The Year of 2019
We know a Greek god Janus has two
heads. With one head he looks at the past
year and with another head he looks for-
ward to the coming year.
We are in the first month of 2019 and re-
flect on our assessment of 2018 and revise
it. As if we look at the mirror each morning for various purpos-
es, we need to look at us through the divine and mundane
mirror.
We regret losing our beloved and dedicated members in
the last year and we bless them to belong to another church
community to be loved by the new congregation. Also we
welcome all of our members of St James United Methodist
Church.
We will start the first Sunday with church vision statement
by each committee and end it with the Holy Communion.
With it we will pray for us to commune with the living and
loving Jesus and we will also pray for St James to commune
with Generation of Champion Congregation. Communion
with invisible deity and visible living beings.
Will gaining another year be called new! Something new
can come when people search diligently and honestly like
the Magi in Matthew. They saw the star and wondered many
nights and then left for a journey. Their journey seems not suc-
cessful in Jerusalem, but they didn’t follow the guidance of
Herod, but that of the living God.
Finally they met the new-born king and returned safely to
home. The magic spirit, if any, can make a repeating year
new.
I hesitate to make 2019 be new or the same as the last
many years. Will I take it the year of preparation for retire-
ment or the great year of renewal and re-birth?

Finance Request
The finance committee is need of
either a CPA, or a committee of indi-
viduals who are willing to do the
church audit. The audit is required by the confer-
ence, and is part of a checks and balances sys-
tem. By rule, according to the book of discipline,
this cannot be a member of the finance commit-
tee, the treasurer, financial secretary or the chair.
The member who has generously done this for St
James for many years, Deb Joseph’s, can no
longer do it. Again, we would like to thank Deb for
her years of doing this for St James at no cost to
us.
If you are interested and have some background
in finances or audits, please contact Christ Bahr at
chrisbahr2@gmail.com
Epiphany
In his book Awed to Heaven, Rooted in Earth (Fortress
Press), Walter Brueggemann writes in an Epiphany po-
em:
... this is a time to be born.
So we turn to you, God of our life
God of all our years,
God of our beginning....
We dare pray that you will do for us
and among us and through us
what is needful for our newness.
Give us the power to be receptive,
to take the newness you give ....
There is a time to be born, and it is now.
We sense the pangs and groans of your newness.
Come here now in the name of Jesus. Amen.
How fitting that the Epiphany season and the new
year coincide! Epiphany reveals a new King, the be-
ginning of his ministry, his new disciples, his first healings,
his “new teaching - with authority” (Mark 1:27). We,
too, experience newness, now
and year-round. But newness can
be tough. So we trust that God,
who “[makes] all things new”
while banishing “mourning and
crying and pain” (Rev. 21:4-5),
walks with us in this new year —
and always.

Are you looking for a gift for someone
who seems to have everything? Consider
the gift that keeps on giving, a weekend
with God.
The Walk to Emmaus is an experience of
Christian spiritual renewal and for-
mation.
It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ
in a new way as God’s grace and love is
revealed to you through other believers. It
begins with a 3-day short course in
Christianity. Christ will meet you where
you are, no matter where you are on your
Christian journey.

fice by clinking on the link or call 734-5371.

We are in need of people to
help serve a meal every
even numbered month on
the second Saturday from 4-
7 p.m. If you can assist, contact Paul and Deb
Countney or the church office. The next date that
we need help is February 9th.
The Joy Continues!
The “Joy Conference” will be held on Saturday,
February 2, 2019 form 8:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. The
event will be held at Fox Valley Lutheran High
School in Appleton. This year we welcome speak-
ers, Gaye Lindfors, Annie Meehan and Lanelle Va-
sichek. Please share with your family and friends –
and save the date for the 44th annual Confer-
ence. Registration will open December 14th. For
more information please call Outagamie County
UW—Extension at 920-832-4763.
Personal note: I have attended this event
the past few years and was very happy to
hear that it would be continuing this com-
ing year. It is a great way to get some “me”
time for women and have some very good
laughs while I do. I highly recommend it.
There is a minimal cost for this event, but
well worth it. I will give you more details
as they become available. ~Deb~
The 2019 revitalization project will be painting
the little kids and big kids classrooms. More
information will be coming including a fund-
raiser breakfast for this project.

murals. The little kids room mural will be...
“Jesus Loves the Little Children”
And the big kids room murals will be stories of
the Bible for more information see Wendy if
interested in helping.
Thank you!

Hand Vacuum Needed
Our Janitor is looking for a small vacu-
um cleaner that will clean the pew
cushions, as well the floor between the
pews, which is sometimes tricky with a
full size vacuum cleaner. If you have something that
fits this description, that you no longer use, and
would like to donate it to St James, please contact
either Bill Kraemer or Mike Shepard.
Thank you!
