ARLINGTON, Texas - The United States Bowling
Congress Hall of Fame Committee has elected five
new members to the USBC Hall of Fame - two in
Outstanding USBC Performance, two in Meritorious
Service and one Pioneer.
Wheelchair bowler Al Uttecht of Anaheim, Calif.,
was elected in the Pioneer category, multiple-time
USBC Open Championships winners Lennie
Boresch Jr. of Kenosha, Wis., and Gary Daroszewski
of Franklin, Wis., were selected in the Outstanding
USBC Performance category and Joan Feinblum of
Santa Rosa, Calif., and the late Kerm Helmer of
Utica, N.Y., were honored for Meritorious Service.
The induction ceremony will take place April 26 at
the USBC Convention in Arlington and will include
those elected from the national Superior
Performance ballots. On the men's ballot are Tom
Baker, King, N.C.; Steve Cook, Granite Bay, Calif.;
Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla.; David Husted,
Milwaukie, Ore.; Amleto Monacelli, Barquisimeto,
Venezuela; and David Ozio, Beaumont, Texas. The
women's ballot has one name - Dede Davidson,
Buellton, Calif.
Uttecht, the first person chosen in the Pioneer cat-
egory since 2008, blazed a trail for wheelchair
bowlers everywhere and is regarded as the most
accomplished such bowler in the sport's history. He
was confined to a wheelchair after sustaining
injuries in Vietnam in 1970 and began bowling later
that same year.
He has won the American Wheelchair Bowling
Association Tournament of Champions 13 times, is a
12-time AWBA National Scratch champion and a
seven-time AWBA National All-Events champion.
"I am totally blown away at this honor, and I have
no words to describe how I feel," said Uttecht, who
was inducted into the AWBA Hall of Fame in 1985.
"This is from someone who when I was first asked to
join a bowling league, I said you cannot bowl from a
wheelchair."
A three-time winner at the USBC Open
Championships - all of which came with fellow
electee Daroszewski - Boresch also has won dozens
of local and state titles in Wisconsin. He won the
2000 Team All-Events title and the Team and Team
All-Events titles in 2009 at the Open
Championships.
"I'm very honored, but it took me by surprise a lit-
tle bit," said Boresch, who currently ranks fifth on
the lifetime average list at the Open Championships
with 215.43. "I thought I might have a chance to get
into the Hall of Fame one day, but you never think it
will happen. It's quite an honor, especially with my
teammate Gary going in as well."
In addition to the three Open Championships titles
with Boresch, Daroszewski also won Open titles
three other times. He won the 1982 Team All-Events,
1983 Team All-Events and 1989 Regular Doubles
with Gus Yannaras. He is a member of the Wisconsin
Bowling Association Hall of Fame and has been a
bowling center proprietor since 1982.
"I don't think any bowler ever steps foot in their
first tournament with the thought of making it into
the Hall of Fame, so this is an unbelievably, out-
standing thing to have happen to me," said
Daroszewski, who has bowled in the Open
Championships with Boresch since 1992. "It's really
overwhelming. It hasn't kicked in yet how big an
accomplishment this is."
Feinblum has devoted nearly five decades of serv-
ice to bowling at the national, state and local levels,
including four years of work on the committees and
task forces that helped develop USBC. She also
served on the Women's International Bowling
Congress Board of Directors for more than a decade
and most recently served as the chairperson of the
USBC Nominating Committee and the USBC Hall
of Fame Committee.
"I was shocked, and I thought maybe I was dream-
ing because I had just gotten out of bed when I got
the phone call with the news I had been selected,"
said Feinblum, who was recently featured in a seg-
ment on The Learning Channel focusing on how her
bowling family helped her in her battle with breast
cancer. "I just feel very humbled because having
been on the USBC Hall of Fame Committee, I know
how difficult it is to make it because of all the wor-
thy candidates."
A physical education teacher for more than 35
years, Helmer dedicated his life to the growth and
development of youth and collegiate bowling until
his passing in 2002.
He initiated the men's and women's bowling pro-
grams at Erie Community College in Buffalo, N.Y.,
and led the Kats to 16 National Junior College
Athletic Association men's titles and 21 women's
titles. His men's and women's teams each claimed a
pair of national titles as well.
Helmer was active in the bowling industry, serving
on the Board of Directors for the American Bowling
Congress and the Young American Bowling Alliance.
He served as YABA President from 1999-2001.

Why do people bowl?
Some people bowl because it is
their way to make a living.
Some people bowl to be with
their friends, mates or family.
Some people bowl to get away
from their friends, mates or fam-
ily.
Some people bowl because they
like being frustrated, bitter and
unhappy and bowling gives them
a little of each.
Some people bowl because they
like being satisfied and happy,
and Bowling gives them a little of
that.
Some people bowl just because
they were asked to bowl.
Some people bowl because it is
an inexpensive form of enter-
tainment.
Some people bowl because they
like to throw things.
Some people bowl because they
were lousy at every other sport
and figure bowling is an easy
game.
Some people bowl because they
were good in other sports and
figure when they can’t cut it in
football or baseball or other
sports bowling can still keep
them competitive.
Some old people bowl to stay
young.
Some young people bowl to
learn how to mature.
Some people bowl because they
like to talk.
Some people bowl because they
like to listen.
Some people bowl so they can
have something to brag or com-
plain about.
Some people bowl because they
have some excuses left over from
other life encounters they lost.
Some people bowl because they
found a bowling ball or pair of
shoes in the attic or cellar.
Some people bowl because it
gives them license to go out, have
a drink, wear outlandish clothes,
and yell a lot.
Some people bowl for exercise.
Some people bowl to get away
from the cares of work or home,
and then end up caring more
about home and work because of
the new cares bowling brings.
Some people bowl to make out.
Some people bowl because they
saw a pro on TV and figure they
can do better.
Some little people bowl
because their mothers and
fathers make them bowl.
Some people bowl because for
a tiny sum they can use million
dollar equipment.
Some people bowl to lose their
inhibitions and some people
bowl to put themselves on exhi-
bition.
Some people bowl because they
like to laugh and cry in no spe-
cial order.
Some people bowl because
bowling centers can be a home
away from home.
Some people bowl because they
want to win a trophy of some
sort, and almost every bowler
can win a trophy at one time or
another.
Some people bowl to lose
weight.
Some people bowl to throw
their weight around.
Some people bowl because it’s
one of the only things they can
do.
Some people bowl because it’s
the only thing they want to do.
But all people bowl because
they enjoy it, gain something
from it in some normal or pecu-
liar way, and because bowling is
truly the people’s pastime.
For years, the best-kept secret has been youth programs: scholarships,
high school and collegiate bowling, and simply media coverage of all our
wonderful young bowlers.
In North Jersey we have the Emma P. Hendrickson (http://www.mor-
riscountywba.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/scholarship_appli-
cation.pdf), and Charles A. Edwards (http://www.mcba-
njbowling.com/applications/ScholApplic.pdf) scholarships.
Additionally, there are many national scholarships available from the
PBA (the Billy Welu), the USBC (Chuck Hall and Alberta Crowe Stars
of Tomorrow), and BWAA (Chuck Pezzano). A simple Google search
will give you all the information, forms, and past winners.
Why bring up scholarships now? Because many deadlines for all appli-
cations start in February, and applications need recommendations from
teachers or guidance counselors, and often have essay requirements.
Montville High School wants a bowling program. For the life of me I
never understood why some schools didn’t support youth bowling. Their
games wouldn’t get rained out. The “little guy” could make the team
along with the “big guy.” The camaraderie is unparalleled compared with
other sports.
People often ask me about colleges with bowling programs. In addition
to the mega-bowling powerhouse, Wichita State, there are so many other
schools with strong bowling curricula such as New Jersey’s own
Fairleigh Dickinson, The College of New Jersey, New Jersey City, NJ
Institute ot Technology, Stevens Institute, Monmouth, and William
Paterson. Look up their contact people and scholarships at
www.bowl.com.
Did you know that Bill Wyer of Yale organized the first collegiate
bowling tournament held in New Haven, Conn., on April 8, 1916?

Edison, NJ – As part of a nation-
wide grant program, Veterans Day
was a little bit brighter at the
Veterans Home at Menlo Park,
where a check was accepted in the
amount of $2,535.00 from the
local members of the Bowlers to
Veterans Link (BVL). Part of
donations to the national BVL also
support the group “Re-Creation”
which is a song and dance group
and was there performing on the
same day.
The Monmouth County USBC
Bowlers collect donations at all
their sponsored tournaments by
asking each bowler to contribute
only $1.00. “Our bowlers have
been very generous in supporting
our efforts to aid the veterans,”
said Bob Hodges, President. The
veterans were also given a banner
with over one hundred signatures
from the bowlers of Monmouth
County who participated in the
fund-raiser.
BVL is a national charity, which
raises almost a million dollars
annually to fund recreation and
therapeutic programs and services
for America’s veterans. Founded
in 1942, the BVL is operated and
supported by league bowlers
throughout the United States.
The grant will be used to pur-
chase much needed supplies
and equipment for the facility.
Currently, the center serves
Central Jersey area veterans
who will benefit from and enjoy
the new equipment and pro-
grams. Joseph Brandspiegel,
CEO of the Menlo Park
Veterans Home, was thrilled to
receive such a generous dona-
tion, and invited the bowlers
group to come back more often.
The Bowlers of America,
through the BVL, recognize the
tremendous sacrifice that our
military veterans have made for
our country. Our bowlers are
committed to improving the
life for veterans. This gift to
the Menlo Park facility is just
part of our on-going effort to
boost the spirits of our veter-
ans, and show them we care. In
addition to the donations to the
VA Hospitals, BVL dollars sup-
port veterans in the State
Veterans Homes and at Vet
Centers around the country.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Team USA
member Liz Johnson enjoyed a
successful year on the internation-
al stage, and she was able to stay
sharp by competing in a United
States Bowling Congress Sport
Bowling league.
The 37-year-old right-hander,
who earlier this year helped
Team USA to its first team gold
medal at the World Tenpin
Bowling Association World
Women's Championships since
1987, captured the women's
2010-11 USBC Sport Bowling
National High Average Award.
She averaged 210 for 48 games
in the Beverly Sport League at
Beverly Lanes in Arlington
Heights, Ill.
John Donahue of Shawnee
Mission, Kan., topped the Adult
Male division with a 230 aver-
age for 72 games in the PBA
Experience league at Ward
Parkway Lanes, while Kyle
Sherman of O'Fallon, Mo., and
Denver's Emily Eckhoff led all
youth Sport bowlers with 205
and 196, respectively.
"It feels really good to have
the top average in the country
and receive this honor," said
Johnson, a seven-time member
of Team USA, who posted a
USBC women's record 244.4
average in a standard league
during the 2004-05 season. "The
bowling center is pretty tough
overall, and there are a lot of
great bowlers in the area who
also bowl in the league. It defi-
nitely helped keep me sharp for
all of the tournaments I bowl in,
and I'm very proud of this
accomplishment."
After finishing second at the
2011 USBC Team USA Trials,
Johnson went on to claim two
gold medals (team and doubles)
at the World Women's
Championships in Hong Kong
and also won singles and dou-
bles at the Pan American Games
in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Donahue, 52, started bowling
Sport leagues in 2007 with his
focus on preparing for top sen-
ior events.
"I needed to do preparation
work to bowl senior tourna-
ments like PBA and SASBA by
the time I turned 50," Donahue
said. "I determined that bowling
in PBA Experience leagues was
a good way to sharpen my
skills. Bowling in PBA
Experience leagues also has
helped me play lanes better with
both Sport and non-Sport lane
conditions."
Eckhoff and Sherman, both
17, said they decided to chal-
lenge themselves on Sport con-
ditions so they could be pre-
pared for top competition.
"For the love and dedication I
have for this sport, I am greatly
honored to have earned this
award," said Eckhoff, who start-
ed bowling in Sport leagues in
2006. "Being able to accomplish
an achievement that rarely
comes along means a lot to me."
Sherman was 13 when he
bowled in his first Sport league.
He made headlines in the sum-
mer of 2010 when he won the
JBC Gateway Scholarship
Tournament by rolling games of
300, 259, 300 and 289 in match
play.
"I wanted to improve my
game, and I knew I had to chal-
lenge myself on Sport shots in
order to compete with the top
competition," Sherman said. "I
feel so honored to have
achieved this award, and I real-
ize that practice and hard work
pay off."

AT ROCKVILLE CENTER
ARLINGTON, Texas - In two
major announcements, the United
States Bowling Congress has
selected 10 athletes to join Team
USA in 2012, while the winners of
the USBC Team USA Trials will
earn automatic spots to compete in
the QubicaAMF World Cup.
Five men and five women have
been selected to Team USA mem-
bers for 2012. The remainder of
the roster will be determined at the
Team USA Trials in Las Vegas
from Jan. 2-6.
Patrick Allen, Chris Barnes,
Tommy Jones, Bill O'Neill and
Sean Rash were selected to join
the men's team by the National
Selection Committee, while Liz
Johnson, Kelly Kulick, Stefanie
Nation, Shannon O'Keefe and
Shannon Pluhowsky were chosen
for the women's team.
"These decisions are never easy to
make because we have such a tal-
ented pool of players to choose
from," said Team USA head coach
Rod Ross, who chairs the selec-
tion committee. "Representing the
United States as a member of
Team USA is the highest honor an
athlete in our country can have,
and all of these players are worthy
of their selection."
To be considered at this stage for
selection to 2012 Team USA, men
were required to be exempt play-
ers on the PBA Tour, while the
women must have been former
Professional Women's Bowling
Association/Ladies Professional
Bowlers Tour members. Players
who were on Team USA at least
once since 2001 also were eligible
for consideration.
An additional five men and five
women will join Team USA 2012
at the Team USA Trials, which
will be held at Texas Station in Las
Vegas. The winners of that event
will represent the United States at
the prestigious QubicaAMF World
Cup in 2012.
"Earning a spot on Team USA is a
significant reason in itself to com-
pete in the Team USA Trials, but
we wanted to sweeten the victory
for our winners," USBC
Managing Director of National
Governing Body Neil Stremmel
said. "The World Cup has a
tremendous amount of tradition
and is one of our most anticipated
events each year."
The top three men and top three
women finishers at the Team USA
Trials will earn automatic spots on
Team USA, while the National
Selection Committee will pick two
additional men and two additional
women from the field to join the
team.
Team USA will represent the
United States in international
competition in 2012, including the
Pan American Bowling
Confederation Championships,
World Singles Championships and
the Lee Evans Tournament of the
Americas.
