WiththeendoftheSovietUnionin1991andChina’srestorationofcapitalism,itiseasytodismisstherelevancyofsocialismtoday.Yet,theJapaneseCommunistParty(JCP)hasenjoyedsuccessatthepollsandrecognitionasaseriousopponenttothegovernmentofAbeShinzō.TheJCPhoweverisnotmakingapushforpower.Instead,itsupportsliberaloppositionparties,mostrecentlythrowingitsweightbehindthenewConstitutionalDemocraticPartyofJapan(CDP)intheOctober2017generalelection.AfutureCDPgovernmentinJapancouldincludetheJCPasacoalitionpartner.DoesthismeantheJCPrepresentsathreattocapitalisminJapanandAsiamorebroadly?Theanswerisno.ThispaperexaminesthefoundationsoftheJCPinthewakeoftheRussianRevolutionin1917,itsevolutionalongStalinistlines,andwhyitsupportscapitalistpartiestoday.EarlyJapanesecommunistshadfailedtomakeaproperassessmentoftheinternationalprograminitiallyexpoundedbytheRussianBolsheviksin1917.ThismadeiteasierfortheJCPtofallundernationalistandStalinistinfluencesbythe1920s.DespitethegrowingroleoftheJCPinmodernpolitics,muchoftheexistingresearchonthepartycomesfromconservative,ColdWar-erahistorianswhoviewedtheJCPthroughthelensofanti-communism,acceptingitasagenuinelyrevolutionaryparty.Thispaperarguesratherthattheparty’smodern,andinfactpro-capitalist,positionscanbetracedbacktothisdegenerationunderStalinism.Sol-biKim/EwhaWomansUniversity CartelPartyinSouthKorea:Weakenedalignmentsinpartysystem
Thispaperisgoingtoanalyzefundamentalreasonofvariabilityofpartysystembyutilizingcartelpartymodel.ItmeansthatthepaperwillpresumealmostallpoliticalpartiesinSouthKoreaarefollowcartelpartymodelandthismodel’sprincipalcharacteristicsareincreasingfragmentationofpartysystem.Forgoingintodetailofthisphenomenon,thepapersetsitsfacetoanalyzecartelpartyastheframework.ThisisbecauseapplyingandlookingintodevelopmentofcartelpartymodelthatemergedfromKatzandMair’spaper,throughmasspartymodelandcatch-allpartymodel,SouthKorea,asoneofthelaterdemocratizedcountry,couldincludesignificantimplication.Forthisexamination,thispaperwillreflectMackie’sanalysisandmoreoverprospecttransitionofpartysysteminSouthKoreaaswellasEurope.Mackiepresentedpossibilitiesinhisthesisthatcartelpartymightmotivatesocialmovementsuchasleft-libertarianornewrightmovement,andevenstimulateestablishmentanddevelopmentof‘challenger’parties.Ifthemajorpoliticalpartiescouldnotperformtheirfunctionaschannelmentofcivilsociety’sexpression,people’spoliticaldissatisfactionwillgraduallyincreaseastheresultofpartysystem’smobility.Asmanyscholarscriticizedintheirthesis,thecriseordeclineofpartysystemsareabletogoforcartelpartiesthatcannotdotheircrucialresponsibility. IncontemporaryChina,anewpoliticalepochhasemerged--oneinwhichtheomnipresentshadowofreform-fatherDengXiaopingisnoweclipsedbyXiJinping’svisionsofaNeo-Confucian,“GreaterChina."
WherepreviouslyhegemonicideologiesofAmerican"democracypromotion"orSoviet-inspired,doctrinairecommunismsoughttotransformexternalpoliticalactors,Neo-Confucianismisdecidedlyaimedatinternalcentersofpoweranddiscourse.Thus,Neo-ConfucianismrepresentsanattempttoimposeahegemonicideologythatralliestheentirebodypoliticofChinesesociety.Thisprojectexplorestheconstitutiveagencyofideologyvis-a-vistostates’foreignpolicystrategies.Framingmaterialandideationalpowerrelationshipsasadialecticversussimplereductionistcompetition,itdepartsfromconventionalnotionsof“ideas”or“ideology”inanefforttoillustratethematerialcharacterandstructureofideologyitself.Inthisrespect,ideologyrepresentsmovingbeyondestablishednormstouncoverpatternsofhabituationandmaterialstructure.Hence,itre-conceptualizesideologyasthemannerinwhichideasbecomeorganizedandhowsuchorganizationsleadtopathdependencies(e.g.,howbordersareenforced,howmilitariesbecomestructured,etc.).Tothisend,theprojectconstructsanideologicalmapofNeo-Confucianismandexaminesthematerialmeansbywhichtheideologyismanifestingitselfanditssubsequentimplications.Additionally,itcomparestheideationalandmaterialstructureofXi-Jinping'sNeo-ConfucianismwithRussia'sNeo-Eurasianapproachtoideologicalrenewaltodemonstratethatoursupposed"post-ideological"worldisactuallyinthemidstofafiercestruggleforideologicalhegemony. Itiswidelyrecognizedthatallcultureshavebeliefsaboutwhenitisacceptabletogotowarandhowwarshouldbewaged.Whatismorehotlydebatediswhetherornotthesebeliefscanbeconsideredformalizedandconsistentjustwartheories,asopposedtoshiftingpoliticalrhetoricusedtojustifyindividualconflicts,inthemanneroftheEuropeantraditionsofjusadbellum(whenitisjustifiedtofight)andjusinbello(howonefightsinajustifiedmanner).Inthispaper,Iexaminethehistoriographyofthesediscussions,andcomparehowvariousAsiantraditionsofjustwarareexaminedandevaluatedincomparisontohowhistorianshavetreatedEuropeanjustwartheory,particularlythestandardssetforthinJamesThompson’s“HistoricalRootsofJustWarTraditioninWesternCulture”.Usingsuchastandard,itsoonbecomesclearthatAsianjustwartraditionsareoftenjudgedbydifferentstandardsthanEuropeanones,andarenotexaminedwiththesamelevelofcomplexityandnuance,presentinganoverlysimplifiedandstaticviewofthedevelopmentofjustwarideologyinAsia.WhilecomparativehistoryhasalreadydoneagreatdealinhelpingmodernscholarsunderstandAsianconceptionsofjustifiedwarfare,muchmorecanbedonetoimprovethatunderstandingwiththepropertechniquesandtoolsofhistoricizationandcontextualization."Panel1.2Nationalism&IdentityI

In2016,anewterm,called“LittlePink”,appearedincyberChina.LittlePinkisagroupofyoungInternetuserswhoshowstrongpatrioticenthusiasmandhighpassionofdefendingthecurrentregime.Attheendof2016,ThePublicOpinionMonitoringUnitofPeople’sDailyreleasedtheiranalyticalreportofthisgroupsayingthatLittlePinkisledbytheofficialWeiboaccountoftheCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistYouthLeague.Theymostlyappearduringnewsworthyonlineevents,suchastheOlympicGames;TsaiIng-wensteppingintopower;ZhaoWeicastingLeonDai,aTaiwaneseactorwhosupportTaiwanindependence;theSouthChinaSeaArbitration;andsoon.NationalisticmovementsarenotsomethingnewinChina.Whatmakesthisparticularnationalistgroupdifferent?IstheoccurrenceofLittlePinksporadic?Whoisgivingpermissionforthemassparticipationonline?Basedonasuccessionofinfluentialeventsthattheyhave

Thispaperfocusesonamuseumthatexhibits“negativehistory”inJapan.Therearecurrentlymorethanfivethousandsmuseumsinjapan.Amongthem,therearemanypeaceandwarmuseums.ButtherearefewexhibitionsofJapanesecolonialruleandWorldWarIIcrimes.TheexhibitionsofpeaceandwarmuseumshavemainlyshownthedamagetoJapan,whichwascausedbyairraidsandatomicbombsduringtheWorldWarII. However,afewexhibitsoftheJapaneseempireandtheWorldWarIIcrimesdealwithnegativehistorywhichisrelatedtopainfulconsequencesofJapanesecolonialruleoverAsiancountries.Thesemuseumsthatpresentnegativehistoryarerunbyeitherindividualornon-governmentalorganizations.Thus,notonlyisthesizeofthemuseumssmallbutalsothemuseumshavefinancialdifficulties. Inthispaper,IanalyzeTheHistoryMuseumofJ-KoreansinTokyoinwhichtheexhibitionpresentsthediscriminationandthemarginalizationexperiencedbyKoreansunderJapanesecolonialrule.TheHistoryMuseumofJ-Koreanswasestablishedin2005withthemissionoftransmittingthehistoryofZainichi(KoreansinJapan)tofuturegenerationsbycollecting,organizingandexhibitingmaterials.EventhoughtheZainichiKoreanhistoryreflectsthehistoryofbothJapanandKorea,ithasnotbeenacknowledged.IpointoutthatweneedtoteachtheexperiencesandthememoriesofthevictimsunderJapanesecolonialruletothenextgenerationinordertoimprovemutualunderstandingbetweenJapaneseandKoreans."RosiImron/SocialStudiesEducationDepartment,MaulanaMalikIbrahimStateIslamicUniversityofMalang SouthernThai-MuslimahStudents’CulturalIdentityintheirLearningActiviesinIndonesia
Culturalidentityisacurrentandcrucialissueinsociallifeparticularlyinthefieldofeducation.Byunderstandingthisculturalidentity,astudentwillbeabletofullyunderstandherselfandknowsherpositioninthesocietywhereshelivesin.Itisalsoexpectedthatstudentwillhaveabettertolerantattitudetowardothercultures.Intheeducationalworld,itisextremelyimportantnotonlyforthestudentstocomprehendtheirculturalidentitybutalsofortheteacherswhointeractwiththestudentswithdiversemulticulturalbackgrounds.Basedonthisurgency,itisthereforeneededforthemtobeabletodefinetheiridentitiesinordertoeasethepossibleproblemsandeasilyadaptinthe(new)educationalsystem. ThisresearchisaimedtoexploreThaiMuslimahstudent’sculturalidentityinMaulanaMalikIbrahimStateIslamicUniversity,theirformationprocessofnewidentitiestosupporttheirlearningprocesses,andexplainsupportingandbarrierfactorsaswellastheirsolutionintheirlearningactivities.Thisprojectisdesignedqualitatively.Thedataispresentedintheformofdescription,explanations,andpictures.Theprimaryresearchobjectsare3Thai-Muslimah(Female)studentswhileitskeyinstrumentistheresearcherhimself.Thetechniqueofcollectingdatausedbothinterviewanddocumentanalysis.Theresearcherusestriangulationtechniquetotestthevalidityofdatainordertodrawaproperconclusion. andresignation.WomeninKoreaareoftendescribedasmorehan-filledthanmenbecauseunequalstructureofthepatriarchalsystemoppressedwomenforsolong,furtheraggravatingtheirnegativefeelingsofhan.Paradoxically,however,hancanalsobetransformedintohopeandempowermenttoprovideameansofresolutionas“itisnotonlyasymptom,butadynamicprocesswithbothcoerciveandtransformativepotentialsforapoliticalimagination.”Inthispaper,Iarguethatthemeaningofhananditsrepresentationinthecreationofculturalproductsshiftaccordingtothesociopoliticalaswellashistoricalcontextanddemonstratehow“TheStatueofPeace”illustratessuchchanges.“TheStatueofPeace”isalsooftencalled"StatueofaGirl"or“ComfortWomanStatue”inKorean.Theterm,“Comfortwomen”referstothegirlsandwomenwhowereexploitedruthlesslybytheImperialJapaneseArmyassexualslavesduringtheJapanesecolonialperiod.IwillanalyzethesymbolismandaffectofthisstatuetoshowhowitreflectsthetransformationofamorepassiveandindividualhaninprivatespaceintopeacefulbutactiveandcollectiveresistanceinthestreetagainstviolentideologiessuchaspatriarchyaswellasJapaneseImperialism. LabormigrationhasbecomeintegraltotheFilipinoexperience.Sinceitsboominthe1970s,migrationasameanstoalleviatepovertyandprovideforthefamilyhasbecomeanarrativefamiliartomostFilipinoworkers.Thishascausedasignificant,ifnotundeniablyvisibleshiftinthedynamicsnotjustoflocaleconomy,butalsointhehome.Inthissense,labormigrationduetoincreasingglobalizationhasfurtherblurredlinesbetweenthepublicandprivatesphere.Althoughmigrationmaybeseenasaneffectofoutsidefactorsbothfromtheglobalandlocal,italsoaffectsthehouseholdsofmigrantworkers,particularlyintheirinteractionswithinthenuclearfamily.WhileplentyofliteraturehasalreadybeenwrittenontheeffectsofmigrationonthegenderdynamicsandfamilialresponsibilitieswithintheFilipinofamily,notmuchhasbeenspeculatedonhowthesedynamicsinturnfeedintomigrationpatterns.Thisisasignificantgapthatmustbeaddressedinformulatingthenuancesinthemigrantexperience. TheAsia-PacificWarhadavastsocialandpsychologicalimpactonJapanesewomen.Theyweretreatedasobjectsofgovernmentlabormobilizationschemes,andsoplayedacrucialroleinmines.In1939,theJapanesegovernmentalleviatedtheregulationoffemalelabortosolveaseriousshortageoflaborinmines.Atthesametime,childcarecentershavefunctionedasaninstrumenttomobilizefemalelaborsinmines.ThisresearchexaminestheHanaokamineinAkitaPrefecturewhichproducedmainlycopper,whichwasdesignatedasamunitionscompanyin1944.Thisminebuiltakindergartenin1935andachildcarecenterintheminesitein1937.PreviousstudiesontheHanaokaminehavefocusedononlytheHanaokaincident,whichwascausedbyChinesedrafteeson30June1945.Theyhaveoverlookedchildcareandlaborofthefemaleworkerswhoworkedthere.Moreover,thesestudieshavenotfocusedonmobilizationofmarriedwomenandtheroleoftheminminesduringthewar.TheaimofthisresearchistoanalyzewhattheroleoffemaleworkerswasandwhatthefunctionofthechildcarecenterwasintheHanaokamineinwartime.TheJapanesegovernmentrequiredchildcarecenterstobechargedwithkeepingaroleasabufferzonebetweendecreasingpopulationandlaborshortage.ThisresearchwillalsoshowtherelationshipofpowerbetweentheregionwheretheminewaslocatedandtheHanaokachildcarecenter.

Existence"Recently,therehasbeenagrowinginterestinthebalancebetweenanation'seconomicgrowthandglobalpeace.InazoNitobe(1862-1933)isaJapanesethinkerwhodeservesourattentionforbeinganadvocateofeconomicgrowthforthestrengtheningofthenationandalsoaninternationalistconcernedwithworldpeace.ThefamedauthorofBushido:ThesoulofJapan(1900),healsocontributedtointernationalpeaceasthesecretarygeneraloftheearlyLeagueofNationsinthe1920s.Infact,NitobewasaneconomistwhoclaimedtheimportanceofagricultureinModernJapan.Itwouldthusbeofinteresttolearnhowthesetwoseeminglyconflictingvalueswereabletocoexistinhisthought. TheGwangjuUprisingandTransitionalJustice:TransformationofHistoricalReconciliationamongDemocratizationMovement
Mystudyexaminestheprocesses,benefits,andlimitationsofthehistoricalreconciliationprojectsforstateviolence,particularlyfocusingontheGwangjuUprising,democratizationmovementoccurredinSouthKoreain1980,suppressedbyauthoritarianKoreangovernment. Toaccomplishthisobjective,thisstudyperformsthreetasks;itclarifies(1)howthepublicmemoryoftheUprisingwasformed,(2)theprocessesofthereconciliationprojectsafterdemocratizationin1987,and(3)thebenefitsandlimitationsoftheseprojectsbyusingthetransitionaljustice(TJ)concept. Bymeetingtheseobjectives,thisstudyclarifiesthreepoints.First,thefindingofthe“Minjung(People)”conceptwasatriggerforKoreanstothinkaboutreconciliationfortheUprisingasanimportantissueforthendemocratizationmovement.Second,thedemocratizedgovernmentapproachedreconciliationprojectsattimesbycomplyingwiththereconciliation-conditionspresentedbycitizens.Third,theseprojectsdemonstrateexemplarypracticalitiesofTJ.Whilethereareomissions,victimsandcitizensarestrugglingwiththem.Hence,theformofreconciliationcontinuestochange. ThispaperanalyzesthepresenceofPortugueseheritageintheculture,language,andreligiouspracticesoftheislandofAmboninIndonesia’sMalukuprovincewhilealsoprovidingahistoricaloverviewtothearrivalanddepartureofthePortugueseandtheaccompanyingJesuitMissionsinthispartofSoutheastAsia.Thispaperseekstounderstandhowtheinitial16thcenturyPortuguesesettlementsinAmbonandtheJesuitmissionscontinuedtohavealastingimpactonthesocial,religious,andculturallandscapeofAmbondespitetheendofPortuguesecolonialruleintheearly17thcenturyandsubsequentregionaldominancebytheNetherlandsEastIndiaCompany.Ultimately,thispapercontendsthatcurrentAmboneseChristianscaninparttraceasignificantportionoftheiroriginstotheperiodofthePortuguesepresenceinAmbonandthatthisPortugueseinfluencemanifestsitselfinnumerousculturaltraits,especiallylanguage.Inthispaper,colonialdocuments,Jesuitmissionletters,indigenousAmbonesehistories,historicallinguisticspapers,andcontemporaryanthropologicalarticlesareutilizedtoexaminetheroleofthePortugueseandJesuitmissionsinthedevelopmentofadistinctiveAmboneseChristiancommunity.ThispaperprovidesavaluableintroductiontounderstandingthedevelopmentoftheAmboneseChristiancommunityanditsrelationtonotjustthePortugueseandJesuits,buttoothercolonialpowersandmissiongroupsaswell. TerritorialBordersaredemarcatedbyeverystatetosafeguardthewell-beingoftheircitizensfromexternaluncertainties.Illicitcrossingofthosebordersbyoutsiderscreatesecuritythreatsforanumberofstates.Theillicitwaysrefertotheactsofcrossingborderswithouthavingauthenticlegaldocumentationsuchasvisasandpassports.WithinthisscenarioongoingbordercrossingofwomeninIndia,Bangladesh,Pakistan,NepalandAfghanistanhaveconstitutedsecuritychallengestotheentireSouthAsianregion.Thiscontemporarychallengecanbeidentifiedasatransnationalsecuritythreatwhichmostlydemonstratesnon-
militarystrainsthatemergeacrosstheborders.Therootcausesforillicitbordercrossingofwomenareoftenassociatedwiththepushandpullfactorsintheeconomic,socialandenvironmentalaspects.Underthepushfactorswomenmoveintoanothercountrybecauseoftheindividualriskintheirnativelands.Incontrast,pullfactorsforcewomentoenterintoanotherterritoryduetothevariousneedswhichcannotbemetbythemintheirhomecountries.Asanultimatefalloutoftheaboveconstraints,womenbecomevulnerabletotraffickingaswell. DuringtheinitialcolonialperiodofthePhilippines,Catholicmissionariesencounteredculturesthatplacedthespiritualadministrationofindigenousanimismonwomen.Thesewomenheldinfluentialpositionsintheirsocieties,yetmissionariesworkedtodebasetheirspiritualpracticesandsupplantitwithCatholicism.Becauseoftheinfluencetheseindigenousanimistwomenwielded,Catholicmissionariessoughttoconvertindigenouswomentocounteracttheseanimistleaders.Onceconverted,theclergythenusedthesewomenaspublicsymbolsoftheblessingsofCatholicismtoshowindigenousPhilippinepeoplethatwomenandmenwouldbenefitgreatlyfromadoptingCatholicism.Oneofthemethodsthesemissionariesusedwaspubliclydisplayingandrecountingthevisions,miracles,andhealingsindigenouswomenexperiencedorwitnessedthroughtheirfaithfuladherencetoCatholicprinciples.Usingtheseexperiences,theCatholicmissionariesshowedtheindigenouspopulationsthattheynolongerneededtorelyonthewomenwholedanimisttraditionsandthattheycouldinsteadfollowtheexampleoftheseChristianwomenwhowereremarkablyblessedspirituallythroughtheirdevotiontoCatholicism.Thepromotionofthesemiracles,visions,andhealingswasanattempttostrengthenthepowerandinfluenceoftheCatholicChurchinthearchipelago.Thispaperanalyzesseveralaccountsofthesevisions,miracles,andhealingswhileacknowledgingtheactiveroleindigenouswomentook.ItalsoacknowledgeshowCatholicclergyrejectedcertainaccountsofChristian-relatedvisionsandhealingsbecauseitthreatenedtheirauthorityanddidnotsupportCatholicdogma.

WeiZhang/UniversityofHawaiiatManoa FlowingfromIndiatoChina:thePerformativeFigureof“Thousand-HandAvalokitesvara”inChineseDanceandContemporaneity DuringthelonghistoricalperiodofBuddhism’slocalizationinChina,theIndian“Thousand-HandAvalokitesvara”wastransformedintoafemaleimageinChineseculture,absorbingTaoismandConfucianism,andfinallycreatingthelocalChineselegend.Venerableandpowerful,andabletohelppeopleoutoftheirdistressandmisery,theAvalokitesvarabecamethereincarnationofaChineseSaviour,respectedbyvastnumbersofthecommonpeopleincontemporaryChina.
Chinese“Thousand-HandAvalokitesvara”danceexperiencedtheevolutionfromaclassicaldanceworktoafamousdance-drama.Handgesturesofthisstyle,whichoriginatedinIndiabutdevelopedoutsidethecountry,containimplicitspiritualmeanings—butnotnarrativeones—thatadapttheBuddhistcontext.
Mypaperpresentationwillfirstfocusonthespecificdancepiecesanddancedramaof“Thousand-HandAvalokitesvara”from2000to2005todemonstratehowBuddhiststyleofhandgesturespromotetheBuddhistphilosophyflowingfromIndiatoChina.Additionally,Iwillcompareperformativepracticesof“thousand-handandthousandeye”figuresoffthestage,whichareconsideredtobetheperfectionofAvalokitesvaraintheearthlyworld.
Thisphenomenon,reflectingBuddhistthemes,isaperpetualtopicinperformativecreation,whereittakesspecialadvantageoftheuseandinnovationofmovements.Onaccountofitshighspiritualrealm,thepreachingofBuddhismwithclarityisdifficultthroughnarrativeartforms,andthusitisofadvantagetotheartisttorecasttheexplicitspiritualworldintopracticesofmovement,and,byusingBuddhist-stylegestures,promotethephilosophicalaestheticsandethicalideologyforcontemporaryChinesesociety.Q.Z.Lau/UniversityofCalifornia,SantaBarbara ExchangeasLegitimation:BuddhistObjectsasInstrumentsofPowerinRitualTradeNetworksinPost-HanEasternAsia
NetworksoftradeconveyingrituallyimportantobjectsofpowerhavebeenakeyfeatureforpolitiesontheeasternEurasiancontinent,withregionalrulersofpolitiesleveragingcontrolofthedistributionandpossessionofrituallysignificantgoods,objects,andpeopleinordertolegitimatetheirownrule.Theabilitytocontroltheimportationofmaterials,productionofsignificantritualobjects,andthepowertodistributethemtoindividualsofinteresttotherulingclanandotherpolitiesservedtoaffirmmutualrelationsandconstructionsofhegemony.WhileproblematicinitssimplisticassessmentofChina,elementsofMarcellMauss’sinfluential“TheGift”provideausefulframeworktoanalyzetheseinteractions. TheflourishingofthenewreligionofBuddhismduringtheNorthernDynastiesdidnotleadtotheabandonmentofthesedistributivepracticesbutinsteadresultedinthecreationandconveyanceofnewritualobjectsforrulerstoasserthegemonicpower.Ilookatthreetypesofnewritual“objects”:Buddhistmonkswithscholarlyabilities,imagesoftheBuddha,andreputedrelicsoftheBuddha. RenownedBuddhistscholar-monks,throughtheirreputedsupernaturalpowersandlinguisticmasteryofsacredtexts,becamethemselvesnewobjectsofexchangeintheeraandpowerfulsymbolsoflegitimation.IexaminethevalueandpowersascribedtotheeminentKushantranslatorKumārajīvaMeanwhile,Buddhaimagesandrelics,thoughdissimilarfromritualgiftspreviouslyusedintheregion,becameintegratedintooldpatternsandsymbolsofauthorityinareassuchastheNorthernDynasties,Silla,Baekje,andJapan.
