Steel Fabrication

in UAE

Alloy steel is a product of metallic bonding of steel with a variety of elements to improve its structural and mechanical properties. The elements bonded are steel in total amounts

between 1% to 50%.

Smelting is a form of metal extraction, where heat and

chemical reducing agents are used to separate the pure

metal base from the ore. The raw metal goes through a

long process in the production of steel.

Steel fabrication can take place in two ways:

Raw material Approach – The materials are heated up and melted down and basically mixed together to form steel.

Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) – Recycled steel is melted down and mixed with other materials to make steel.

Electric Arc Furnace Steel Fabrication

This method is easier and quicker than the raw material approach. Recycles steel is melted down in a furnace. The melted recycled steal is mixed with other materials to form new steel.

Steel is broadly categorized based on their chemical composition: Carbon steel Alloy steel Stainless steel Tool steel

Carbon Steel:

This is the most commonly produced steel, and amounts to about 90% of total steel production.

They contain trace amounts of alloy elements and can be categorized into:

Low Carbon Steels (0.3%) Medium Carbon Steels (0.3 – 0.6%) High Carbon Steels (more than 0.6%)

Alloy SteelAlloy steels are bonded with alloying elements in varying proportions to improve its

properties. Alloy steels are harder, stronger, and more corrosion resistant and contain other properties of the bonded elements.

Tool Steel

These steels are highly heat resistant and durable making them perfect tools and drilling equipment. They can be classified by their shapes into:

Long/ tubular products – like bars, rods and pipes

Flat products - like plates, sheets and strips

Other products – like valves, flanges and fittings.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steels contain 10 – 20% chromium and are highly corrosion resistant. They can be classified into

Austenitic – non-magnetic and non-heat treatable (kitchen equipment)

Ferritic – magnetic but cannot be treated with heat.

Martensitic - Magnetic and heat treatable steels (cutting tools, surgical and dental equipment)
