St. Francis of Assisi School Newsletter
11th June, 2019 Newsletter No. 18
Dear Parents,
FIRST EUCHARIST The celebration of the Sacraments, Reconciliation,
Eucharist and Confirmation have always been a major
highlight in each families’ path of nurturing their child’s
faith and participation in the Catholic Church. Yet what
must not be forgotten is the core component, the Mass,
as it is within this celebration that our Sacraments are
generally received and acknowledged by the wider
parish community. It generates for many parents and
older siblings, happy memories of the major steps they
took in their faith formation.
Hopefully the sacramental celebrations we share this term will bring back many
happy memories of special celebrations of the Mass, which you can share with
your child. May it also bring about a time of reflection and renewed commitment to
continue to lead by example of what it means to celebrate being a Catholic.
I pray that all our Year 3 students have a very memorable experience celebrating
their First Eucharist over the coming weeks. Through the joint efforts of both
parents and teachers the children continue to prepare for the Sacrament. Please
pray for our children in Year 3 as they make their First Holy Communion. First Holy Eucharist

OVAL OPENING AND NEW TIMETABLE It has finally happened! There was great joy for all when Fr Anthony announced the new oval officially open for
playing. As we now have all areas open, we are hoping to trial one play and lunch break for the whole school.
Please do not worry about overcrowding as each year level still have designated areas to play. Please see
timetable on the following page for new learning / eating / playing times.
We have: Soccer Pitches Basketball / Netball Courts
Football Oval Bat tennis courts
Four Square court Multiple Basketball Towers (just for shooting hoops!)
Children in Years 1 – 6 are encouraged to bring their own sports equipment to leave at school. Please ensure
that all sports equipment brought to school is clearly labelled with your child’s name.
I encourage children to bring junior sized footballs / soccer balls so that if children are hit by a ball the injury will
hopefully be minimal. I also encourage children to leave their sports balls at school for safety reasons during drop
off and pick up times (we don’t want children bouncing balls as they try to cross roads!)
PLEASE NOTE: - The drop off / pick up road around the new oval will not be available until Term 3.

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING PRACTICES AT SFOA
On Tuesday 25th June the children will bring home their June Report. There are TWO parts to the Report, they
include: The Summary Report and Learning Assessment Journal.
PART ONE: LEARNING ASSESSMENT JOURNAL
Some of the features of the Learning Assessment Journal include:
1. Student work samples that have been corrected and/or annotated.
2. Criteria to provide feedback to students and parents about meeting the
expectations of a particular task.
3. Goal setting, self reflections and self assessments that highlight the student
taking ownership and setting direction for their learning.
PART TWO: SUMMARY REPORT The summary report has been modified to meet the feedback we received from staff and parents. It is more
graphical in representation and complements the Learning Assessment Journal. Some of the features of the
school report include:
Growth Summary Report
Previously known as the dot point page. This page demonstrates your child’s progression in
the areas of English, Mathematics and Personal and Social Capability. All other learning areas
will be displayed in Semester Two in line with new reporting guidelines. The work samples in
the Learning Assessment Journal will provide additional information and feedback to support
this page. Please note: Prep students will receive growth summary page in the December
report.
Religious Education
The Religious Education report will include an overview about the understandings and skills
that have been a focus for learning in Semester One, Learning Intentions and a Five Point
Achievement Scale. It will indicate your child’s level of achievement against the learning
intentions.
Integrated Inquiry
The Integrated Inquiry report will include an overview about the understandings and skills
that have been a focus for learning in Semester One. It includes Learning Intentions from
areas of Victorian Curriculum that have been a focus this Semester. This may include:
History, Geography, Science, and/or Learning Capabilities. This section of the report also
includes a Five Point Achievement Scale. It will indicate your child’s level of achievement
against the learning intentions.
Learning and Teaching
Student Comment Page This page is personalised and highlights what your child has
learnt in English and Mathematics. Future learning goals are also stated.
Class Comment This paragraph is personalised and highlights skills, and dispositions
that your child has developed through a variety of learning experiences. Parents
receive feedback about their child’s ability to manage their own learning and their
ability to work with others.
Days Absent The amount of days your child has been absent from school in Semester
One 2019.
Extra Curriculum page provides parents with feedback about their child’s progression
during specialist subjects. Each area includes Learning Intentions and a Five Point
Achievement Scale. It will indicate your child’s level of achievement against the
learning intentions. The areas include: Physical Education (P-6), Italian (P-6), Japanese
(5/6 only), Art (P-4), Drama (P-4) Music (P-6), Library (P-4), Computers (Prep-2) Science
(3/4) and Selected Passion Projects (5/6).
TIPS FOR READING YOUR CHILD’S REPORT AND LEARNING ASSESSMENT
JOURNAL
Focus on strengths. Do you look for strengths or weaknesses first? The challenge is to focus on strengths and
areas of progress with your child.
Take into account your child’s effort and attitude to learning. If the report indicates that effort is an area of
concern, then you have something to work on. If your child is putting in the required effort, then you cannot ask
any more than that, regardless of the grading.
Broaden your focus away from academic performance to form a picture of your child’s progress as a member of a
social setting. How your child gets along with his or her peers will influence his happiness and well-being, as well
as give an indicator to his future. The skills of independence and co-operation are highly valued by employers so
don’t dismiss these as unimportant.
Take note of student self assessment. Kids are generally very honest and will give a realistic assessment of their
progress. They are generally very perceptive so take note of their opinions.
Discuss the report with your son or daughter talking about strengths first before looking at areas that need
improvement. Ask for their opinion about how they performed and discuss their concerns.

CAPTURED! An editorial that captures passionate

Learning!
The Third Teacher-
The Power of Bump It Up Walls
The Third Teacher is the classroom environment. This includes the way teachers strategically place
resources and displays in order to support and aid the learning for our students. This new practice
emerged from professional learning we received from Dr Lyn Sharratt. She challenged us to provide
examples of what success looks like and to demonstrate this to the students. Lyn refers to this as Bump It
Up Walls. In the last few weeks I have captured some Bump it Up Walls and observed students using
them to provide feedback and make improvements about their writing.
Below are some captured moments of Year 2 students using Bump It Up Walls to improve their writing.
I wonder who will be captured NEXT?

Eucharist- A visible sign of God’s invisible grace. When reflecting on the sacrament of Holy Eucharist we are reminded that Sacraments are gifts of God’s
unconditional love which we are freely invited to receive. The unconditional gift of Christ’s own body and blood in
Holy Eucharist is a gift which both unites and nourishes us as members of the Catholic family and draws us into
a spirit of thanksgiving. The reception of sacrament allows us to reflect on the blessings of our lives and publicly
offer our thanks to God. This week we keep in our prayers the students from 3D, 3M and 3N as well as
additional senior students who will join our Year Three classes to receive Holy Eucharist for the first time this
weekend. We also look forward to the following weekend when the students from Years 3P, 3R and 3A will also
receive the body of Christ in the Holy Eucharist for the first time. The First Eucharist ceremonies are a beautiful
reminder of the importance of gathering as an entire faith community to be united with, and nourished by Christ.
It is wonderful to observe the genuine excitement and joy in the hearts of the children and their families at this
time of the year as they prepare for these most sacred celebrations. I would like to take this opportunity to thank
all parents, staff and students for the way they have undertaken and contributed to our preparatory activities
conducted throughout the term. The students have prepared well for their special day and are looking forward to
the opportunity of regularly partaking in this life-giving meal in the years ahead.
I would also like to extend a special thankyou to all members of school and parish choirs for their wonderful
support over our six masses. Their continued support of our sacramental program ensures all celebrations are
both moving and memorable. A final reminder letter will be distributed to families this week as we approach the
first of our six sacramental celebrations.
A reminder of the dates of our upcoming First Holy Eucharist celebrations are listed below:
Saturday 15th June at 11.30 am -3D
Sunday 16th June at 1 pm- 3M
Saturday 16th June at 3 pm- 3N
Saturday 22nd June at 11.30 am -3P
Sunday 23rd June at 1 pm- 3R
Saturday 23rd June at 3 pm- 3A
Parents are reminded that all students are required to be at the school hall one hour prior to the ceremony
beginning to allow photos to be taken. Each candidate is asked to be wearing their white stole they received
when they received their first Reconciliation or at their Baptism.
Alive in the Spirit- Year 6 Confirmation As Term Two is drawing to a close, we begin to set our sights on the next sacramental celebration scheduled for
2019. Confirmation for our Year Six students will be celebrated on Friday, 6th September at 7 pm and on
Sunday, 8th September at 1 pm and again at 3 pm. All ceremonies will be held in our parish church and promise
to be another beautiful way to celebrate our sacramental relationship with Christ.
To initiate our formal preparation program, Year Six students and their parents will gather in the school hall on
Tuesday, 23rd July at 7 pm for a Confirmation Reflection evening. During the evening the students and their
parents will have the opportunity to reflect upon the richness of this transformative sacrament and the
significance it has to our daily lives. The evening will be facilitated by Maria Forde who also recently led an
evening for our Year Three families on the sacrament of Eucharist. Maria is an engaging speaker, singer and
songwriter. She has toured internationally with her music and has had many years of experience leading families
to a deeper understanding of the Sacraments. The evening promises to be a rich opportunity for families to
reflect upon and strengthen their understanding of Confirmation and we ask all students to attend with at least
one parent/carer. During the evening parents and their children will have the opportunity to consider their own
God-given gifts and evaluate how they use those gifts in the service of others.
An information pack containing important details and relevant materials related to our Confirmation program will
be sent home to families prior to the end of Term Two. Year Six students are reminded that when selecting a
sponsor for Confirmation, it is expected that the person chosen is over the age of 16 and is a baptised and
confirmed Catholic.
RE News
Social Justice News: St Vinnies Winter Appeal As we can tell by the chill in the air, we are entering into the coldest part of the year. It is during the winter
months that we respond to our Christian mission by turning our minds to those less fortunate than ourselves.
We remind parents that towards the end of the term, we will again be inviting teachers, students and families to
work in partnership with our local St Vincent de Paul conference to support those in need. We will be gathering to
celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart on Thursday, 27th June. Prep, Year 2 & Year 3 students will join
parishioners at the 9.15 am service with students in Years 1, 4 5 & 6 gathering at 12 noon.
At these liturgical celebrations we will offer our prayers for those who are living in challenging circumstances. We
will also extend our faith into action by making a financial contribution to support those in need. Instead of
inviting families to donate food items and household goods as a part of the annual winter appeal for St Vincent
de Paul, we have been asked instead to make a monetary donation to assist St Vincent de Paul in their life-giving
work. Students are invited to come to school in casual clothes on Thursday 26th June and each family is asked
to send in a gold coin donation that will be used to by our local St Vincent de Paul conference to bring warmth,
comfort and reassurance to those in need within our parish.
Time to Pray A Prayer for our First Communicants May you always know the peace of Jesus, be guided by the light of God’s love, And be enlivened by the joy of his life in you. Amen. John Dwyer

school proud.
Five students (pictured below) finished in the top 12 of their age group and will progress through to the Region

What is this retreat about?:
Jesus Christ reveals God to us in
a powerful way. Since Jesus was both fully human and
fully divine, he reveals the “face” of God to us in a
unique way. Jesus experienced the full range of human
emotion – joy, sadness, fear and even anger. This
retreat reflects on the numerous places in sacred
scripture where the face of Christ is described. All enquires to Carmel Walsh: 0432302672 or
