Attendance Policy

For high school students, the following absence limits are permitted without affecting credit for a course:

• Full Year – no more than eight (8) absences per semester. (16 total)

• ¾ year – no more than twelve (12) absences

• ½ year (semester course) no more than eight (8) absences

• ¼ year (Health/Drivers Education) no more than four (4) absences

Naviance College Resources

Naviance is the web based tool that will be used exclusively for college planning and applying process. This will be essential during Junior and Senior year, but students can begin the college research now. Some useful tool are the “Find your Fit” and “Advanced College Search” that will generate a list of schools that are a good fit based on academic and personal factors.

• The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-aptitude test that measures developed abilities to help predict future academic and occupational success in the military• Does not require that a test-taker with a qualifying score enlist

The PSAT/NMSQT• Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test

(PSAT/NMSQT) is a program co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC)

• District is paying for ALL 10th graders to take PSAT.

• Free of charge and no registration required.

• Being administered Wednesday, October 16th at 7:40am at PHHS

Common Reasons for Taking the PSAT/NMSQT

• Prepare for the SAT

• Enter scholarship and recognition competitions

• Improve academic skills

• Identify AP potential

• Plan for college and careers

• Connect with colleges

What is the SAT?• Curriculum based, similar to the ACT.

• The SAT includes four sections:1. Reading Test (65 minutes total)2. Writing and Language Test (35 minutes total)3. Math Test (80 minutes total)4. Essay (50 minutes total)-optional

• Total testing time is 3 hours (plus 50 minutes for the optional Essay.)

(You cannot take the SAT Reasoning and subject tests on the same day.)

The ACT

• The ACT is a standardized college-readiness and high school achievement assessment

• The ACT contains five sections: 1. 45-minute English section

2. 60-minute Mathematics section

3. 35-minute Reading section

4. 35-minute Science Reasoning section

5. 30-minute Writing section (optional)

SSD-Testing Accommodations• Students with IEPs and 504 plans can apply for

testing accommodations

• Not all requests are approved

• Process for the SATs and ACTs are completely different

Class of 2022 - Graduation requirement

● 1. Demonstrate proficiency on NJSLA/PARCC ELA 10 and/or Algebra I; or

● 2. Demonstrate proficiency in ELA and/or mathematics by meeting the designated score on one of the alternative assessments such as the SAT, ACT, ACCUPLACER, and ASVAB.

● 3. Demonstrate proficiency in ELA and/or mathematics by submitting, through the district, a student portfolio appeal to the NJDOE.

NJSLA

Advanced Placement (AP) Program

• AP courses are designed to give students access to rigorous college-level courses in high school to cultivate skills for an easier transition to college

• 85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP experience favorably impacts admissions decisions

• Course entails an AP exam (optional) around May to test the student’s knowledge• Certain scores (usually a 3 or above) in certain colleges and

universities may apply as college credit

Share Time are half day programs for specialized occupational training as part of a student’s junior and/or senior year high school program.
