A STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND CHARACTERIZATION

By: Grant, Katrina and Madison Period 1

VALENTINE MICHAEL SMITHBy: Grant Hall

He Looks Like...“‘Smith is an intelligent

creature with the ancestry of man, but he is more martian

than man’” (Heinlein 7).

“‘What about his face?’ Jill looked puzzled. ‘Ben, have you ever seen an angel?’ ... ‘Well neither have I–but that is how he looked. He had old, wise eyes in a

completely placid face. A face of unearthly innocence’”(Heinlein 23).

He Lived...

“‘Correction to despatch 23-105: One survivor of Envoy

located’” (Heinlein 5).

On Mars

But Now Is...

On Earth

“He sent his ship’s surgeon to make sure that Valentine Michael

Smith was installed in a suite in the Bethesda

Medical Center...” (Heinlein 6).

He Does...

“The patient floated in the flexible skin of the hydraulic bed” (Heinlein 9).

“The young man Smith was busy staying alive” (Heinlein 8).

“‘Think, Jill. By our laws, Smith is a sovereign nation–and sole owner of the planet. Mars’” (Heinlein 27).

He Thinks...“None of his thinkings were Earth symbols” (Heinlein 9)

“The word ‘brother’ he considered first–the woman was reminding him that they had been joined by water” (Heinlein 17).

“‘I do not know’...‘How does a woman look? What makes you a woman?’”(Heinlein page 16)

He Says...

Others think of him...“Aside from his odd lack of expression she saw nothing strange about him...” (Heinlein 15). Jill...
