Jesus Remember Me: Called to the Kingdom of Mercy
Parish Social Mission Week: Nov. 18—24
What sort of King is this? What sort of Kingdom? Our parish social mission weekend theme, “Jesus Re-member Me: Called to the Kingdom of Mercy” is in-spired by the story of Jesus’ execution and the mercy he showed to the criminal executed with him. We might find it odd that the Church should choose this story of the execution of Jesus as the Gospel reading for Christ the King. The second reading from the Letter to the Colossians seems more appropriate. In this reading St. Paul reminds us that Jesus is the firstborn of all creation; that thrones, dominions, prin-cipalities and powers were created for him. But in the Gospel from Luke we are given the image of Jesus as the condemned criminal executed by the political authorities in collaboration with the religious leaders of the Jewish people. How does this exempli-fy his kingly nature? What makes this story kingly is the fact that, as Jesus suffered his torturous execution, he still was willing to offer mercy to a fellow criminal. This man was not innocent like Jesus, he admitted his guilt; but as he hung on his cross he begged Jesus to remember him when he entered into his kingdom and Jesus granted his dying wish. This show of mercy is one of the characteristics that exemplify the Kingly nature of Jesus. It is also one of the primary characteristics of the Kingdom of God announced by Jesus. When he taught his disciples how to pray, Jesus included the concept of mercy as both a reward of the Kingdom and a condition for in-clusion into the Kingdom. “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” One of the greatest challenges to embracing this all-encompassing mercy is the death row inmate. We all have preconceived notions about those condemned to death and it is easy for death penalty advocates to give examples of hideous crimes and even more hide-ous murderers who are beyond the pale of human
compassion. But the death penalty does not speak to the character or humanity of the executed; it speaks to the character and humanity of the executioners. Every execution is done in the name of the residents of that state; or in the case of the federal death penalty, it is done in the name of the entire nation. Thanks to everyone who signed postcards after Mass this weekend urging the Trump Administra-tion Department of Justice to continue the morato-rium on federal executions. (Recently the Depart-ment of Justice announced that it would resume executing prisoners for the first time in nearly 20 years.)

God loves things by becoming them. This is the Christmas miracle, and this is what we Christians call incarnation. It began 13.8 billion years ago with a singularity and massive explosion we refer to as the Big Bang. It reached a complete expression 2,000 years ago when God fully became human in the person of Jesus. Today, God continues to become what God loves, and that includes you as part of the Christmas miracle.
Join us for three weeks this Advent for a prayer experience that will take us deep into the Christmas miracle of incarnation as it links the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius with the theology of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. This experience will include three evenings of teaching and faith sharing, a daily prayer practice and two meetings with a spiritual director.
For those wishing to participate in Spiritual Direction the fee is $75.00.
For those attending the Monday night sessions only, the fee is $50.00
Checks can be made out to St. Margaret Mary.
To register, please call the Parish Office (630-369-0777) or email: Loretta@smmp.com.
Registration deadline is November 25th.
Monday night sessions will be held in the Upper Room.

Reflection on Lectionary Readings Feast of Christ the King, November 24, 2019
What does it mean to be saved?
Today we celebrate the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (previously known as the Feast of Christ the King.) The Church gives us the story of Jesus’ execution on the cross as a meditation for this feast day. Clearly the Church wants us to un-derstand that Jesus is not like the kings of this world. In this Gospel reading from Luke the rulers sneer at Jesus saying, “He saved others, let him save himself.” The Roman soldiers join in saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself.” Final-ly, those condemned to die with him cry out, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us.” Jesus is mocked on three different levels. The religious leaders attack his claim as savior; one who rescues others. The Romans attack his claim to kingship; one who wields power and has authority. The condemned challenge his claim to messiahship: one who will restore the glory of Israel. Jesus has come to save, but not in the way that the religious lead-ers, the soldiers of the empire or the victims of the empire readily understand. The Gospel teaches us that to be saved is not to es-cape the pain and suffering of life; nor does it allow us to escape the consequences of our actions or inaction. To be “saved” is to have access to the power of the Holy Spirit which gives us the courage and grace to transform the darkness in our world into light; it gives us the strength to transform suffering into grace and death into new life. Embracing God’s Kingdom is not about pie-in-the-sky-by and by. It is about becoming an agent of transformation in the way we embrace the Kingdom principles on earth as they are in heaven. It means giving of ourselves and our treasure without the desire for repayment. It means loving where others hate, even at personal cost. It means embracing the call to welcome all unconditionally in a world that encourages us to divide ourselves into tribes and to fear those who are different.

Tony Dosen , Christine Grano Fee: $225 with bus; $200 provide own transportation Registration deadline: January 20, 2020 (Call 630-369-0777) Can Prayer be as simple as engaging our memory? For St. Ignatius, it is not only that simple, but remembering is essential for meeting God in the details of our life’s journey. God comes to us disguised as our very life, and the act of prayerful remembering not only recasts our own story within the context of God’s love and care, it can create a future full of purpose and hope. Please join us, This retreat will be repeated for men March 13-15, 2020

Fr. Paul’s Homily
Hope and Our Stewardship Mal 3:19-20a 2 Thes 3:7-12; Lk 21:5-19
(We are the trusted stewards, referred to in various parables, to whom God has entrusted his wealth, and he expects us to share it with those in need.)
11
Today’s gospel reading is a pretty fair description of the mindset in the early Church, the mindset of the first Christians and Jesus himself. On the one hand, things look dire; on the other hand, not to worry, be sober, serene, peaceful, and all shall be well. Holding these two opposites together was one of the first challenges that Jesus handed to his followers. What is being described here is the virtue of hope, which St. Paul calls “the first fruit given to those who believe.”
Now hope along with faith and love are the three essential qualities of God that we share in and through Christ. Of the three, we speak least about hope. We talk all the time about faith. We talk all the time about love. We don’t talk enough about hope. But our world needs hope now perhaps more than ever. Why would a 16-year-old go on a murderous, suicidal rampage on his birthday? Certainly psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, and his own peers will all
contribute their own opinions. But what may go overlooked is the most basic fact: he had no hope! People with hope do not behave that way. But we need hope to keep going amid all the fears and frustrations of life, or we just give up. And this has always been true, but now in our society the sense of the sacred, the sense of the transcendent from where hope comes is increasingly being pushed out of society, creating an enormous vacuum.
The eruptions of senseless violence are important wake-up calls for the whole of society. Many, especially the young, are dying inside. Every act of berserk violence is preceded by an inside death, the death of someone in his or her own heart. And the rest of us have to wake up and see those around us who are suffering, because we really do have the remedy: faith in the God who has come to us in our very flesh to bear our lives and burdens with us. That is our faith in Christ. God brings us not only hope for the age to come,
which is very important, but even in the present moment the fullness of love and compassion. That we do not have to wait for. That we do not have to hope for. It’s being given always.
Every time we gather for the Eucharist, God is renewing for us the covenant in Christ’s blood. Every time we come to the altar to receive the body and blood of Christ, God is feeding us, strengthening us for this treacherous journey through life. But the gifts of God are not just given to us personally or even to us as a community, they are intended for the whole world. And the only way the whole world will receive them is if we share them. We are the trusted stewards, referred to in various parables, to whom God has entrusted his wealth, and he expects us to share it with those in need. And the whole world is in need of the wealth of God. Salvation is not only about life eternal in the age to come, it is, but not only; it is also about saving 16-year-olds from themselves.
November 22, we celebrated Father Paul’s 44th anniversary of ordination. The banner portrays the Scripture quote from Isaiah 61:1-2 and Luke 4:18-19 that he chose for the theme of his ministry. “The spirit of the Lord is upon me because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the lowly, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.”
2019
40th Anniversary of Founding of St. Margaret Mary In June of 1980, St. Margaret Mary was officially founded. Next year will be our 40th Anniversary and we’d like to celebrate the parish, its history, its present and its future during the 2020 calendar year. If you’d like to be part of the planning for the events taking place during 2020, please contact Deacon Ken Miles through the parish office at 630.369.0777. We will be setting up meetings in December and January to begin the planning process.
