,includingparentsandotherrelatives,mustenterthroughthemainfrontdoor.Atalltimes,visitorsandguestsmustreportfirstanddirectlytotheMainOfficewhereavisitor’spasswillbeissued.Anynon-staffpersonfoundinthebuildingwithoutapasswillbedirectedtotheMainOffice.STUDENTPICK-UP/EMERGENCYARRANGEMENTSAnyparent/guardianpickingupastudentmustreporttothemainofficetosignoutthestudent.At that time, the office staffwill contact the classroom and request that your child pack his/herbelongingsandcometotheoffice.Parents/guardiansshouldnotbewalkingthroughthehallsortoclassroomstopickuptheirchildren.Oncethestudenthasbeencontacted,parentsmaywaitatthefrontentrancefortheirchildren.Theonlyexceptioniswhenachildgoeshomesick.Inthiscircumstance,his/herparent/guardianneedstosigninatthemainofficebeforegoingtonurse’sofficetopickuptheirchild.Astudentmaynotbepickedupbyanypersonotherthantheirparent/guardianwithoutaletter from the parent/guardian granting permission for an alternate person to pick-up. Thesesituationsshouldbehandledinthesamemannerasstatedabove.PARKINGATSCHOOLParkingspacesareavailableonthestreetinfrontofWarrenPointElementarySchool.Atnotimeshouldcarsbeparkedincrosswalksorindesignatedstaffparkingspaces.Inaddition,nooneotherthanteachersshoulddrivethroughtheteachers’parkinglot.ParentsarenottodropofforpickuptheirchildrenintheNoParkingorStandingzones.ATNOTIMEWILLPARKINGDIRECTLYINFRONTOFTHEMAINENTRANCEBEPERMITTED.THESEAREASSHOULDBEKEPTFREEFORSCHOOLBUSESANDEMERGENCYVEHICLES.

PTAMEETINGSBi-MonthlymeetingsareheldbythePTAoverthecourseoftheyear.PTAmembershipandactiveparticipation isencouraged.Through fundraisingprofits, thePTA isable toprovideour studentswithworkshops, assemblies andafter-school activities,as well aspurchasing muchneededequipmentandsupplies fortheclassrooms. ThePTAismadeupofbothparentsandteachersofWarrenPoint.BEFOREANDAFTERCARETheFairLawnCommunitySchooloffersbeforeandaftercareprogramsforstudentsintheWarrenPointElementarySchoolgymnasium.Theprogramsareinsessionfrom7:15a.m.-8:35a.m.beforeschool and 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. after school. For more information please call the Fair LawnCommunitySchoolat201-794-5420.STUDENTCODEOFCONDUCT StudentswhoattendWarrenPointElementarySchoolareexpectedtofollowagoldenrule:Treatotherpeopleandtheirthingsthewayyouwouldliketobetreated.Webelievethatthisruleisaclearcompasstoguideallbehaviorinallsituations.Inadditiontomodelingthisrulethroughdailyactions,thefacultyandstaffregularlyaddressthisrulethroughweeklycharactereducationsessions,regularreadaloudsessionsandschoolwideevents.Webelievethatelementaryschoolisatimetogrowandlearnfrommistakes.Therefore,weareguidedbyaprogressivedisciplinephilosophy.Becausewebelievethattheconsequencesforstudentsshouldhavemeaningandhelpthemlearn,wealsoexplorealternativeformsofdisciplineifwefeelitisinthebestinterestofthestudents.Infractionsthatarenotacceptableinaschoolenvironmentinclude,butarenotlimitedto:harassment, intimidation, bullying*, theft, destruction and/or defacing school property,fighting,leavingschoolpropertywithoutpermission,disrespecttofellowstudents/faculty,violation of acceptable use policy for technology, and inappropriate behavior that isdisruptivetothelearningorsafetyofothers.Possibleconsequencesinclude:

•Discussionwithstudentsand/ortheirparents•WrittenReflection•“CharacterReflection”-Lunch/Recessdetention•Afterschooldetention•Suspensionorexpulsion in thecaseofdangerousorunsafebehavior, seriousorrepeatedharassment,intimidation,bullying,*fighting,theftorvandalism.

Ourdisciplinestandardrequiresthatweaddressanyactionofwhichwearemadeawarebyinvestigatingitand,ifnecessary,byimplementingdiscipline.Ourphilosophyofprogressivediscipline focuses on teaching a student to behave properly so the consequencemay besimplytalkingtoastudentandrecordingtheincident,orassevereasasuspension.Shouldastudentrepeatthesameoffenseorseveralsmalloffenses,s/hewillreceivemoreseverediscipline.CounselingandtheChildStudyTeamservicesmaybeutilizedinordertoassiststudentsinadheringtotheStudentCodeofConduct.Teachersandadministratorsprovideadditionalgroupandindividualsupport,asappropriate. Keepingtheaboveinmind,pleasealsoconsiderthefollowing:

Ø Theteacherestablishes,withtheclass,aCodeofConductfortheclassroomcommunity.Anyquestionsinthisareashouldbedirectedtotheclassroomteacher.

Ø Childrenmaynotbringelectronicdevicestoschool,suchas,butnotlimitedto:tablets,IPods,radios, CD players or games. Storage and theft, as well as an interruption of classroomlearningtime,createunnecessaryproblems.Cellphonesaretobeoffandplacedinbackpacksforafterschooluseonly.

Ø Skateboards,wheeliesneakers,scooters,includingmanual,battery,orgaspoweredareneverallowedatschoolforanyreason.

Ø Forsafetyreasons,tacklefootball,contactsports,hardbaseballsandallothertypesofsportsequipmentarenotallowed.Allequipmentisprovidedforlunchrecessbytheschool.

Ø Tradingcardsofanykindarenotpermitted.Ø Toys and games fromhomeneed to be kept at homeunless instructed by the classroom

teacher.FourthGraders

Asrolemodels,participationinfourthgradefunctionsiscontingentupontheapplicationofWarrenPoint’sCharacterEducationPillars.Anyfourthgraderwhodoesnotrepeatedlyfollowtheguidelinesofthepillars,forexample,notcompletinghomeworkassignments,isatriskoflosingtheopportunitytoparticipateinafourthgradeorschool-widefunction.SCHOOLDRESSParentsareaskedtousejudgmentindressingtheirchildrenforschool.Keepinmindtheweather.Slipperysoles,high-heeledshoes,clogsoroutdoorbootsarenotappropriateindoors.Long,dangleearringspresentasafetyhazardforthewearerandshouldnotbeworntoschool.Hatsarenottobewornindoorsbyanyoneunlessauthorizedbytheprincipal.Duringwarmweather,childrenshouldrefrainfromwearingthefollowingtypesofclothing:

• Shortshorts• Skin-tight/immodesttopsorbottoms(please,nobarestomachs)• Offensivelogosprintedonclothing

Parents will be contacted for a change of clothing for students who come to school dressedinappropriately.

CHARACTEREDUCATIONTheWarrenPointElementarySchoolisstrengtheningthecharacterofourstudentsbyparticipatingin the Fair Lawn School District’s Character Education Program. Our program is based on thefollowingpillarsofcharacter:

RESPONSIBILITY–Studentpursuesexcellencewithself-controlandisaccountable.4. FAIRNESS–Studentsshowopen-mindednessandtreateachotherequally.5. CARING–Studentiskind,lovingandhelpsothers.6. CITIZENSHIP–Studentplaysbytherules,respectsothersandcontributestotheschool.

HEALTHINFORMATIONThehealthandsafetyofallstudentsisparamountatWarrenPointElementarySchool.ThestaffoftheHealthOfficetriestoensurethateverystudentisfunctioningathisorheroptimallevelofhealth.EMERGENCYCARDSUsing theGenesisParentPortal,please filloutemergencycontact information.Shouldyourchildbecome ill or injuredduring the schoolday, it is important thatwebe able to reachaparentorguardian.Ifyourhome/cellnumberchanges,pleaseupdatetheGenesisParentPortalasquicklyaspossibleornotifythemainofficeofthechange.ILLNESSPleasekeepyourchildhomeifhe/sheshowsanyofthefollowingsymptoms:

• Flushedfaceorothersignsoffever,suchascomplaintsofaheadache• Constantrunnynose,persistentcough,orsneezing• Sorethroat,earache,orswollenglands• Vomiting,nausea,ordiarrhea(mustbeFREEfromthesesymptomsfor24hourswithout

theuseofmedicationbeforereturningtoschool)• Conjunctivitisorrash–musthaveaphysician’sletterstatingthechildisnotcontagious

inordertoreturntoschool,unlesstheconditionnolongerisevident• Scratching/itchingofthescalp-childshouldbecheckedforlice.

MEDICATIONThe following requirements are needed for a child to receive prescribed or over-the-countermedicationsatschool:

1. Aphysician’swrittenorderwiththename,dosageandpurposeofthemedication2. Writtenpermissionfromtheparent/guardiantoadministerthemedication3. Themedicationmustbeintheoriginalcontainerwiththestudent’snameonit.Studentsare

not allowed to takemedication unsupervised. The only exception is a studentwhohas adoctor’sorderforself-medicatingwithaninhaler.Medicationmustbetransportedtoschoolbyaparent.Atyear’send,medicationsmustbepickedupbytheparent.

COUGHDROPSandLozengesareconsideredanover-the-countermedication,andmustfollowtheaboveregulations.Aparent/guardianletteralonedoesnotfulfillthecriteria.SCREENINGSInaccordancewithstateguidelines, theSchoolNurseconductsannualauditoryscreenings forallchildreningradesK-3.StudentsingradesK,2,and4willhavetheirvisionchecked.Height,weight,andbloodpressurewillbecheckedannuallyforallstudents.Parentswillbecontactedwithareferralregardinganyhealthneedsthatwarrantfurthermedicalevaluation.Requestsbyaparentorteacherforachildtobescreenedmaybesubmittedthroughouttheyear.IMMUNIZATIONImmunizationsmustcomplywithNewJerseyrequirements.Documentationofimmunizationsfromthepreviousschoolorphysician’sofficeisaccepted.Medicalexemptionrequireswrittenexplanationfromthephysician.PHYSICALEXAMSPhysicalexamsarerequiredforallnewstudentsandkindergartenentrants.Yourphysicianshouldcompletethisexamination.Fourthgradestudentsarerecommendedtohaveaphysicalexam(formsaresenthomeinthespringpriorto4thgrade).Ifyourchildishavingaroutinephysicalinanygrade,pleaserequestacopybesenttotheSchoolNursesohis/herschoolrecordsmaybekeptcurrentMEDICALCONCERNSParentsareencouragedtocontacttheHealthOfficeregardinganymedicalconcernstheymayhavewith respect to their child’s health. Please remember to keep us advised of any changes in youremergency contact numbers or if your home, work, or cell phone number has changed. Thesetelephonenumbersareimportantsothatwemayreachyouwithoutdelayshouldyourchildbecomeillorinjured.Pleasereporttothenurseanysurgery,contagiousdiseaseoraccidentwhichmayhaveoccurredoverthesummerorholidaysothatyourchild’shealthrecordmaybeupdated.SCHOOLINSURANCETheBoardofEducationhaspurchasedgroupaccident insurancecoverage forallstudentsduringschoolhoursonly.YoumustsubmitclaimstoyourprivatehealthinsurancecarrierfirstandthentheremainingbillstoBollinger,thecarrierprovidedbytheBoardofEducation.Inaddition,24-hourcoverageforinjuryordentalaccidentinsurancemaybepurchasedonanindividualbasis.HEALTHANDFITNESSPROGRAMPHYSICALEDUCATIONThe philosophy of physical education at Warren Point Elementary School is to instill goodsportsmanship, teamwork,andrespect foroneanother throughavarietyofsportsandactivities.WarrenPointElementarySchoolisfocusedonHealthandFitness.Studentsareencouragedtoeat

healthylunchesandsnackswhileatschoolandhome.Theeffortsoftheschoolwererecognizedin2004when the PTAwon the “NJ PTAOutstanding Family Involvement Award” for excellence inpromoting health and fitness. Policieswebpagefoundatwww.fairlawnschools.org.ChildrenmustwearsneakersduringPE,pantscannottouchthefloorandsleevescannotpassthewrist.ChildrencannotwearjewelrytoPE.ThePhysicalEducationteacherisnotresponsibleforholdingvaluablesduringclasstime.PHYSICALEDUCATIONEXCUSEYourchildmaybeexcusedfromphysicaleducationinstructiononcewithaparentletter.Thelettershouldstatethereasonfortheexcuse.Thestudentwillalsobeexcusedfromoutsiderecessonthatday.Aftertheonedayofbeingexcusedwithaparentalnote,theparentsmustgetaphysician’snotefortheirchildtobeexcusedfromP.E. A physician’s letter is required for all casts, immobilizers, splints, or crutches. The duration,limitationsandwhenthestudentmayreturntophysicaleducationinstructionmustbeincludedintheletter.HOMEWORKHomeworkisassignedtoreinforcetheskillsandconceptstaughtduringtheschoolday.Itencouragesresponsibilityandaccountabilityinourstudents.Parents,pleasesupportyourchildincompletingassignments.Whenastudentdoesnotcompletehomework,theparentswillreceiveaformnotifyingthemofthemissingassignment.StudentsareencouragedtostayforafterschoolhelpwiththeirteacheronTuesdays,WednesdaysandThursdays.Thestudentstayingaftermustbepickedupat3:30intheMainOffice.Othersiblingsmustbepickedupby3:00.Theycannotwaituntil3:30inthebuilding.
