The Academic ProcessionalThe academic processional, which precedes the graduation ceremonies on college and university campuses, is one of the oldest and most colorful customs that link 21st century education with its early origins.
To signify the achievements of their students, American institutions of higher learning conduct a formal ceremony to award the appropriate degrees earned at the conclusion of prescribed study. The action of taking the degree – associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctor’s – as well as the designation of the day itself—is Commencement.
Various explanations of the term “commencement” are possible. The most likely is that centuries ago the bachelor, originally an apprentice, began his apprenticeship upon that day; and with the degree of M.A. and Ph.D., the masters and doctors commenced their work upon the day their degrees were conferred. So today, the student, having finished his/her preliminary education, sets out on a career.
The academic regalia worn at Commencement is of medieval origin. The scholars of Bologna, Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, Louvain and Heidelberg dressed in a manner to distinguish themselves from the merchants and other townspeople. Since the 11th century, when the rise of the universities began, “learned clerks” robed themselves in gowns, caps and hoods, thus marking a difference between “town and gown.”
By this apparel, they were recognized as belonging to the teaching guild which was the Guild of the Master of Arts. In this organization, the bachelor was the apprentice of the master. This relationship was the forerunner of today’s academic structure, which often includes graduate and/or teaching assistants (usually studying for advanced degrees).
Generally in Europe, a professor wears the type of garment customary in the university where he/she is lecturing. In the United States, our tradition differs; our professors continue to wear the gown and hood of the university where they received their highest degree.
The gown, in origin, may have been simply a type of overcoat to protect the teacher from the cold in the unheated buildings; the cut or style seems to be derived from ecclesiastical attire. It has usually been black. The gowns of bachelor’s and master’s are usually without trimmings of any sort, whereas those of doctors are faced down the front with velvet and adorned with three velvet bars on the sleeves.
The cap or “mortarboard” may have come from the squarish cap worn by the masons of the Middle Ages, or perhaps was suggested by the shape of the books which occupied so much of the time of scholars. Attached to a button on the “mortarboard” is a tassel; bachelor’s and master’s are black or the color appropriate to the subject; those of doctors black or golden. The tassel is worn on the left side by those who are receiving or have received a degree.
The hood, a triangular fold of cloth worn over the back of the gown, is faced with colors which denote the field of study represented by the wearer’s degree; the colors of the lining are those of the college or university from which the degree was granted. The length of the hood is correspondingly longer with each degree.
The wide velvet borders extending down the front of the doctoral gown, the velvet bar on the sleeves and the borders of most hoods are colored according to scholarly field of the wearer.

The Ceremonial MaceThe Ceremonial Mace is traditionally carried by a university marshal at all formal academic occasions. The staff, which stands 36 inches high from top to bottom, is made of walnut with a mahogany finish. It is trimmed in 14k plated gold. At the top of the Mace is the great seal of South Dakota State University. The engraved inscription reads “South Dakota State University founded 1881.” The Mace was presented to the University as a gift from the SDSU Alumni Association and was used for the first time at President Peggy Gordon Miller’s inauguration, Sept. 19, 1998.
The Ceremonial Mace has an ancient history as a symbol of authority. In medieval times it was a studded, clublike weapon, made of iron and capable of breaking armor. It became associated with the protection of the king in France and England and was carried by the king’s sergeant-at-arms. In the 13th century, it was used for civil purposes and figured in the processions of city mayors and other dignitaries. Eventually, the Mace became a symbol also for academic institutions, an emblem of order and authority in the pageantry of ceremonial occasions.
The University Presidential Medallion
The University Presidential Medallion, a traditional symbol of authority of the Office of the President, is a 14k gold replica of the University Seal, is 3 inches in diameter and is cast as a single piece.
The reverse side of the Medallion is engraved with the names the University has formally held since its inception: Dakota Agricultural College, 1884-1889; South Dakota Agricultural College, 1890-1907; South Dakota State College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts, 1907-June 30, 1964; and South Dakota State University, July 1, 1964-Present.
The University Presidential Medallion was designed by Sioux Falls artist Jurek Jakowicz and was presented as a gift to the University by the SDSU Foundation. The Medallion is part of the University’s heritage and will pass to future presidents. It is traditionally worn by the University president at important ceremonial occasions.
At South Dakota State University the tassel color signifies the college in which the degree is earned.

WAPA’HA OR EAGLE STAFF
The staff represents honor and tradition and symbolizes the spirit of leadership, achievement, bravery and sacredness. Representations of the staff can be seen at the beginning of an event or ceremony. As the staff is carried in front of the procession, it is a reflection of the core philosophy that embodies the founding principles of respect.
INTERNATIONAL SASHES
International graduates participating in today’s commencement ceremonies are wearing sashes that allow them to proudly represent their countries. The colors within each sash represent the colors of their nation’s flag.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
South Dakota State University is located on the ancestral territory of the Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires), an alliance that consisted of the Santee, Yankton and Teton Lakota. They are commonly known as the Sioux by non-native people. The seven tribes now occupy nine different reservations in South Dakota. The nine reservations are: Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, Oglala Sioux Tribe, Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Yankton Sioux Tribe.
As part of our university’s effort to enact inclusive practices, this acknowledgment serves as a reminder that before this site was called SDSU, it was called home to Native Nations indigenous to this location.

Leon WrageCITATION FOR THE HONORARY DEGREEDOCTOR OF PUBLIC SERVICE
Leon Wrage had a profound impact on South Dakota agriculture, South Dakota State University and on the discipline of weed science during his 47 years as an agricultural leader, innovator and mentor. This impact was not only due to his intellectual capability but also because of his immense enthusiasm to support South Dakota farm families and improve their livelihood and economic stability. No SDSU Extension specialist in the last 50 years had the overall impact on
South Dakota agriculture as Wrage.
He connected with SDSU as a youth when he joined 4-H in McCook County. His 4-H training laid the foundation for his future profession as an Extension specialist and teacher. He made a lasting impression on weed identification with farmers at the South Dakota State Fair, and many will remember him from his contributions on public broadcasting’s “Garden Line.”
Wrage provided substantial leadership to South Dakota State University and to the entire agricultural community. During his tenure at SDSU, agriculture underwent a significant transformation in terms of the amount of regulation and training required for the use of herbicide products. Wrage took a leadership role in working with the S.D. Department of Agriculture and the S.D. Agri-Business Association in innovating training and certification programs that provided comprehensive training without being onerous.
Wrage earned the rank of Distinguished Professor in 1994 and was inducted in the S.D. Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2015.

Mary Kay Helling, Ph.D. GUEST SPEAKER
Mary Kay Helling has served in the Office of Academic Affairs since 2003 serving most recently as vice provost. She has provided leadership for projects focused on student success, institutional accreditation, program review, curriculum development, academic agreements with in-state and out-of-state partner institutions, general education, faculty development, assessment of student learning, academic policy and procedures as well as numerous special projects. During this time, she has also served as interim dean of the Graduate
School, inaugural director of the now Ness School of Management and Economics and interim dean of University College. She was the head of the former Department of Human Development, Consumer and Family Sciences from 1992 to 2003. She completed her Ph.D. at Purdue University and was supported in part through a 1989 Bush Leadership Fellowship.
As department head and professor, she helped establish the current College of Education and Human Sciences, facilitated ongoing accreditation of programs and conducted research in identity development of American Indian students and the intergenerational transfer of the family farm or ranch. Helling was also very active at the state level, conducting evaluation research with a variety of state agencies. She taught extensively in the areas of human development theory, early childhood education best practices and research methods as well as strategies for working with parents and families. Helling also served as an academic advisor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Another highlight of Helling’s career is her ongoing partnerships with Oglala Lakota College, Sinte Gleska University and Sisseton Wahpeton College on assessing student learning, program review and accreditation-related activities.
Selene Renes STUDENT SPEAKER
Selene Renes is from Harrisburg, South Dakota, and will be graduating with a B.S. in civil engineering with Honors Distinction.
She chose SDSU for the community it offered and the many opportunities available. During her time at State, Renes has held many roles in the Alpha Omega Epsilon sorority, was an SDSU Admissions Ambassador, an officer in the American Society of Civil Engineers, sang for four years in Choralia, was a co-chair for Engineering Expo, and was in Mortar Board.
Some of her favorite SDSU memories are: studying abroad in Indonesia with the Van D. and Barbara. B. Fishback Honors College; showing an animal for the first time in the 96th Little International; placing second in her first concrete canoe race; and helping with commencement as an Admissions Ambassador.
She looks forward to starting as an assistant structural engineer at Burns and McDonnell in Kansas City after graduation.
This past August, she married Logan Renes, and is incredibly grateful for his support in everything she does.

Michael Adelaine, Ph.D.HONORARY MARSHAL
B.S., MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY M.S., UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA- LINCOLN Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA- LINCOLN
Michael Adelaine started at SDSU in 1990 as an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering and SDSU Extension computer specialist. He then became the first director of the agricultural information technology unit for the then-College of
Agriculture and Biological Sciences and was promoted to full professor. Adelaine was named the university’s first full-time chief information technology officer in 2003 and then was promoted to vice president for technology and safety in 2013.
In 2019, the Federal Communications Commission chose Adelaine as one of four individuals to chair working groups to look at the technology needs of precision agriculture. He also played a key role in the creation of a central security operations center at South Dakota State for the South Dakota Board of Regents and the Regents Information Systems. He also oversaw recent additions of a high-performance computing cluster and a 100-gigabyte internet connection on campus. In addition, Adelaine oversaw the arrangement that allowed SDSU to be the first university in the United States to use Hotmail as a pilot program for students. He also built the first extension educational videoconference network and served as principal investigator for more than $4 million in grants.
The Harbor Springs, Michigan, native received his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State and earned his master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Mary Kay Helling, Ph.D. HONORARY MARSHAL AND GUEST SPEAKER

Allyson Monson STUDENT SPEAKER
Allyson Monson is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in political science and communication studies with a legal studies minor. She is from Clark, South Dakota, and the daughter of Jerry and Brenda Monson.
At SDSU, Monson has been involved with Students’ Association, the Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College, Admissions Ambassador program, New Student Orientation and presented research work at national conferences.
The SDSU Students’ Association sparked Monson’s desire to create change. She served as a senator for two terms before being elected as the 2018-19 Students’ Association president. Monson became SDSU’s first two-term female president when she was reelected for the 2019-20 term. As president, Monson oversaw allocation of student funds that enhanced the Wellness Center by hiring a new mental health counselor. Other projects included creating a fund for a campus transportation system. She also testified for affordability of higher education to the South Dakota Legislature and Board of Regents.
She interned in the U.S. Senate this past summer and was responsible for authoring policy briefings. As a 2019 Henry Clay Statesman Scholar, Monson developed a bipartisan, affordable housing policy recommendation that was presented to the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C.
Monson’s favorite SDSU memories include celebrating the 2017 Dakota Marker victory, studying abroad in Indonesia, impersonating Bob Ross during Hobo Week festivities and ringing her cowbells through the last Hobo Day parade. Monson will begin law school in the fall. She hopes to serve the Midwest as a practicing attorney.

ProcessionalWAPA’HA OR EAGLE STAFF

During this time, she has also served as interim dean of the Graduate School, inaugural director of the now Ness School of Management and Economics and interim dean of University College.
Amber AlveyStudent Speaker
A master’s student from Scotland, South Dakota, Amber Alvey is graduating with a Master of Arts in communication and media studies. Alvey, the daughter of Damon and Linda Alvey, graduated from SDSU in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and marketing.
For the past two years, Alvey has been a graduate teaching assistant, serving as an instructor of record for the School of Communication and Journalism. She has taught Speech 101 for three semesters and Public Speaking 215 one semester.
Alvey’s passion for service has allowed her to serve as a senator for the Students’ Association the past three years and on the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities for the past year.
That passion found another avenue in graduate school—teaching. Alvey received the Central States Communication Association’s Pamela J. Cooper Award for teaching excellence. She also earned SDSU’s Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning’s Certificate of Excellence in Teaching and a Certificate of College Teaching Development. Alvey has also completed the SDSU Graduate School Professional Development Program and is a CSCA member.
Alvey’s graduate research has focused on disability studies, specifically in families with members who are deaf or hard of hearing. Finding a passion for advocacy, building relationships and teaching, Alvey hopes to continue her service for students in her future career path.
