Today’s Goals/Objectives:•Gain a “Big-Picture” understanding of our STEM Grant

•Gain a deeper understanding of STEM EDUCATION

•Gain a deeper understanding of Problem Based Learning (PBL) - Theory & Practices, Examples, Resources

•Gather a list of PBL RESOURCES to explore and utilize

•Come together & begin working as a BUILDING TEAM

•Draft a MEETING SCHEDULE for your building team

DoDEA STEM Grant Overview:

3- year, 2.5 million dollar grant awarded in June 2012

• Develop and Support Cross-Content STEM teams at each secondary site (7 sites)

• Provide Interactive technology, and the corresponding PD, for Cross-Content STEM team members

• Provide Flight Simulator Classroom curriculum, equipment, and PD for teachers

• Support afterschool and summer STEM opportunities • Support elementary science kit improvements• Support a district STEM coordinator and an elementary STEM

curriculum specialist (yrs. 2 & 3)• Support MAP testing in science (?)

The Different Faces of STEM

• SteM – science and math are the primary foci and are considered the most important

• S|T|E|M – each discipline stands on its own

• sTEm – a “CTE-type” emphasis that primarily focuses on preparation for selected careers in technology and engineering

• STEM – integrated focus involving science, technology, engineering and math that emphasizes content application

What is STEM Education anyways (1)?

Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education often has been called a meta-discipline, the “creation of a discipline based on the integration of other disciplinary knowledge into a new “whole”. This interdisciplinary bridging among discrete disciplines is now treated as an entity, known as STEM (Morrison, 2006).”

What is STEM Education anyways (2)?

STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy (Tsupros, 2009).

What is STEM Education anyways (3)?

“……STEM education is greater than any interdisciplinary paradigm. It is actually trans-disciplinary in that it offers a multi-faceted whole with greater complexities and new spheres of understanding that ensure the integration of disciplines. This concept is further reinforced by Kaufmann (2003) and by the fact that new innovations and inventions today tend to be made at the boundaries of these four disciplines, where they naturally overlap. Biochemistry, biomechanics, biophysics, biotechnology, and bioengineering are representative of the overlapping of the disciplines we know as biology (Hays Blain Lantz 2009).”

Team Time Expectations

1. Explore the work you want to pursue as a team and agree upon some common Goals/Objectives

2. Complete and submit a Calendar Draft for your building’s Cross-Content Team

3. Begin pursuing your Team’s Goals/Objectives

Budget Considerations $$$Total Team Budget:• $ 6,040 per 4 member team for CC STEM work• $ 7,550 per 5 member team for CC STEM work____________________________________________• Release Day Cost: Full day ≈ $120 per teacher

Half day ≈ $60 per teacher____________________________________________• Hourly pay: @ curriculum rate ≈ $26/hr. @ per diem rate ≈ $46 (varies based on salary)

Calendar Considerations

• Include 5-23-13 as a release day for your team!– We’ll meet here at the OESD for a full day.– You DO NOT have to pay for this from your Total

Team Budget number (it’s already factored in) !

• Plan for a time in late May or early June to have a DEBRIEFING MEETING with your building’s year 2 CC STEM Team.
