SPIE-IISc Chapter report 2015-2016
About SPIE-IISc Chapter:
Since the inauguration of the SPIE-IISc chapter in August 2010, the chapter has been successful in
regularly conducting educational and technical talks and events by eminent speakers. In this report
the SPIE-IISc chapter activities for the current year, 2015 are presented.

The student strength is about 20 student members in IISc. We encourage students from
throughout the country to take part in our programs. We plan to enroll more students through
promotional events.

Chapter Activities:
To increase the involvement of the student members, we have a webpage for the Applied
Photonics Initiative, (API) IISc. https://sites.google.com/site/appliedphotonicsiisc/spie-chapter.
Also a facebook group as “Optics-Groups-IISc”
https://www.facebook.com/groups/spieosaiisc/ where all students working in the Optics and
Photonics related areas can coordinate and plan meetups etc. Updates on chapter events and other
activities are regularly posted online.
As per the previous report many activities in the areas of Bio-Photonics, Computational
Techniques in Photonics and Optics and Lasers in Engineering Applications were conducted.
Below are the activities conducted and co-ordinated by the SPIE-IISc student chapter.
The members of the chapter have actively contributed their time and effort in the organization and
functioning of these activities.

The speaker started his talk by introducing the EIT technology followed by discussion on
instrumentation, computation and phantom experimentations.
� 7 Feb 2015:
Invited lecture on “Tomographic Image Reconstruction”
Speaker: Dr. Jayaprakash; Helmholtz Zentrum Centre, Munich
Venue: MSRIT campus
The talk focussed on both traditional iterative reconstruction methods and statistical iterative
reconstruction techniques.
� 18 March 2015

Talk on “Fundamental research needs for future Solid State Lighting applications”

Outreach Activities:
� Optics Demo with Note Book Drive was arranged at Kendriya Vidyalaya school in IISc on
25th Jan 2015. Around 40 high school students attended the demonstrations.
� On February 28th, 2015, “Open Day” was organized where in students from local school
and colleges visit IISc. A lot of optics and photonics demonstrations were conducted to
invoke curiosity and encourage students to appreciate and understand the science behind
many common phenomena. In total around thousand students from different schools in and
around Bangalore attended.
� One Day Special Lecture Series Program “Recent Advances in Optical Technology” in
Association with IEEE Photonic Society Chapter, Bangalore Section on 27th April, 2015 at
University of Mysore
� Optics Demo at an event organized by Free Software Movement Karnataka (FSMK) at
Wilson garden, Bangalore on May 9th 2015. Around 40 students attended the
demonstrations.
� On 22nd June 2015, Prof T Srinivas (our chapter advisor) delivered public outreach talk on
“PHOTONICS- The alternative to electronics” at Visvesvaraya Industrial & Technological
Museum auditorium. Over 200 school students and 100 other participants attended the
event.
� On 24th
June 2015 a talk in Kannada language (local language of Bangalore) titled
“Introduction to Photonics: A talk in Kannada” was organized in CeNSE Auditorium, IISc
Bangalore to reach out to around 30 students and 40 technical persons who are not very
fluent in English. The speaker was Dr. Gopalkrishna of CeNSE, IISc.

Planned Activites
API is organizing WRAP-2015 Workshop on Recent Advances in Photonics with around 150
student participants from all over the world. Around 20 international speakers are participating.
SPIE Travel lecturer Dr. Radislav Potyralio is also giving a talk as part of this workshop.
We plan on three major workshops for the year 2016 on the following topics
1. Photovoltaics
2. Nanophotonics
3. Nonlinear Optics
This is mainly to benefit the student community and to increase membership growth. Monthly
technical talks are planned at various Educational Institutions as outreach activity. We also plan to
visit more schools and colleges to create awareness on optics and photonics and its impact on our
lives.

Technical talks are open to all.

Expenses usually shared with OSA and IEEE Chapters.
