Access to Higher Education courses are a Level 3 programme of study and are designed to prepare adult students for study at university. They are aimed at people who would like to study at degree-level but who left school without the usual qualifications, such as A-Levels. Many Access students go on to succeed at university and beyond, with a large number of students pursuing new careers in a variety of directions.
Please note that many universities require GCSE English and Maths. In particular, Midwifery is a highly competitive area and GCSEs in English and Maths will be looked upon favourably if you are considering pursuing a career in this field.
For those students who do not have GCSEs in English and Maths or are not ready for this course, Entry to Access courses are available.

Want to study a degree buthaven’t got the qualifications?
Louise LibertiniAccess to Professions in Business Management
“I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do when I left college but after five years of working in retail, I made the decision to go back into education and expand my career choices.
The Access courses help to get people used to writing academically again and get used to exams, Harvard referencing and assignments. I’d really recommend the course to anyone who is thinking about getting back
into education.”
Rachel EntwistleAccess to Professions in Computing
“After always enjoying IT, I decided this was what I wanted to do as a career. In order to progress within the sector I knew I would need to get more qualifications but I didn’t have a great experience previously with education. However, the standard of teaching on the course was amazing – I can’t rave about it enough. The tutors invest in students and are passionate about what they teach.”

Teaching and Learning
ExcellenceThe College is recognised for
excellence in teaching and learning at all levels of study. One of the key benefits of these
courses are that they offer good contact hours with your tutors and small class
sizes. This means tutors are in a great position to support you in
achieving your full potential.
Competitive Fees and
Flexible PaymentTuition fees are lower than
universities which will help you manage the cost. For those opting to pay
their fees directly, rather than take out a loan, we offer
instalment plans.
We Offer Courses which will Boost your
Employment ProspectsAll of our HE courses are clearly linked to employment opportunities. You will take
part in activities that will boost your CV or professional portfolio, such
as work placements, attending events, trips and visits.
You can choose how long you want
to Study forThe College offers intermediate HE
courses such as Foundation Degrees and HNCs. These courses are perfect for those who are not sure whether they want to commit to a
full three or four year degree programme. Once you have completed your
Foundation Degree or HNC you can opt to top up your qualification (e.g. to a full honours degree
or HND).
Specialist Facilities
Our courses are offered at several of our centres, each with specialist facilities for the
programmes on offer. Many of our courses are taught at our new FutureSkills Centre, located in
MediaCityUK.
Mollie MansellMedia Make-Up for Fashion Foundation Degree
“I am from Wolverhampton but I moved for the course because it’s unique - nowhere else in the country offers this specific course and it’s in the perfect location close to MediaCityUK. The teaching is from professional staff who have worked and been successful in industry, so it’s amazing to have their first-hand experience and knowledge, and they have good links so we get the best guest speakers and guru advice.I am also a HE Ambassador and support the College at many events which has helped enhance my CV.”
Rory SlaterBusiness and Financial Management
Foundation Degree“Having not gone to university straight after my A-Levels, Salford City College stood out for me because it is university work but in a smaller environment which is more like a community. The class sizes aren’t as large, which means it’s more personal and you get more support. We also get to use the facilities of both
the College and University of Salford.”
Dan Heywood Graphic Design Foundation Degree
“I studied at the Pendleton Centre and did my BTEC in Graphic Design. I enjoyed studying at the College so much that I decided I would stay on to do my Foundation Degree. I really enjoyed working with the tutors and learnt so much from them. As there were only around 15 of us, we had a lot of one to one support and we were a very close knit group.
I studied in the new FdA Graphic Design studio at the Pendleton Centre. This is a specialist facility for HE Graphic Design students only.”

Fee Information16–18 Year Old Students Students who are/will be 16, 17 or 18 on the 31 August in the calendar year when they begin a programme of study, will NOT pay tuition fees, examination board registration fees or examination fees for courses that are Level 3 and below. This wider age definition ensures that the funding eligibility of a 16–18 year old students does not change during an individual’s programme if they become 19.
Where clothing or equipment is necessary for the student’s health or safety, a charge may be made for clothing and equipment that the student retains, but only if the student also has the option of borrowing the clothing or equipment free of charge. A full set of charging rules in relation to 16-18 year old students can be found in the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) funding guidance for young people 2017 to 2018 - www.gov.uk.
Employer Sponsors If your employer accepts responsibility for payment of your fees and wishes to pay upon receipt of an invoice from the College, we will require an official purchase order. Without a purchase order the student will be liable for the payment of any outstanding fees at the point of enrolment.
If an employer has less than 50 employees they may be eligible to pay by instalments.
Advanced Learner Loan Advanced Learner Loans are available for some courses to students who are aged 19+ and can be applied for via Student Finance England (SFE). To check eligibility visit www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan/eligibility.
Students are expected to apply for the loan before enrolment and have their Customer Reference Number (CRN) which will be recorded on the College system. It is the students’ responsibility to ensure that the loan is at an approved status via their unique log in to the Student Finance England portal. If the loan is not approved then the student will be liable and invoiced for the tuition fees. For more details visit www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan.
Adult Students Adult students eligible for fee remission are defined as those who are aged 19+ at the start of the programme of study on a qualification(s) which is eligible to draw down funding from Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA). Students may be fully funded (no fees payable by the student), or co-funded – where the student pays a tuition fee as detailed above, but also draws down the equivalent of 50% of the funding from ESFA.
The level of government contribution we will fund is as follows:
