JURISDICTION OVER CONDEMNATION, 8:1-17

DOMINATION OVER CORRUPTION, 8:18-34

• When I look into my heart and perceive its infinite wickedness I think it's a pit deeper than Hell.

—Jonathan Edwards

• I cannot pray, but I sin; I cannot hear, or preach a sermon, but I sin; I cannot give an alms, or receive the sacrament, but I sin; no, I cannot so much as confess my sins, but my confessions are still aggravations of them. My repentance needs to be repented of, my tears need washing, and the very washing of my tears needs still to be washed over again with the blood of my Redeemer.

—John Berridge,

English revivalist, 1716-1793

POINT 7.

A Christian may deceive himself for a time, but he can't end up justifying himself.

THREE THINGS ABOUT SINNING

1. Paul admits he is accountable for his own actions (Rom 6)2. Paul admits he will reap from his actions (Gal 6)3. Paul admits he is not really committing the sins (Rom 7:17)

Point 8.

The most certain proof you are a Christian is a love for God and a simultaneous struggle with sin.

Point 9.

Perfection is not possible in this life, only perfecting warfare is.

Point 10.

Now that the soul has been cut-away from the flesh, the operation of the Bible in the life of the believer will progressively remove it from sight.

Seven Laws in the Book of Romans

1. The Law of Moses, 10:52. The Law as a Principle, 3:213. The Law of Faith, 3:274. The Law of the Husband, 7:25. The Law of Sin, 7:236. The Law of the Mind, 7:237. The Law of the Spirit, 8:2

THE THREE CROSSES OF “GETHSEMANE CHRISTIANITY”

1. The cross where Christ was crucified, Gal 3:12. The cross where you were crucified to the world, Gal 2:20; 5:243. The cross where the world was crucified to you, Gal 6:14

Thesis:

You cannot die to sin without living to a purpose.

• In the flesh—a lost person• After the flesh—a carnal Christian• After the spirit—a spiritual Christian• In the spirit—(1) your standing

(2) your state

Certain Distinctions

Definition:

A law is a principle that regulates usage.

Definition:

All Christians have imputed righteousness, but only spiritual Christians have imparted righteousness.

Point 1.

The only way you can fulfill the law with righteousness is by learning to walk according to the Spirit and not in the flesh.

Definition:

Walking in the Spirit means I no longer expect my flesh to stop doing fleshly things, but I depend on the Holy Spirit to empower me not to do what the flesh is desiring.

Point 2.

As long as you are resting on the Spirit, your power comes from the Spirit.

Point 3.

The only hope anyone has of thinking right about any issue is if they have conditioned their mind through the word of God.

Point 4.

Whenever you do not do right you are walking in the flesh, no matter what reason or excuse you may use.

Point 5.

The proof of life is an awakening to God and a sense of his tranquility.

Definition:

Condemnation means to be declared guilty and doomed to punishment.

Point 6.

If you are living apart from God’s fellowship, you cannot have the blessings of God’s life.

Verse 12—Conclusion

Retrogression• Verse 9—Spirit• Verse 10—Soul• Verse 11—Body

Progression• Verse 13—Body• Verse 14—Soul• Verse 15—Spirit

FOUR THINGS PROVE YOU ARE ADOPTED AS A CHILD

OF GOD1) You inherit something from God2) You inherit something with Christ3) You suffer as an adoptive child like Christ suffers as the true child4) You will be glorified with him

Point 7.

Christ came to earth once to be in sympathy with us; the goal of our suffering now is to place us in sympathy with him.

1. Sufferings are present, 18

—but we get glory!

2. We must wait, 19

—but manifestation will come!

3. Corruption still clings, 21

—but we have liberty!

Why the Spirit’s Witness Is Necessary

Point 8.

The only way you make it in the present is with a proper perspective on the future.

ADOPTION

1st Adoption, 15Rom 8:11—If the Spirit of him that

raised up Jesus from the dead

dwell in you…

(whereby we cry, Abba, Father)

2nd Adoption, 23…he that raised up

Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies

(to wit, redemption of our body)

Definition:

Hope in the Bible is something that is promised by the word of God; it is a certainty of something as yet unseen.

THREE GROANS IN ROMANS

1) The groan of creation (8:22)2) The groan of the Christian (8:23)3) The groan of the Spirit (8:26)

Point 9.

God chose to love you for no reason in yourself, but because of his sovereign choice.

Point 10.

If you buck conformity to Jesus Christ, then you never see God's purpose in your life.

THE ORDER OF SALVATION

1. God’s foreknowledge2. Predestination3. Calling4. Justification5. Glorification

WHAT SHALL WE SAY?

1) No opposition (31)2) No privation (32)3) No rejection (33)4) No condemnation (34)5) No separation (35)6) No retreat (37)7) No defeat (38)

Point 11.

You see how much God really loves you when you begin to see what he wants to do with your life.

Point 12.

The only way you gain confidence that the Spirit works is when you start walking.
