the gaffer looks forward to the season ahead
_space united have continued to play well, and are climbing up the league tables. there is no doubt that the past few seasons have been particularly turbulent, with many challenging games. funding is a huge problem to the game at present but at _space united we continue to train hard to win games and produce the best results for our supporters.
As we move into the new season i feel the team is well equipped and, with considerable pre season training, are fit to take on the challenges ahead. we have not invested in many new signings, instead choosing to stick with the experienced veterans which we have had in the squad for several seasons. we believe that this experience helps us win games against those who may be a little younger. As Club Captain, Andy roberts continues to be a stalwart
within our team, and is a tower of strength in the centre of defence, doing a lot to coach our younger players and help them bring their best to the game.
our midfield and strike force are fit and ready to get the great results our supporters expect from us. we have made some new signings in the closed season in simon Humphrey who was an apprentice with _space united but has returned to build on his experience. the _space united academy goes from strength to strength, and we have many young, talented players coming through the ranks who will allow the team to continue to be a success into the future.
during our international tour, recent wins in saudi Arabia have showed the depth and skill which our squad has, and the ability to win away from home is one we encourage
in our players. everyone at this club knows how important the future is and have been readying themselves the only way they know how – with a sense of strong-mindedness and professionalism.
what we have achieved to date has been impressive in so many ways, but it will all count for nothing if we don’t carry the same kind of determination into the new season.
no one at this great club is under any illusions – we know how tough the future will be and what kind of challenges await us, but these are the kind of challenges we are confident we can tackle and overcome. there is a real air of excitement in the spaceworks stadium at the moment, and with the continued support of our magnificent fans, hopefully we can cement our place in the top flight and give you all something to cheer about.

You may know _space for being the architect behind some of the most prominent new developments in the North East such as Trinity Gardens, Live Theatre or Baltic Place.
As well as designing buildings we have quietly been building a reputation for building and maintaining them. Who better to put a building together and to maintain it than the team who designed it ?
Our projects are varied but include:
School ExtensionsDoctors SurgeriesLocal CharitiesRegional Landlords
We work hard to add value to the process by integrating all of our skills and operate in a very open way.
We aim to take away the stress of a building project by looking after everything from start to finish. You just need to be there to pick up the keys and cut the ribbon!
If you think our approach is different and what you have been looking for please contact Simon Humphrey our Construction Leader. No project is too small.

The pink and blacks fought off a host of clubs to sign Steve Brooks this week, and he can’t wait to run out at St. James’ Park.
MR BROOKS
steve brooKs had only just returned from a weekend camping when he signed a one-year deal with _space united during the week. “i’m very excited” brooks said moments after putting pen to paper on his contract with the club. “it’s a great move for me and i’m delighted to be here”
the 40-year-old striker is one of only two players, along with ryan Giggs, to have played in every one of the 18 seasons since the Premier league’s inception in 1992, and he can’t wait to begin campaign numer 19 with the Pink and blacks!

walking into a new management post and putting a squad together is a challenging job. Just ask the new (still unconfirmed at the time of going to print) villa manager and he’ll tell you that there are any amount of obstacles to overcome, from not knowing the team’s existing players, to the need to make big wins straight away, the list is endless.
but it’s a challenge that nigel Pilkington, leader of _space united’s leeds team, has risen to admirably since his appointment during the 2007 season.
when we asked him about the goals he’s scored, nigel said: “i was brought on board to take the team to the next level, and make us a force to be reckoned with across yorkshire.
“we’ve brought in some players from other clubs, and i’ve had the pleasure of recruiting some players from our academy and watching them develop into valuable members of the first team.”
nigel has played some great games during his time with _space united. on his best win to date, he said: “one of the big things has been the

chance to design schemes under the leeds teaching Hospital framework. we’ve built up such a good relationship with them that we’ve designed the logo for their charity – having that level of involvement with your supporters is rare, and it’s not something i’ve had at previous clubs.”
but it’s not all work as far as nigel’s concerned. He’s a clear player/manager for the team, taking them on a number of away days, including dragon boat racing and golf tournaments – an appropriate hobby for a footballer!
He concludes: “the squad here at _space united are unique and it’s great to be a part of a team that uses different tactics. we’ve had a great three seasons, but there’s still a long way to go and i am looking forward to the challenge.”
with an attitude like that, nigel is a true leeds master.

BIMSTORE
www.spacegroup.co.uk19
James Austin and Adam ward, an Architect and a technician, met as bright young things at _space group, some years ago – let’s not talk about how many, we’ll only upset them. now, not only does each have a baby of their own, they’ve also given birth to something of a revolution – bimstore.
An online shop where revit users can get everything from light fittings to laptops to put in their creations, James and Adam came up with bimstore because they needed all these elements to put in their own 3d models. Caring guys that they are, they decided that other revit users might find this useful, so they turned their own collection into an online store…and it turns out, revit users do find it helpful.
so far, so much like the story of other trendy young things finding a niche, getting all accidentally entrepreneurial and setting up a business on their own, but James and Adam have had to battle hard to get the word out. this is
partly down to the fact that the architectural world has been relatively close-minded about the idea of 3d modelling – just another one of those crazy concepts dreamt up by those kids on one too many cups of coffee.
it’s also because getting people to buy into a new idea and generally raising awareness is a long, hard, time consuming slog.
And still having full time jobs at _space group, designing schools for the next generation of bright young things, takes up a bit of their time too.
James says: “Honestly, i’m not sure how we’ve managed to fit it all in, but Adam and i are really proud of bimstore. we’ve managed to make it a pretty interactive site, and we’re always looking to adapt and change it so that it’s user friendly. nothing’s set in stone
and if someone’s got a good idea, we’ll incorporate it, but it’s always going to be our baby.”
they’re also getting the word out by leading lectures at northumbria uni. slowly but surely, these bright young things are set to take over the world.

SPACEHUS
www.spacegroup.co.uk 26 www.spacegroup.co.uk25
Forget ”When Harry Met Sally”, this is the much
more exciting story of
when Keith met Sture
and _spacehus was born.
it’s not that often that you get to be in at the business end of something that’s potentially huge. it’s like signing someone from wallsend boys club who happens to be called Alan shearer and realising that actually, while he might not be very good in goal, he’s quite good at scoring them.
so, this must be the sensation that Keith Handy, Associate director at _space group, (and, incidentally, a life long black Cats fan) felt when he started talking to swedish company trisvelhus, and their Chairman, sture lamme, about their modular buildings and how the two companies could work together.
After a lot of banter, swedish meatballs and brown Ale (it’s all about cultural exchange, right?), turns out the two companies have a lot in common. both dream about sustainable communities, making life better and putting more thought into design and production, ultimately using less energy and providing an end product that does the same.
it made sense then, to team up and come up with _spacehus – the modular building concept that could potentially provide affordable housing, holiday homes, extra care and elderly accommodation and even school classrooms. built in separate timber panels in the trivselhus factory in sweden, then shipped over to the uK for assembly, it is very much the kind of product you’d expect from a country that flat pack furniture (it almost feels as though no household is complete without a billy bookcase now).
the model, based on the German PassivHaus concept, matches current sustainability and home building codes, and has the potential to be zero carbon, and all of this means that its also the kind of product that you’d expect from the team that brought you the think differently strapline.

Keith says: “As architects, we’ve always focused on getting the design perfect, and we’ve always had some great feedback from our clients about that. but we’re now at the stage where we want to make sure that our drive towards design perfection is matched by the standard of building that realises those designs.
“we spent some time looking for a company that can help us meet that demand. trisvelhus is the right partner to help us do this, and _spacehus is the natural combination of our designs and their building knowledge.
“while i visited the factory to see how the buildings are constructed, i confused sture by asking him how long the timber would last – he told me that they used the best available timber, so if it was taken care of, it would last a lifetime. that, to me, says everything about why we’re working with trisvelhus – they don’t compromise on materials, just as we won’t compromise on design.”
Perhaps its the sheer number of possibilities that the _spacehus concept provides, or maybe it’s the idea that, once it starts on site, a building can be complete in a month, but whatever it is, Keith is excited about it, and that excitement has rubbed off onto everyone else who comes into contact with the concept.
