Rules are important. Rules help create structure, maintain order and keep us safe and secure. But sometimes, rules need to be flexible and bend. We met with a young lady who was recently released from jail. She was expecting to reunite with the man she had been living with for the last several years, however, he wasn't there to pick her up upon her release -- nor was he living in their place of residence. He had moved out of town two months prior, taking all their combined possessions with him, all-the-while, keeping up the charade of being there for her upon her release. She was blind-sided. Shocked, heartbroken and frankly, scared-to-death, she wondered where she would live. She had no money, no job, and no family to turn to. She was a broken down, defeated human being. We decided to move aside certain rules of ours here at Helping Hands and opened up our arms to her. We paid for emergency shelter, gave her some clothes and food and referred her to several agencies in town that deal with long term care. Looking at this lost child of God and seeing her pain, our hearts went out to her. It was difficult to not keep to the rules, though. These rules have kept our organization safe from a lot of frustration, abuse and chaos in the past. Do we dare break them now? The Holy Spirit quickly brought to our minds the passage in James where it talks about seeing a brother or sister without clothing or food. Will you say "Go in peace, be warmed and filled" instead of giving them what they truly need? Sometimes, compassion says move those rules aside and meet the immediate need right in front of you, right here, right now. It wasn't much we gave her in the physical sense, but based on the spine crushing hugs she gave us before she left it was an enormous emotional blessing. We gave her hope. Such is the beauty of our organization. We can, through your faithful donations, extend our hands in kindness to meet the needs of those around us whenever and however the Lord leads. Please keep this young lady in your prayers. God bless you.
