3. Influencing Factors

4. Environmental Journey

5. Emission Savings

6. Next Step

7. The Future

Outline

Who are we?

Over 2700 Bus Stops

Over 70 Routes

Over 700 Buses

Over 2000 Staff

Who are we?

Over 115 million Passenger Journeys per annum

Over 26 million miles covered per annum

Environmental Legislation

Euro 6 Requirement

Edinburgh and East Lothian AQMA’s

Local Authority and National Environmental StrategiesCustomer Expectations

Human Health

Influencing Factors

Environmental Legislation• 42% Carbon Reduction by 2020• 80% Carbon Reduction by 2050• Almost complete decarbonisation of road transport

by 2050

Local Authority and National Environmental Strategies

• Low Emission Strategy for Scotland• Sustainable Energy Action PlanCustomer Expectations• Lower Carbon Footprint• Comfortable, Reliable Journeys• Minimal Noise and Odours

Influencing Factors

Human Health• Impact to heart and lungs

Edinburgh and East Lothian AQMA’s• Central, West and East air quality standards areas

SCRT®

2004 Euro III B7RLE

SCRT®

• 70% reduction in NOx• 90% reduction in PM

• 99% reduction in other pollutants

‘Get there Greener’

SCRT® System

• Filter converts soot to ash and holds it inside the tank until it needs changed

• SCR catalyst reaction absorbs NOx

• Outlet is H2O

• CRT injects Adblue

Hybrid Journey

• Diesel-Electric hybrids• Operate on AQMAs• Regenerative braking• Stop-Start technology

Cleaner and Greener Technology

Series Hybrid Parallel Hybrid

ADL Enviro 400H

• Route 10

• 15 vehicles at Euro 5 EEV

• 2 AQMAs

• 10 x vehicles at Euro 5 EEV• 40 x vehicles at Euro 6• Four routes fully converted

Volvo 7900H

• Three AQMAs

• Savings in fuel of up to 39%• Up to 39% reductions in CO2• Reductions in NOx and PM

Emission Savings

Lothian Buses and Lothian Country Buses Euro 3 and above

City Mobility

The Next Step toward Zero Emissions

City Mobility

How does it work? - The Vehicle

The new concept is based on the chassis and body work of the existing Volvo 7900H with the addition of:

• Charging rails

• Bigger batteries for more electrical storage

• Enhanced driveline

• The ability to move at normal road speeds with zero

emissions

The Vehicles - Additional Components

Maintenance Charging Port

Charging Rails

Charge Switching Unit

Energy Storage System

Enhanced Driveline

Cabin Assembly Mast Inverted Pantograph

Charging Infrastructure

Telematics and Geofencing

• Telematics gives a full run down of real time or historic vehicle

performance statistics

• Gives information on speed, braking, driver performance, economy

performance

• Geofencing allows the zoning of pure Electric Motor operation

• Reports location based data

Energy, Emissions and Pollutant Reductions • Significant fuel savings• 40% of typical route mileage in electric mode• Silent Operation - Lower Noise Pollution

Emission Savings

Extended Zero Emissions running at normal speeds• Estimated 11 km in Electric Mode• No emissions when travelling through AQMAs

Other Cities Hamburg - Operational Demonstration

Other Cities Stockholm - Operational Demonstration

What does the future hold?

• Exhaust-free operation

• Silent

• Enables indoor bus stops
