• WSDOT’s need for market and gas station property

• Legislature’s 2018 directive to WSDOT

WSDOT’s Montlake Market survey

• Jan. 30 - Feb. 14 online survey

• 1,729 responses

• Strong support for market, but diverse opinions on cost

• Many opposed to WSDOT using property for entire duration of SR 520 reconstruction

• High interest in how property is used after Montlake Project construction

Discussions with the

Community and Legislature

• WSDOT discussed Montlake Market with legislators:

Potential to avoid disturbance of building

Estimated $20 million cost to preserve market operations

Property’s contamination

• Legislators could not support added project costs, but wanted to address community’s interests

Legislature’s new directive

• New proviso in 2019-2021 transportation budget

• Directs WSDOT to:

Offer lease to Montlake Market until Jan. 1, 2020

Identify area on or near market property for temporary market orfood service to operate during construction

Sell market property after Montlake Project complete … 5 to 6 years sooner than previously planned

• Work to provide an area for a temporary market / food service during construction

Negotiate temporary lease with gas station

Negotiate Montlake Market lease to Jan. 1, 2020

Close gas station
