SPRING TERM 2016
Year 5 have started learning all about Ancient Greece. As part of our learning each class visited the
National Gallery in London. We were able to look first hand at a range of paintings, which introduced us to
different Gods and Goddesses and some of the stories behind famous Greek myths. We are especially
excited to find our more about Medusa! Thank you to all the parents who helped with the trips.
Year 5
To start our topic off in a different way
all of Year 4 went to the Museum of
London in Docklands to have an
inspiring talk about Tudor Explorers.
All the children had to decide who was
the most successful explorer and why.
Due to the trip we decided not to issue
any Home Learning last week.
However, we are back to normal this
week with both English and Maths being handed out on Friday
which will be due in next Wednesday.
This week we have been carrying out cognitive ability tests
(CATS) in year 4. These are sent away to be marked
externally. You will receive a copy of your child’s results later
on this term.
We are looking forward to starting our English book, Meercat Mail. To kick start the topic, we are being visited by meercats on Tuesday next week... Yes real ones!
Thank you to all those parents who have already contributed towards the cost of this activity. If you have not yet done so, we would be very grateful to receive a contribution of £3 via School Gateway. The children are also learning about extreme weather and we would appreciate if you could spend time discussing the different weather we are experiencing at the moment.
Year 3
Year 6 have had a busy start to the Spring Term. The children have coped well with the changes to their maths sets and have
shown a mature approach to the Reading and Maths intervention groups we have put in place which many of them attend.
During the first week of the term we were lucky to have a number of visitors in Year 6. Two Police Officers came in to speak about
crime and consequences. During the talk the children found out that at the age of 10 they are responsible for their own actions,
and were told about the importance of staying safe online and being sensible when using social media sites.
We also had a visitor from Bromley Council to speak to the children about road safety. This was especially relevant as an
increasing amount of pupils are now walking to and from school without an adult.
Our final visit was during an English lesson where we were debating the topic of graffiti. We were
fortunate to have Mr Kilgour, Councillor Payne and Mr Lancaster (a school parent) share their
opinions with us about graffiti. The children were able to ask questions and make notes and then
use this information to write some fantastic persuasive speeches.
Spellings
Spelling lists have been given out to the children this week. The set-up is slightly different to last term. The children will be given 3
sets of spellings each week. The first set contains up to 8 of the statutory spellings from the list suggested by the Government;
the second is the class focus for the week e.g. silent letters or homophones; and the third is a list of words that the children have
spelt incorrectly in their work. It will be the responsibility of the pupil to create this list and learn the words. The children will be
tested weekly on the statutory spelling list.

We are collecting used stamps to help the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. We eventually hope to sponsor a puppy who will be trained to provide assistance and bring independence, companionship and confidence to someone who is deaf.
Please give your used stamps to the office, or hand to your class teacher.

We now have 66% of parents registered on School Gateway, with 29% using the app. We hope you are finding the system convenient and easy to use. If you have not yet downloaded the app on your phone, why not give it a try? By using the app, it saves the school money as text messages sent this way are free. Please make sure you have allowed ‘push notifications’ if you are using the app, or you’ll miss our messages! If you would like some help registering on School Gateway and using the system or app, please contact Mrs Benstead in the office who will be happy to assist and give you a quick lesson!
