Streamlight TLR-2 HL G lighting up the night
By: Sal Palma
Ive covered Streamlight for several years and I
continue to be amazed by how much value they
bring customers with their tactical lighting line.
Let me define the sometimes confused term
value. Value is a maximization of benefit per
dollar spent and does not translate to cheap; in
fact, it is quite the opposite. Streamlights
success has always been delivering a high value
product and their TLR-2 HL G is a 2015 example
of that philosophy.
Streamlights latest
TLR-2 offering
retains the same
familiar, tried and
true, packaging
including the companys patented rail grip
clamping system. Streamlight includes keys
specific to Glock-style, Picatinny, Beretta 92s,
S&W 99 and S&W TSW accessory rails, so youre
always guaranteed to get the perfect fit for your
weapon system.
Packaging is just about the only thing that has
remained relatively constant in the companys
line of rail mounted lights. Streamlight has
introduced major enhancements in the TLR line
year over year.
A couple of years ago, they upgraded their rail
mounted lights with TIR LEDs which stands for
total internal reflection. They perform far better
than reflector based technologies for
constructing a highly directional illumination
tool.
As the chart illustrates the TIR LED provides a
more tightly focused beam with far greater
relative intensity than a reflector based emitter.
Something rarely discussed by reviewers is the
importance of maintaining radiated beam
energy within a 60 cone. Designs relying solely
on reflectors will experience up to 28% of their
energy fall outside of that 60 envelope.

A little bit on the technical side, but its
important to recognize that TIR is a credible
technology not a catchy marketing term. My
bottom line is that TIR LEDs are much better at
producing concentrated tightly focused
directional light than reflector based designs.
Consistent with all prior year TLR-2s, the new
HL G includes an aiming laser. Its G
designation signifies green laser; however,
unlike many of its competitors, Streamlight uses
a direct drive laser. This is a direct emission
green laser diode operating in the 520nm
wavelength that is also small and robust. More
importantly, it is capable of operating within a
temperature band that is at least 40-50C wide
(4.4C to 49C).
Streamlights TLR-2 HL G retains the tactical
advantages available from all of the TLR-2 rail
mounted lights, but raises performance with
720 lumens of concentrated light and a green
laser module with exceptional visibility in all
lighting conditions.
Energy frugality is commendable, especially at
these performance levels. Continuous runtime
for the light is 1.5 hours on (2) CR123 batteries.
Running the laser alone delivers 17 hours of
runtime. Thats impressive but keep in mind
that environmental conditions do influence
runtimes.
The TLR-2 HL G is made from machined
aluminum and IPX4 water-resistant. This light
worked extremely well with my test 1911 and
FN tactical shotgun; however, it is a highly
capable accessory for any rail equipped
platform. For users preferring a remote switch,
the light is remote switch compatible but
requires the #69130 switch.
Law enforcement and military operators can
never have too great of a tactical advantage and
the TLR-2 HL G delivers in every category.
A robust aluminum housing, IPX4 water
resistance, momentary and continuous modes
of operation including the strobe, intuitive
paddle switches, 720 lumens of blazing light,
direct drive green laser with a wide operating
range and its weapon system agnostic. Even
more pleasant is its budget friendly street price
of approximately $340 U.S.D.
Youll be hard pressed to find greater value
from any manufacturer, so Streamlights TLR-2
HL G is an accessory youll want to consider for
your department, unit or home defense
weapon systems. Check it out!
